Gotham looks like an Elstree soundstage/backlot

..because it was.

Growing up I would marvel when people would point out that big movies like Star Wars, Superman and Raiders were shot in the studios just outside London. The magic of the movies.

But when Batman came along I thought, "Yeah. Sure looks like a studio set." I wonder how that happened. (Maybe it was the sight of Moxie from Auf Wiedersehen Pet that took me out of the illusion)

I think that was the last of the big movies shot in England for a while too.

Probably just the way Burton filmed it, he likes making things look weird and fake. The film itself has a pretty dreary tone and look.

The axis chemicals set looks great, reused from the hive ambush scene in Aliens. As does the bat lair.

That's an interesting piece of info. Aliens is one of my favourite movies and I've never noticed.

reply

Apparently they did little to alter it as well haha. It was an abandoned power station outside of London.

Still looks good though, and much more like an actual city than the Gotham in Returns where 99% of the time you just saw the exact same area. Looked very fake and limited in scope.

reply

Agreed. The limited look of Gotham in Returns is the only minus for me about that movie. I prefer it to B89 in every other way, but Gotham looks so small and set-bound.

reply

That's actually what I like about it. It makes it feel more like a comic book.

reply

That's an interesting way of looking at it.
