Soundtrack?

What are some of the songs used? Is there a soundtrack?

There are three songs that I remember all by DDR pop stars.

The first time Philipp goes into the gay bar you can hear parts of "Gold in Deinen Augen", and later in this scene when we see Matthias for the first time in his costume they play "Wie ein Stern" - which was also used in another touching bar scene in another DDR drama DAS LEBEN DER ANDEREN - The Lives of Others in 2006. Both of these songs are by Frank Schöbel.

During Philipp's last scene in the bar as he listens to the old man talking, the drag queen in the background wearing the school uniform performs "Kariert" by Chris Doerk.

Hope this helps.....

I had wondered about the soundtrack, too. I just saw the film at the German Film Festival in Melbourne, Australia.

I believe a song from the East-German band 'Silly' was playing in the scene where Philip is alone and pensive in his apartment. Silly was a very popular group at the time (1989) - I'm told the lead singer died before the wall came down, but I don't know if that's an urban myth or not.

Much of the sound-track (disturbing string arrangements) is very reminiscent of West German films of the late 1970s (I'm thinking 'Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum'). When you think about it, it almost makes sense - 1970s western fashion finally catching up in the East in the late 1980s.

No soundtrack record was ever released, which is too bad, because it had many of the most popular tunes of the GDR on it. Here are some of them:

Silly – Schlohweißer Tag
Frank Schöbel – Wie ein Stern
Karsten Troyke – Meine Mutter ruft mich nicht
Frank Schöbel – Gold in deinen Augen
City – Unter der Haut
Babylon – Dynamit
Chris Doerk – Kariert
