Originally written to be a RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD sequel

I remember reading about this sequel when it came out in the late eighties and the trades reported that the script was orginally written as "Return of the Living Dead 3" and for some reason was re-written to work in the CHUD plot.

If you watch the movie it plays out like a ROTLD film (more in the silly style of Part II) more than a CHUD sequel. The military hospital opening and the zombies chanting "meat" instead of "brains."

That does make sense, but do you remember where you read it? It seems extremely plausable, especially since both movies (ROTLD 2 and CHUD 2) were Vestron productions around the same time (two years apart?) and there is the same sort of silly stuff at work there.

I still wonder how Ed Naha went from THIS to mainstream success (and a much stronger, funnier screenplay) with Honey I Shrunk the Kids...Then again, Stuart Gordon directed that one, so I guess everyone was trying something different.

reply

Word is it was supposed to be a sequel to Day of the Dead, which featured a zombie of the same name.

reply

Return of the Living Dead part 2 was never a VESTRON Film. ROTLD2 was from Lorimar, a low budget version and subsidiary of Warner Brothers. After the failure of Lorimar all VHS prints of ROTLD2 were stamped Warner Brothers as they just swallowed the catalogue.

However, I truly believe the original poster was correct. ROTLD2 did pretty well even if only making $9,000,000 but it only cost $6,000,000 to make and did well on home video. However, I would still take Chud 2 over the current ROTLD 4 & 5

The zombie in 'Day of the Dead' was named Bub not Bud (though funny thing is that he is named Bud in the remake coming out). That element was just a ripoff or (if you want to call it) an homage. During the mid-late 80's the 'Dead' rights were in limbo so this was never planned as a 'Day' sequel but was a originally scripted as a 'Return of the Living Dead' sequel.

Yeah I thought so because it has NOTHING to do with the original C.H.U.D.
I mean these were zombies and they did not come from underground sewers.
But as a sequel to ROTLD, I think they should have used this one because it's funnier.

i like how they're referred to as both CHUD's and zombies. Whatever though, i loved it anyways.

OMG!

Why was this film even made!

reply

yea i just read on wikipedia that this was originally written as a rotld film. i realize that wikipedia is not always 100% correct. but well whatever the case be i just wish they had not made this film at all or at the very least not given it the c.h.u.d. name. it wasnt a bad film and yea it reminded me of a rotld film but it just wasnt a c.h.u.d. film.

I messaged Ed Naha about this a while ago and no, CHUD 2 was NEVER supposed to be a ROTLD sequel. He did say the producer was more interested in drinking wine and having sex with hookers than making a good movie.

reply

Well, it sounds like the hookers and wine paid off, because I'll be damned if C.H.U.D. II isn't just plain cheesy fun!

reply

I don't care and don't see why anyone else should care that the film is called CHUD II. Bud the Chud is a film in it's own right and has nothing to do with C.H.U.D. anymore than Troll 2 has anything to do with Troll (not that it didn't stop them packaging them together)

While it COULD'VE been a Return of the Living Dead 3(the tone is pretty similar to the RotLD movies), I can also see how they wanted to work in the zombie aspect into the "CHUD franchise". I think they took that one scene where they saw homeless woman's brother CHUDing out(mutating to a form that's sorta gaunt, zombie-like with sharp teeth, which I would guess is a transitional period before he turns into a full CHUD) and said, "Let's make a zombie movie where people turn into THOSE things! They are still kinda like zombies, but they have sharp, pointy teeth. The slight physical difference makes ALL the difference, so you can call them something new, like CHUDS and people will think it's not just any old zombie flick! It's smart, see?". Though, linking it to the first movie was kinda it's own undoing. The first movie was, while cheesy in it's own ways(goon eating the quarter), it was made to be a generally serious horror flick. I still like this movie, though. I can't help but like it.

Holy *beep* that makes total sense now. C.H.U.D. II was a lot like the Return Of The Living Dead films. Bumbling hilarious zombie comedy. It's a shame I mean it's not like this movie was gold or anything, but it would've been a *beep* load better than what we got in the too serious for it's own good Return Of The Living Dead III.

They should've just swapped out Return Of The Living Dead III for the second C.H.U.D. movie. I mean they spend way more time down in the sewers in ROTLD III than they do in C.H.U.D. II.

reply

Oddly, it's kind of funny how things turned out because the actual ROTLD 3 is tonally more similar to C.H.U.D while the second C.H.U.D. is a goofy zombie comedy. Hell, the third "Return" even has a significant portion of its story take place in the sewer.

I can't say if this is true or not. I don't know. But "C.H.U.D. II" is more worthy of that franchise than the actual RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD 3. Though it's been a long time since I last watched that film, I remember it being straight forward horror with little to no humor, unlike the previous two.

That would explain why there weren't actually any CHUDs, only zombies that they called CHUDs.
