"stinks"? Not really, to me. Gave it a 6, though, because it's sort of interesting but doesn't come together as a strong bio like I kept waiting for it to. Hey, they tried.
I gave it a 7. I liked Paul Newman as 'Uncle' Earl Long. I really wish that the whole movie was about him during this time period. Long was a extremely colorful, fascinating, and controversial figure. As a previous reviewer said the Blaze storyline should have been put in the background and the focus on Long and his political battles. On Earl I would highly recommend the book 'The Earl of Louisiana' by A. J. Liebling. It is really fascinating reading on the last of the Populist politicians.
Huey Long ,Earl's brother, really deserves a big screen biopic. The one with John Goodman is not enough and neither have been the 'All the King's Men' adaptations. Huey is ,if anything, more colorful, fascinating, and controversial than Earl was. I highly recommend the documentary by Ken Burns on this unbelievably fascinating figure. Randy Newman also wrote a song about Huey entitled 'Kingfish' which is just a fabulous song and really evokes the politics of 'the great state of Louisiana' under Huey.
8 for me. I truly enjoyed this. Blaze Starr was big when I was in my 30's. She appeared at a strip joint in L.A. once in a while and I was sorely tempted to go see her, but I never did.
Forgetfulness isn't caused by age; it's caused by having way too many stupid things to remember
