So what's different about the Final cut of Black Rain?

I've never seen the Final cut version? Apparently it's like 160 minutes long. So to those who have seen it,what's the dif? Does the additional footage make it a better movie or worse?

reply

I wish I could see it. Was hoping they would have included it on the Blu Ray.

Whoa! This movie's story doesn't deserve 160 minutes! It's a revenge/crime thriller, with an awesome setting. It's not an epic, unless there were more car chases or shootouts in the 40 minutes. Then I'd be interested.

I bet a lot of the deleted scenes have to do with the female characters, Joyce (Kate Capshaw) and Miyuki (Miyuki Ono), the girl who was part of the Yakuza and got tailed by Nick and Masa. In the original script, she was Sugai's daughter and was having an affair with Sato - basically betraying her father.

I also felt that Nick and Kate had a more fleshed out relationship. All those references to Love/Hate...

I wasn't aware that there was a "Final cut" of Black Rain. Personally, I feel it's pretty much as good as it could be, but I guess Scott could have expanded on Conklin's dodgy past, and Vincent's attitude to it. Not to mention more scenes with the very charismatic Yusaku Matsuda, who unfortunately passed away back in the '90's. Sato was one of the better villains in Ridley Scott's canon (certainly better than the boring thug from Someone To Watch Over Me!).

when nick escapes out through the cargo hold...i'd like to see the movie end there. that is to say, he should have listened to the top japanese dude, stayed on the plane, and buried his friend back in the usa.

I must have missed the existence of a longer cut, is there a version available somewhere on Blu-Ray ?
