I finally saw the movie again. Good review. The funniest thing is it never occured to me there were any plot holes! Maybe Red thought they'd be taken care of by not explaining why the parents were under protection in the first place.

AVManaics is WRONG...the Mob don't want the kid dead, they want him to describe what & who he saw as they want to know who killed the boss.
