While I don't share your particular distaste for O'Neal, IMO Philip's confession to Louie on Louie & Corinne's wedding day was a totally unnecessary plot device.
The revelation of Philip's "confession" was used as a ploy in order to:
1. Confirm to Philip that Louie was, indeed, reincarnated within Alex's body. Instead, there could have been any number of shared intimate secrets that would achieve the same purpose. It didn't have to be this.
2. Advance the "latent romance" between Corrine & Philip, by having Corinne present when Philip's confession is revealed. It was obvious to the viewer that the trajectory of the relationship between Corinne & Philips was headed in that direction anyway. Philip could have revealed the lifetime crush on Corinne for the first time during the "set up" bedroom scene---it didn't need to involve Louie
The unnecessary obstacle created by this "secret" is that Louie must have been one hell of an "open-minded" guy in order to continue to hang out with a friend who he knows would love to hook-up with his wife, given an opportunity---particularly since the three of them appeared to be inseparable in their youth.
It's not impossible for three people to have this kind of relationship. The bond of trust is so secure in some marriages, that it can circumvent any "threat" to its monogamy. However, it's probably the exception rather than the rule.
