Is is just me....

Or am I the only one who kind of wishes that Corrine and Alex would have gotten together? I mean, I know we had to get Phillip in there somewhere, but I dunno-any thoughts?

reply

i was disappointed when they didnt! i thought that the two of them were far better together than her and phillip and him and miranda.

The best way to die is to be stabbed with a Lord of the Rings figurine.

reply

I love this movie-but I dunno-maybe Phillip should of gotten together with Miranda-lol

reply

I don't. Alex is too young for her and she needs to get on with her life. I think it ending with Corrine getting on with her life and Alex accepting his new one is the perfect way to end the movie.

reply

Well-yeah. I mean I love the movie the way it is-I just kind of liked Alex and Corrine together-but the movie is perfect the way it is.

reply

Yeah I love this movie. Alex and Corrine had WAY more chemistry than any of the characters, I mean the piano scene, come on! You totally forget about age. But as much as I wish they had gotten together, what would the writers have doen with the other characters? This was the most 'intact' ending if not the most desired. And besides that kind of longing that never got fulfilled kind of adds a tragic twist to it. But hollywood aside, if I were Corrine I'd say screw Phillip and take my new husband back forever!

reply

yeah if i were her...
c-mon its ROBERT DOWNEY JR!!!
him in a heartbeat!

The reason why it worked for me was, I always thought of them as Corrine and Louie in those scenes. Those scenes highlighted why Louie was the right man for Corrine -- except now "Alex" isn't really Louie. He's still Alex, only with Louie's memories of Corrine.

Meanwhile, Corrine wasn't in love with Alex -- she was still in love with Louie.

If it had ended with Corrine and Alex together, it wouldn't have worked for me. Alex wasn't Louie, even if he had the memories. Corrine, meanwhile, was still holding on to somebody that was gone -- so much so, she didn't even notice all the things Phillip had done for her over the years, nor even realized how he really felt about her (which kept her from realizing how she really felt about him).

I think they wanted us to want them together, but if they had planned for Alex and Corinne to be together the whole time, there would have been no reason to have the character of Philip at all or have him confess to Louis (Christopher McDonald) on his wedding day to Corinne that he was in love with her.

alex and louis are 2 different people. corrine needed to get on with her life. alex met maranda. that is who he was destined for. pretty crazy huh.

reply

I've always felt Alex and Corrine should have been together. I really like the movie except for that little twist of her and Phillip getting together. That was a major disappointment. I mean, think about it, now he's with his DAUGHTER!!! That's gross... When I watch the movie, I just wqatch the beginning up until the dinner night when Alex punches Phillip. It gets turned off at that point.

reply

I think the ending was perfect. Downey's character is made all the better by how he gives up his past wife to his friend, who he sees was there for her, faithfully, for over twenty years. The writers wanted to show widows that it's okay to move on to a new love - that their lost ones would want it to be that way.

And about Downey being with his daughter, well, he did turn her away when he knew, and at the end he doesn't know. Just like we don't know what relations we've had with others before. You're just attracted to someone and express that affection in the way that is proper for whatever your relation in age to them is.

reply

as a child I enjoyed the ending, but now 18 years later I wish Corinne and Alex were together. I don't think age should have anything to do with it. The purpose of the movie should have been to show that soul mates exist, and that nothing can keep them apart!

reply

I completely agree! That aspect of the movie is disgusting and it kind of ruined the whole thing for me. And the fact that the mother is okay with it.... Come ON. Her dead husband's soul is going to end up being her son-in-law and banging their daughter. I just canna.

reply

I was disappointed by the ending. Besides, it was like Alex was getting it on with his daughter. Adios.

reply

well the shot that alex got at the end made louis' spirit move on, after that it was all alex.... no more louis. but i still love the movie the way it was. i believe this movie is up there with my favorites now. i stil love the chemistry between alex and corrine. the whole scene before phillip intrupted them was gorgeous... b4 it was cut short...

reply

What? Perhaps you misunderstood the movie navygurl, The only reason Alex remembered Louis' past memories was bec he was Louis in a former life. What changes here isn't the soul but the body, the soul is reincarnated/recycled into a new body, that was the point of the movie. So, Louis' soul didn't move on at the end of the movie, the soul is still there, he just has amnesia bec of the injection (the injection makes you forget, not lose your soul, that would've killed him), if the soul moved on then there wouldn't be an Alex, he would've died bec he didn't have a soul anymore. Alex is Louis reincarnated, maybe different physically & perhaps personally as well, I mean his character probably changed a bit since it was molded by new experiences & not by his past life but the soul is one & the same!

