His acting was hilarious in this movie, the bits with his kid were so cheesy. I also remember a bit were he's talking to James Earl Jones, begging him to let him back onto the team. Hilarious!

he should cry cause his career blows this and final analysis are his only highlights

reply

... am I the only person who thinks he did a good job in this movie? I admit he plays a better "bad guy" (thinking of By the Sword) than a good guy since he suits a colder character than a warm father type, but I still think he acted really well in this. SEriously, the bit where he begs the coach was a nice scene. He's not a bad actor, how can you say he is? And at the end where his shoulder gets popped, yo usick *beep* might find it funny, I thought that was a very emotional scene. Overcoming something like that has to be a tough scene to act. Give the guy some credit, huh?

Kung fu movies are like porn. There's 1 on 1, then 2 on 1, then a group scene...

reply

No, sorry mate. I find the whole movie hilarious!

reply

I agree with Calon Tal. I think his acting was well done, too

Its fuqqing hilariously bad the way he sits up on his knees and says "....Thank you....)

reply

I don't think he's bad in this movie. He was kinda bad in Star 80, but supposedly he got good reviews for that back in the day.

DISPLAY thy breasts, my Julia!

reply

I don't even like straight action movies that much, but I personally thought this was a great movie, and Roberts' acting in the final scene was just fantastic.

reply

All 80s movies are over the top. Julia is terrible.i do like eric he is perfect in these roles.

reply

He's phenomenal in this movie actually. People are retarded because he plays an emotional character. The guy's an oscar nominated actor. Awesome performance. Great character.

reply

Sure he overdoes it a little bit. But ask yourself these Qs

Was your heart with him throughout the film?

Did you feel happy for him when he was selected?

The first time you watched it. Did you tense up when he had his shoulder popped back in?

Did you get goosebumps when he clobbered the Korean guy and won the point?

If you answered yes to at least 2 of these questions, then Eck gave a good portrayal of a regular bluecollar guy with a talent and love for something that takes a considerable amount of dedication. Just like an Olympic athlete does.

I've got to admit that Eric Roberts is one of the great cheeseball actors of the last twenty years. Me and my brother have pissed ourselves laughing at his acting on occasion, but you've got to hand it to the guy, he delivered the goods in this one. He played a guy you could definately root for...admit it, along with the other actors in the film, the emotional payoffs were earned. That's more than i could say for his sister in Erin Brockovich, where the happy ending had her handing out big juicy cheques to victims families.

The reason this film is still stands up today is the characters and acting, as well as some of the best Taekwon Do action ever put on film...but most of all it's got heart.

reply

granted the shoulder pop, tho a lil lethal weapon Mel Gibson, was his best acting by far ("TAPE IT UP!")
But the rest was indeed laughable
Same face balled up like a broken first and wet....he was crying like he was pregnant.
But hey maybe he saw it as his chance to prove *snicker* his abilities (not a shabby roundhouse tho)

TOMMY , TOMMY, TOMMY NOOO!....Coach he's gonna kill em!

I know, I know it's cheesy....but give the guy a break. He totlly won the audiences sympathy, along with other cast members, so much so, that the Travis, Sonny and Virgil fights are cruelly shorter than the final two....but then again, they didn't win rheir fights.

reply

Are you kidding me?!? The "TAPE IT UP" line was Van Damme-worthy lol. That was easily one of the most over-acted scenes in movie history. I still crack up during that scene. Roberts did his best work during the more quiet scenes or when he was interacting with Phillip Rhee.

reply

I barely noticed Eric's good or bad acting skills because I was cringing every time Sally Kirkland, as Wade, opened her mouth.

Her spouting of fake eastern philosophy mysticism was completely laughable, and her portrayal shallow.

reply

Sally Kirkland with that 'Whitesnake' hair and the cheesey advice. Classic. What I liked was that after every time one of the USA team members got knocked down, they'd get up and get the closeup of them saying "you're going down", "I'm gonna knock your head off", "you're dead", etc...

