Judge Fenwick - Anthony Bonino subplot SPOILERS

is it just me or did the whole Judge Fenwick subplot seem unnecessary? It's almost as if the script at one point had Louis getting murdered by Anthony Bonino after witnessing him paying off Judge Fenwick and they changed it to Louis just getting killed by being hit by a random car instead to either tone the film down to ensure a PG rating and/or to cut down on time. But why leave it in at all? It was nice how Miranda ended up becoming a lawyer to follow her father's footsteps and Alex subconsciously wanted to go into the profession of his best friend from his previous life (a newspaperman) but they could have easily established this without the Judge Fenwick scenes. And I guess they needed a vehicle to get Alex bumped on the head so he could go to the hospital and get the forget everything shot... something the 'angels' could have easily done in his sleep at any time during the 23 years or Alex's life (especially when he was in the hospital as a baby)... as it turns out it was just another piece of evidence to re-affirm to Philip that Alex really was in fact Louis reincarnated. But if that is true, maybe Philip's motives for telling Louis about the meet were more sinister than we originally thought. Just where did Philip get the info about the secret meeting on the beach at Roosevelt Island at 6:30 in the first place? Yes, a good reporter never reveals his sources but knowing what we know now - that Philip has always loved Corrine and that he would stop at nothing to steal her away from his best friend - maybe Philip set up Louis to witness the pay off hoping that Louis would get bumped off by Bonino and leaving Corinne all to himself and the car accident made that unnecessary. Philip then conveniently forgets all about the important meeting on Roosevelt Island for 23 years (maybe Bonino or Fenwick paid him off). And what ever became of Anthony Bonino? Is he still out there somewhere paying off judges to keep his crime empire alive?

If that were the case why did it take him 23 years to act on his feelings for Corinne?