I hope this helps!

Kahn, I'm laughing at the superior intellect.

I don't think they should have gone with the Alex/Miranda romance to begin with! It's rather narrowminded to think that a young man and a young woman would necessarily need to enter a sexual relationship if they like each other. The writers could have had them kick it off as an inexplicable platonic friendship even before Alex started realising he used to be Louie. Even after Alex forgot his past life, I think he should have still felt a platonic and if not fatherly, then brotherly love for his daughter by soul instead of wanting to mate with her.

I'm here, Mr. Man, I can not tell no lie and I'll be right here 'till the day I die

reply

I agree. It's sick. I wonder if Woody Allen had anything to do with this movie.... no wait, he couldn't have been involved because I didn't sleep through the movie or want to give myself a lobotomy. I DID, however, want to wash my brain of the daddy/daughter relationship and daddy/daughter/mommy love triangle. Ugh.

reply

Very good point. This is what happens when atheists talk about souls not understanding its concept, having not a clue about what the subject really means.

reply

How wrong you are, dearie. It's still Louie's soul, he just doesn't remember his former life, as it should have been from the beginning but the Reincarnation Angel Dude forgot to give him his shot. It would be NICE if your version of events was accurate, but no, Louie hooks up with his own daughter as Alex. And the mother and Louie's bestie are juuuust completely unperturbed by this fact.

reply

I know, right? Gross.

reply

I agree with you, Nena. The movie made me quite sad.

I think it really sucks how we let our souls be prisoners of our bodies and our age. Or is it supposed to be that way? Probably...

But what if it had been Corinne who died? Then SHE would have been the young one, and the affair (with her husband..) would have been more "normal" in the eyes of the society. I bet they would have stayed together. Also, they would have been able to have more children - the way Alex wished.

Or... maybe it's like Corinne said: people change.

LOL! Sorry, nothing to do w/ the topic at hand, I thought netta was responding to my post & I was wondering,'how did you know my name?' I see now that there was another poster w/ that name.

Well... twenty or, maybe better, fourty years ago - yes. But since then society has gone through enormous changes and now it would hardly be acceptable in lights of political correctness. Modern society would call him a dirty old man having Corrine as his prey. Today males are, unlike criminals, condemned from the beginning and they have to prove to be innocent. On the other hand, females are allowed to do such things because they have to prove that they have been liberated, to show that they have the same right to do what males have been doing throughout the history of mankind (but not permitting them to do it any more).

And don't think that I'm accusing or criticizing not knowing what I'm talking about. I am old enough to be a witness of the world before P.C. and I can compare. And I don't like these double standards and hypocrisy no matter which side (gender) gets favorized. So, please, I don't want you to feel offended by my reply as females. We (modern society) simply make too many standards and limits trying to uniform everything and everybody more than any period in recent (several centuries old) history.

The first time I saw this film, I was very upset that Corinne and Alex didn't get together, but upon multiple viewings, I realized she really did belong with Phillip. Corinne and Alex were trying to recapture what Corinne had with her husband and Alex wasn't really her husband anymore and it was never really going to work, not to mention the permanent rift it would have caused between Corinne and Miranda, who was nuts for Alex and would have never forgiven her mother for taking Alex away from her.

i posted this, what, a year or so ago, and came back to this board and was surprised to see how long the tread had gotten. all i can say is, while i still hoped for alex and corrine to get together, in the end, after thinking about it the other day, the ending was right and fitting.
i love this movie, why is not on tv more and why don't i own it??
