Top Ten Most Twisted Films Ever

Hey. So, I adore films that just make me squirm or really leave me with a sense of disturbance. You know, those awesome flicks that just mess you up in the head. I'm trying not to double up, although several directors on this list have more than one messed up film. What's your top ten? If you have more than 10 favorites, put those down too, I definitely have more than ten. I felt compelled to make out a list. In no particular order:
The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover
Taxi Driver
Happiness
The Brood
A Clockwork Orange
Nil By Mouth
Salo
Eraserhead
Ichi the Killer
Night of the Living Dead(Original 1968 version! try and tell me that scene where the little girl kills her mother with the garden spade isn't freaky!)
Pink Flamingoes
The Piano Teacher
Blue Velvet
Henry: Portrait of A Serial Killer
Julien Donkey Boy
Battle Royale
The Wicker Man
Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS
The War Zone
Begotten
American History X
Kids
Irreversible
Night and Fog
Sick

I could go on, but let me know. And by the way, I know NOLD is an old Romero flick, but try and tell me that scene where the little girl kills her mother with the garden spade isn't freaky! Good luck.
Hope to hear from you soon and hear about all these crazy sicko movies I've been missing!

A similar post by the same OP, nickkarner, on the Happiness board really took off, and a massive list of disturbing movies has been compiled there.

Here's a link to that thread: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0147612/board/nest/17087587

Are you talking about films with some artistic merit or just plain twisted? I've never seen any of them, but I've heard A Serbian Film and the Human Centipede movies are the products of some really disturbed minds.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

reply

I'd add Heavenly Creatures

And that's why..... you always leave a note!

I've seen Serbian and Centipede- Serbian is by far the most disturbing I've ever seen, and I've seen Ichi the Killer, Salo and Cannibal Holocaust and didn't bat an eye. Human Centipede has no artistic merit whatsoever, while A Serbian Film is quite well done and does have significant artistic merit, and serves as a political allegory. That being said, I feel weird recommending it as it's quite a traumatic experience just viewing it.

How has no one mentioned Antichrist yet!?!? Close second to Serbian Film for most disturbing. Also well done and intriguing message

I think he means films that are shocking/disturbing to you out side of porn cause well this list would be dominated by porn if that were the case.

Antichrist, Breaking the Waves, The Idiots, Dogville, Manderlay... basically anything by Lars Von Trier

When it opened, I saw The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover with my mom in a theater in Boston that's long gone. Being 19 at the time, it had a huge affect and was part of the impetus of my long-lasting love of film.

Also add to the list, an intriguing French flick:

Martyrs http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1029234/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

I will second In a Glass Cage and The Untold Story. On the latter, make sure you get the correct version (there are evidently two or three out there).

The Eight Immortals Restaurant: The Untold Story (1993) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103743/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2

I'd like to add Audition (1999), by Takashi Miike.

Very few films catch me off guard these days, but this little piece of Southern Gothic made my jaw drop: The Baby (1973)

I have a couple to add:

I Saw The Devil - Insane revenge flick
Chained - D'Orfino at his best
Necromanitk - Just what it sounds like
Mum And Dad - You just have to watch it.....

reply

you forgot 8 mm.
And I was disturbed to learn Pretty baby (1978) had brooke shields who was 12 at the time filmed full frontal nudity.
