Something about the last Year of The Decade...

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/efgt3n/something_about_the_last_year_of_the_decade/

1989 - Batman - The birth of the comic book movie and changed the game for marketing

1999 - Matrix - the use of bullet time, which was copied and mimicked and was a game-changer for the fusion of action and sci-fi

2009 - Avatar - Say what you want, was the highest grosser of all time, and ushered in 3D movies, which never really took off. But made a huge impact in terms of the cinematic experience

2019 - Avengers End Game - The end of one of the most popular series of films the industry has seen. For the first time, we had a series of films that were both separate and interconnected, culminating in a pretty much perfect ending. And became the highest grosser of all time.

So what will happen in 2029?

reply

Hopefully a good movie that is not a superhero blockbuster. Maybe a new genre.

I can see 2 issues with what you have mentioned:

1stly Batman (1989) wasn't the birth of the comic book movie, since there had been numerous other comic book movies out before it, I mean all 4 Superman films came out before it did.

2ndly Avengers Endgame isn't the end of the series (or even the end of phase 3).

I am also sure that if you go back to any year you would be able to find something that would make that year stand out from others in any industry based around technological advances in the field alone. Every year things adapt, develop and imitate what has come before.

My guess for 2029 would probably be that very little will have changed other than film makers using adapted techniques and more expensive advanced equipment to film and edit their movies.

reply

While you are right that there were plenty comic book movies and tv shows prior to it, Batman was different. It was dark and gritty, and didn't have the cheesiness of its predecessors. It was like they put a super hero in a more realistic world.

Also the way it was marketed and cross promoted was unlike anything before it, and has been duplicated many times since, most notably Star Wars. Batman was everywhere in the months before and after its release. Even on toys, which was strange for a PG-13 movie.

reply

The decade isn’t over until the end of this year. There was no year zero, it’s kind of like how the new millennium didn’t start until January 1 2001

reply

THATS NOT TECHNICALLY CORRECT...THERE ARE TWO SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT ON CAOUNTING TIME,DECADES ETC...WHAT YOU DESCRIBE IS THE ORDINALLY COUNTING METHOD...THE OTHER METHOD,THE CARDINALLY METHOD GROUPS YEARS BASED ON HAVING THE SAME DIGITS...SO 1980-1989 IS THE DECADE.OVER 60% OF THE POPULATION BELIEVE IN THE CARDINALLY METHOD.

reply

Then that would mean the first decade only had 9 years

reply

YOUR ARGUEMENT AGAINST SCIENCE IS....THE FIRST DECADE IN THE HISTORY OF THE HUMAN WORLD WAS COUNTED WEIRD SO LETS KEEP DOING THAT FOREVER?

reply

How was it counted weird? They just started at 1. For your argument to have any weight it means the first decade only had 9 years which contradicts the meaning of the word decade

reply

YOURE TALKING OPINION..I AM SPEAKING HARD SCIENCE.LOOK IT UP.

reply

Your “science” ends in a paradox because for it to be valid we’d have to at some point have a decade of nine years which is a contradiction

reply

NO...YEAR ZERO HAPPENED,IT WAS ACTUALLY YEAR ONE..THE COUNT IS OFF BASED ON CALLING YEAR 1 YEAR 1 BECAUSE YEAR ZERO WAS ACTUALLY ONE .MISCOUNT.THIS IS SCIENTIFIC FACT...THE 18% OR SO OF PEOPLE WHO COUNT ORDINALLY,LIKE YOURSELF COUNT THE DECADES DIFFERENTLY BUT ITS STILL COMMON KNOWLEDGE OF MISLABELED YEAR 1,WHICH WAS ACTUALLY YEAR 2 BASED ON ZERO BEING 1...ANYWAY...THIS IS SCIENCE.I ONCE AGAIN ADVISE YOU TO RESEARCH THE SUBJECT.

reply

Then in that case it’s the year 2019 genius

reply

You are correct. I guess certain people start with 0 when they count to ten (or count items or talk of decades).

reply

Right but year 0 is not part of the calendar

reply

That is correct. Sometimes it's not worth arguing with people though. Especially those who have to shout to make their point seem relevant.

reply

True

reply

THATS WRONG..READ A BOOK.THERE A TWO WAYS OF COUNTING..THELIMPY MISSING YEAR ZERO WAY IS THE MINORITY CHOICE.RESEARCH BOYS,RESEARCH.

reply

An appeal to the majority is an error in logic. There are not two ways of counting. You start with the first number, in this case the year 1. So the first decade is 1-10. The rest follows. Its basic math. If there had been a year 0, then you would be correct.

