I love war movies...Platoon is my favorite Vietnam movie abd will always be. Now watching this movie i could not take much of it cuz of the actors who were chosen. Drove me nuts!

What was wrong with the actors?

reply

They didn't seem authentic to me, i felt no reason to care for them. Both good actors but completely out of place. IMO

Umm...what screams "Vietnam" more than 80's Michael J. Fox?

reply

I guess the OP is more used to seeing Michael J. Fox on Back to the future lol geez man just watch it

reply

I can't watch this movie, because it's so ugly. I thought it was a good enough movie, but the behavior of the characters is just something I don't care to see.

It kind of reminds me of American History X in that sense. Good film, but I don't care if I ever see it again.

reply

I'm almost finished watching it now and it's horrible. The acting is terrible and the dialogue is beyond awful. This movie is nearly unwatchable in every way. Even the music doesn't fit; it sounds like it should be in Star Wars.

3/10

two things i took away from this movie not that anyone cares lol

1- it wasnt a bad movie but I also agree it is one of those you watch it once movies..not necessarily bad but not one of those movies you just got to see again and again ...It did get a little sappy at times ...and some of the stuff with the girl was hard to watch ...but it is a movie about vietnam it isnt going to be pretty.

2- I think it all depends depends on how you can view the actors ..by that i mean can you just take this movie for what it is and base it on their performance in this movie alone? ..or is how you view the movie based on their other work ...like if you saw a family ties marathon ..or teen wolf ..or ballad of ricky bobby you might not be able to take their roles as seriously in this (even though reily is pretty much the same idiot in this )

and a bonus

3- If Doc was the sarge and in command none of that travesty with the girl would of taken place!...perhaps he still has a chance to go back in time and fix it?

Frankly I think it's a terrific film, and very well acted, even Fox stands up to Penn for the most part which is not an easy thing to do. Does it have some 1980ish dialogue in there? Yes at times, and definitely not John C. Reilly's finest performance, but it was his first film, but Leguizamo was terrific. The only part I didn't care for was the very end, the moralistic wake up, the bad dream is over, the war is over you can get back to your life now message to Vietnam vets.

reply

yea it was pretty unrealistic to think that after all the vietnam vets have been through they would just "get over it" they will have those images for the rest of their lives.

reply

That was the problem. BY how they were talking, they soundsed like kids from the 80s and not the 60s.

reply

You missed the point of the ending completely. Fox wasn't getting over it. He was, in fact, haunted by the memory of that girl and he always will be. I find the ending rather tragic, because even though Fox made it out of Vietnam alive, he will never be able to move on with his life.

music sounds like it should be in star wars?? i love it when people make the most stupidest remarks that come to their heads. sounds like nothing in star wars, obviously you never watched them.

the score is amazing

Geez, you're generous. To say the acting is " terrible " is being a little generous, too. It doesn't even qualify as ' atrocious '. My max would've been a 2 out of 10. Anyone truly interested in seeing a good war film should check out Kubrick's ' Paths of Glory ' or Milestone's ' All Quiet on the Western Front '.

I think platoon is highly overrated. I prefer Casualties of War instead. The film is "ugly" due to the theme of the picture...but it is well acted, well filmed, and very powerful. It's tough to watch but it has stronger impact on ya then most war films.

I could barely watch this for free on Netflix either, mainly because the quality and resolution are so piss-poor it's like watching a YouTube clip. Silverlight sucks hard.

reply

What do you happens when a resolution is called for when a gang of military men commits a terrible crime in the military? Exactly what happens here. People expect the unrealistic resolutions because that is usually the garbage we fed in movies like Platoon. So when it is depicted correctly people are not use to it and they reject the movie.

This is to the viewers who did not like the characters. Well you are not suppose to like them they are a hateful little bunch. And yes they are for the most part kids or very young adults. I think this was one of the best movies made about war. There was no rah rah kick your butt ending. But a gratifying one because Michael J Fox did the right thing and the murderers went to prison like they were suppose to.

And this is to the person who felt he should of just gotten over it. Obviously you have no idea or know of no one who has been in a real war. Do you these realize most of the soldiers were practically kids right out of High school or still in high school. Not hardened adults. Vietnam Vets got no help when they came back from Vietnam. And the country was against them. It was a very unpopular war. You think the vets today have a hard time well it was nothing like it was in the Vietnam era. My boyfriend did 2 tours in Vietnam starting when he was 18. he is ok but he still gets flashbacks, Ask somebody how many kids are missing out of yearbook in the 60's and early 70's. Or how many people in those yearbooks seems to have happy futures but went to Vietnam and came back a mess, never to be a viable person to society. Or they did not come back at all because they were killed. So no you just don't get over it. Most likely you haven't gotten over not getting something from XMas one year. Or some teenage relationship gone wrong. And you are expecting a vet to get get over the terrible ordeal of combat and being a witness to a murder and rape. Yeah right.

reply

Uhhh... I was talking about the IMAGE resolution of the film. Meaning image quality.