Oh yeah. Fat little Chris Penn. A world class moron, maybe, but a martial artist? HAHAHAHAHAHA

reply

Robert's dire acting and overacting in every scene just help make this film a classic.

The begging scene and the "coach he's goin to kill him" are my favourites. Terrible acting.

An 80s classic cause of this.

reply

You are correct. It's one of those horrible performances that becomes a classic. I need to buy this one...

reply

I think Eric Roberts is a good actor -- not great but not horrible either. I feel he did a good job in Runaway Train and It's My Party...and though I cannot lie....I did laugh at some of his acting here...but this definitely wasn't his movie...heh.

I laughed when Chris Penn kicked that dude in the face when he was bowing.

reply

TAPE IT UP, TAPEE IT UUUHHHHHHHHHPPPPPP!
This film is awful in a brilliant way.
Roberts was terrible in this film, but at the same time it makes it better.

reply

I agree w/the poster who said that Roberts did a better job in the scenes where he is more quiet. The "tape it up"scene was cheesy, but I did think he did a good job in the scenes w/ his onscreen son.
I have always liked Eric Roberts' acting. I wish he was seen more in films and television series.

Not to sound silly...but he also looked very sexy in this film; makes it all the more watchable!! :)

I personally don't get the big deal with the dislocated shoulder scene? My own shoulder has been dislocated and believe me... you'd scream to as it's pulled right out and still isn't going back in.

The begging scene, well, ok a bit over the top, lol. But on the whole, I thought he did a good job in this movie.

Plus, if you've seen Raptor with him in... you'd appreciate his effort here, lol

reply

POP THE BACK, TOMMY!!!!!!! I SAID POP THE BACK!!!!!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

reply

haha you guys crack me up, it made quite an impression on me though when i was a kid, cause I could still quote the 'This is the only thing i know, that I am good at' and 'pop it!!!'. I agree with the overacting, but I still think it is an enjoyable movie, if only for the sentiment that I had for it in my youth....

'Dae-Han....He's your's Tommy...'

God's a prankster....He likes to watch...And up there, He's laughing His sick *beep* ass off!

reply

"Oh yeah. Fat little Chris Penn. A world class moron, maybe, but a martial artist? HAHAHAHAHAHA"

"Chris Penn (RIP) looked ridiculous as a martial artist."

Uh, Chris Penn really was a black belt, people. Ignorance prevails on IMDb once again.

reply

All the acting was pretty bad in this movie. James Earl Jones yells every chance he gets. Eric Roberts cries every chance he gets. Chris Penn (RIP) looked ridiculous as a martial artist. And Phillip Rhee.....wow. But it's a great movie and I watch it every chance I get.

erics poor attempt to be a tough guy with a good heart was *beep* hilarious, it was like he was an ugly woman all the way through with his ponsy hair do lol, especially the part where he gets his shoulder popped, i know hes in pain but ya dont cry about it man, your on television to the world be a man, dont get me wrong i dont mind eric in the rest of his films iv seen but that was quite funny, any one else agree?

reply

His acting is horrible. I was alot younger when I first saw this film. I loved it then and I love it now. However, now I have a sense of the very poor acting, which I admit takes a little away, but I still think it's a great movie. Plus the sound track envokes just enough nostalgia to keep me watching this movie everytime I see it on.

By the way. He looks waaaaay too much like his sister to the point that I no longer find her atractive. When I see her I see her brother. When I see him, I see Julia.....it grosses me out man.

reply

(Alex To Coach): "What da hell is wrong wih you?"

(Alex To Tommy): "Dat's b u l l s h i t man!"

Walter: "I crashed my bike."
Alex: "Yes..you..did!"

LOL

Actually I forgot if he says "I crashed my bike" or not, and I just watched it yesterday, heh heh.

I still don't mind any of the acting in this, even though Roberts gets way too over-emotional in just about every scene.

Dextor - So we should like all actors and films that have been nominated for academy awards? That is a silly argument

His acting was kinda funny in places. "You want me to beg?!" "THIS. IS. THE ONLY THING. I KNOW. THAT IM GOOD AT!"