Your argument that the year 1 was really the year 0 is so nonsensical it doesn't deserve refutation.

Please stop shouting.

reply

PEOPLE WHO REFUSE TO READ AND INSTEAD ONLY ARGUE ARENT WORTH THE KNOWLEDGE THEY WOULD HAVE DISCOVERED....HAVE A GREAT DAY DUANE.

reply

Funny. So funny. I've been reading voraciously for 57 of my 62 years. I read all sorts of things: science, philosophy, engineering, religion, fiction, astronomy. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering. I would bet I have read far more than you have.

You are still shouting. Its rude.

reply

ITS NOT RUDE..ITS ME...AND IF THATS TRUE..YOURE IN THE DEMENTIA YEARS NOW POPS...WHAT TIME IS BONANZA ON?

reply

Sigh. Kids who think they are so much smarter than their elders. Suffered from that myself.

With my genetics? That is family history? Dementia is a good 30 years away, thank you.

Just because its you doesn't mean it isn't rude. (And I don't watch Bonanza. Not that I dislike older movies and shows. I do. I also like new movies and shows. It all depends on the individual piece. )

reply

I AM A 38 YEAR OLD MAN..I TYPE WITH CAPS..I HAVE FOR 20 YEARS..END OF STORY...THAT RUDE SHIT IS INVENTED GARBAGE...LIKE WHEN I TELL YOU COMMAS ARE BIG DICKS AND IM OFENDED BY THEM,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

reply

Hardly invented garbage. It is a convention that has arisen over the thirty odd years that people have been discussing thing on the internet. Used for a single word of phrase it is interpreted as emphasis. However, if the entire post is capitalized it is considered shouting.

You think it is fine to shout at others. I don't. Your insistence on shouting only eliminates whatever merit your post may have.

reply

GOOD FOR YOU SWEETIE..ONLY TOOK 2 MONTHS TO SAME THE SAME DAMN THING...

reply

Yes, I was contemplating the appropriate tone to take. I see you haven't changed yours. Pity.

reply

YOUR TONE IS JUDGEMENTAL AND NOT NEEDED...CAPS,NOT CHANGING.LESS SASS SWEETHEART.

reply

Sorry, official government sources say it's a new decade now, and it's easier to count the "tens" as the decades, rather than the "zeros".

reply

Well it isn't, this set of 10 years hasn't finished, since the calendar began it has been 2019 years 9 days 19 hours and 3 minutes.

reply

Wow if it's an official government resource, then it HAS to be true loL

reply

DC vs. Marvel. It's going to happen.

reply

1979 - Alien

That movie would go on to be quite popular throughout the following 40 years. As for 2029 I don't know. I hope something really amazing happens though, and I hope I'm alive to see it. I'd imagine the movie experience in general will be a lot different by then.

Heck, Netflix currently has a few movies that features the ability to control the outcome of what happens in the story by clicking one choice or the other with our remotes. Something like that could very well expand into something bigger by 2029.

reply

I've definitely noticed that for some reason, the back end of decades are pretty loaded with all the good movies. At least in terms of blockbusters and the like.

reply

It's an interesting idea to point out the end of a decade for good movies. But, I disagree with the notion. In the 80's, we saw an explosion of amazing practical effects. 1986 was epic for this reason. But that only came after Friday the 13th, Tron, The Last Starfighter, and Terminator. The 90's saw the rise od CGI in Forrest Gump, Jurassic Park, T2, the phantom menace, and the Matrix.
The Early 2000's led to massive increases in CGI and Franchise stories like the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and even sony's super Hero movies. It's a fun history to look into.

reply

Maybe we'll get back to having normal movies again instead of three hours of superheroes looking for gemstones

reply

There's tons of non super hero movies out there. Who cares about if they're in theaters or not anymore? Not me, I personally don't go to the movies at all anymore. Netflix and Hulu are cheaper and a lot more comfortable right here at home.
