Out of print?

Why is this film out of print? I would think it significant enough to remain in print. I was looking to see if a BluRay of this film was available only to find that even the DVD is not anymore. In fact, the cheapest DVD copy on Amazon is $50 and it goes up from there. It makes me feel good to own a copy, I guess. I had no idea it was worth anything more than about five bucks. Still, not selling.

I recently picked up The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover over at Amazon UK for less than 5. If you have a multi-region player then you might want to pick it up.

The Anchor Bay DVD is out of print. A pity, as this is a great film.

The DVD, while boasting a fine transfer of the film, has hardly any special features though. Two trailers, and an essay printed inside the jacket of the DVD.

I know that Criterion apparently has the rights to it...

I picked this up for a dollar on VHS. I also cleaned it with a special VHS cleaning machine and it played crystal clear. Pretty good i guess considering it's hard to find on DVD and i'm too poor to buy most of them anyway.

Criterion is planning a release of this within the next year - hopefully they will pick up some other Greenaway catalog as well. it's a disgrace so few of his films are available in North America.

Really, because here we are 7 months later and Criterion has announced nothing..

found this DVD today at a second-hand store for $3 in the USA

It's been on DVD release for years and Amazon always have them in stock at cheap prices like £10 or around £4 used and new with third-party sellers.

I've had the DVD for years, but yes it is way out of print. It's pretty damn expensive.

Criterion now has it listed under "stalled ex-certainties" on their message forum, with an update of "not looking good at the moment" as far as the potential release of it is concerned. Damn it.

That is a shame. I was really hoping they would do this and Prosperos Books.

Can you post a link to the Criterion Forum? ~Thanks~

At the very bottom where it details the updates, it now says "12/26/09) - Removed - Greenaway (not coming)". Very big shame, though I'm glad I have a perfect duplicate of the film on DVD, still would have been nice to have it get the Crit. treatment.

I had my DVD copy imported from the U.K. The cost of the DVD and shipping to the U.S. was very reasonable! Universal Pictures released it on DVD in the U.K. Isn't it about time many of you get yourselves a region free DVD player?
