not as good as Platoon

but decent enough. 7/10 is about right.

Platoon is made up of a lot of incidents from many different accounts, all rolled into one movie.

Casualties of War is more focused on one incident. But I did feel that Michael J. Fox, while his performance was great, I just couldn't get Marty McFly and Doc out of my head, especially when he yells and he has that distinctive sound.

I think that a lot of people had that same reaction (I know that I did) upon their first viewing of this movie. Fox's acting was very good, but after Teen Wolf and Back to the Future I don't think many people were ready to see Fox in a serious role yet. As for Platoon being the better film, I would have agreed with the OP when I first saw these movies, but since I haven't seen either in around twenty years I can't really comment as to which movie was better.

Hownos,

Why are you even comparing them? Because they are both set in Vietnam?

How intelligent.

Comparing CoW to A Few Good Men would be more relevant. But the latter doesn’t have the word “Vietnam” anywhere in the description and so your poor brain couldn’t make the comparison.

yup

I guess Platoon is marginally the better movie but I’d have to see them back to back to make a final call. Casualties of War left a strong impression on me when I saw it many years ago. It’s easily Michael J. Fox’s best performance and Sean Penn is excellent, too.

reply

Just recently re watched both of them and thought both were pretty great.

Objectively speaking, which film is better? Not sure.

But I'll watch Causalities again and again over the years. Platoon, think I've seen it twice.

There are a lot of war films I like more than Platoon for whatever reason, including:

Casualties of War
Full Metal Jacket
Saving Private Ryan
Apocalypse Now

All films I have in my library and will watch at least once a year. Somehow Platoon never resonated with me. Not to say it's a bad film though.

reply

Those four films never resonated with me except, to an extent, Saving Private Ryan. I have always felt Platoon is the best movie about the Vietnam War. I haven't seen that many. We Were Soldiers is up there, too.

reply

Platoon is more combat based whereas CoW is about the gang rape. Due to that I wouldn't say CoW makes for an entertaining film experience.
