The film starts off with Rufus pointing out that the world he and the rest of the world live in is a utopia...

However, he must go back in time to prevent Bill and Ted from being separated. But the world is already a utopia so they must have prevented being split up already, so why does he have to go back?

reply

You make an excellent point.

reply

Because it's a film.

reply

Maybe someone else went back in time on an unrelated matter and accidently stepped on an ant or something and one of the consequences that stemmed from this event was that it somehow affected how Bill and Ted's future would unfold, so Rufus had to go back to correct the changes.

reply

That's what's so brilliant about the movie. They succeeded. We know everything worked out before they even started. Timey Wimey.

reply

Because Rufus going back in time to Bill & Ted is already part of the history of that Utopia, so he has to do it to complete the time-loop.

reply

this is rufus's job to make sure it happens. every rufus must keep doing this forever.
