Penn's performance

Did it seem a bit overcooked at times? Like he was going overboard to show he's the mean bad guy. I thought Fox's performance was great.

"In a row?"

reply

I think it was overboard.

You got your mind right, Luke?

reply

One of the hammiest performances I have ever seen. It's like Penn watched Dead End Kid movies all night before filming started and overdid the accent to the point where it was just absurd. How could nobody on the set tell him to hold back a bit? Just awful.

I posted it on here already that I think DePalma should've cast Matt Dillon in the role of Sgt. Merserve instead of Penn. I think he would've given a more believable and less over-the-top performance as compared to Penn in the film.

reply

Yeah I think you might have a point there, the movie also suffers from just being way to depressing, it's hard too keep watching that poor girl endure such torture.

reply

Well there's no question that DePalma intended this to be a fiercely anti-war film(and statement) that would greatly affect viewers in the most visceral way possible, and he more than succeeded in doing just that IMO. But yes your absolutely right about how utterly depressing and heart-wrenching it is to witness the terrifyingly senseless and tragic ordeal that the young woman is forced to go through in the film, and for it being a terribly difficult experience for the viewer to have to see and bear. I would very much think that this is the sort of film that you're either never gonna want to see again after your first viewing of it or, after seeing it once, you're certainly not going to want to revisit again for quite some time. I just simply can't imagine wanting to view this particular film on a regular basis. No way.

But I still say that Matt Dillion was tailor made for the role of Sgt. Merserve and that he would've been much more effective than Penn was in the part, especially with Penn's over-the-top performance(and speech pattern) throughout the film. I just really think that not casting someone such as Dillon for the Sgt. Merserve role was something of a missed opportunity for DePalma's film IMO.

Dillon was is and always has been an average no-mark actor. He’s terrible.

Put your fanboy feelings aside.

A "bit" overblown? One of his worst performances.

reply

His performance was entirely over the top....including his choice to make his character talk like a mentally retarded Rock Balboa!!
This is what you get when you make movies with actors that never served in the military..... let alone experienced war.
That's why war films made in the 60's were so much better, because all the actors were WW2 and Korean War veterans, and they relied on their memories and experiences making their performances real and genuine.
Watch Lee Marvin command men in The Dirty Dozen, then watch Sean Penn in COW and theres no comparison.
You can tell that Marvin is the real deal , while Penn is a method acting, over the top douchebag!

reply

He's not a douchebag. Keep your politica out of it. He's actually a great actor. He just happened to suck in this one. As far as your theory, maybe there's something to it. John Wayne never served a day, and his war films are pretty mediocre.

reply

" He's actually a great actor "

Compared to who, someone in a high school play???

reply

You clearly don't know much about acting, do you?

reply

Thanks for letting me know.

reply

No problem. Thanks for having the guts to admit it

Right -- like making movies with actors who have never been cops; or boxers; or ex cons; or teachers; or drug addicts; etc, etc. That's why it's called acting.

And someone with the name pacinofan is calling another actor over the top and method? Good one...

reply

He was horrible in this.

I usually like his acting, but his overacting was just distracting and annoying.

reply

He appeared as if he was seriously attempting to out-DeNiro DeNiro very often throughout the film.

reply

He was terrible here, so over the top. His accent was not believable even.

I don't know why Penn is always so well-spoken of. He's highly overrated.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

reply

Thank gosh I saw this post.....I was gonna post something similar. Although I wouldn't have even questioned it like you did OP....it's one of the most over acted, horrendous, awful performances I've ever witnessed in a film. I didn't think he had a performance in him worse than his work in I Am Sam.....I was wrong. This takes the cake
