Phone booth time travel = inspired by Tardis?

I was aware of older Doctor Who back when this movie was released; the old Tom Baker episodes played on a local PBS station. But I never made the connection between the police box design of the Tardis and the phone booth in Bill & Ted. Surely there must have been some inspiration there? I wonder...

It's strange how the most dated aspect of Bill & Ted now is the ubiquity of telephone booths. They were quite literally everywhere at the time this was made. Today it would be weird to see two phone booths in the middle of a San Dimas quickie mart.
