Why Hollywood won't cast Kim Basinger anymore

https://www.looper.com/133115/why-hollywood-wont-cast-kim-basinger-anymore/

As the daughter of a jazz musician and a ballet dancer, Kim Basinger was destined for a career in the performing arts. At age 17, the Georgia native moved to New York City and started working as a model. She famously posed for Playboy in 1983, and that same year appeared opposite Sean Connery in the James Bond movie Never Say Never Again. Playing a Bond girl was only the beginning for Basinger — she became a full-fledged Hollywood sex symbol in the '80s and early '90s, pushing the boundaries of the era with movies like 9½ Weeks, an erotic drama in the same vein as Fifty Shades of Grey.

Of course, Basinger appeared in the Fifty Shades franchise many years later, portraying the woman who introduced kinky businessman Christian Grey to the world of BDSM when he was an impressionable teenager. 2017's Fifty Shades Darker remains Basinger's most recent feature film appearance. She popped up in critically acclaimed Amazon series Comrade Detective a few months later, but hasn't been seen on either the big or the small screen since. How did this Oscar-winning star manage to fall off the radar? Here's why Hollywood won't cast Kim Basinger anymore.

I think that Kim Basinger's career in a way, may have ran its course. When you're an actress whose whole career was built upon how beautiful and sexy you are instead of your actual acting range and talents, you're not expected to get much millage out of that image once you're over 40. Plus, Kim Basinger is one of those actresses who if you take away her best movie(s) (Batman and later, LA Confidential), she would admittedly have a very mediocre if not downright forgettable career.

reply

Ugh, she's the one thing I dislike about the Batman movie. I get bored when she comes on, especially with her damsel-in-distress pantomime screaming.

reply

I hope this doesn't come across as the wrong way, but Kim Basinger's acting style often gives off the inclination that she's a special needs child (like she's on the autism spectrum).

reply

Yeah, I hope she had someone in her life who was honest enough to say " You're not going to work much once you age out of the hot-babe roles, so save your money, dont spend it.".

reply

Not only that, but Kim for all intents and purposes, may have gotten blackballed (or lost much of Hollywood's confidence to be more polite sounding) due to her antics on the set of this movie called The Marrying Man (it was actually the very next movie that she did following Batman) and later backing out of a movie called Boxing Helena (the producers sued her for backing out and they later won in court) at the very last minute. Those two events simply put, painted Kim as being completely unreliable and a primadonna.

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/TroubledProduction/FilmMToZ/

There's even rumors that she was a a bit of a diva, who tried to throw her weight around while making Batman. I think that Jon Peters insinuated that Kim had a hand in crafting the final act.

reply

By all accounts her then husband Alec Baldwin was even worse, but he still has a career.

I do hope that people are honest with young gals about how unfair and unequal aging is for as actors and actresses.

reply

True..She has aged but still looks too good to get the types of roles that a Meryl Streep or others in her age rage would get. And while I do think she can be a good actress there's still a sense of the old damsel in distress aura about her. She's a specific type with a limited range.

But Looper does those evaluations all the time without regarding all the facts. Maybe she is perfectly fine just acting in supporting roles here and there. She has her share of neurosis, I've heard (panic attacks, agoraphobia) so semi retirement might suit her just fine.

And Hollywood is cruel to men as well at a certain age. Unless they can play character and supporting roles... or are one of a blessed few.

During Kim's heyday, she was arguably the most beautiful, sexiest woman in movies. She was kind of the Taylor Swift of her day, in that she was essentially America's Barbie Doll. Now, Kim is the embodiment of the reclusive cat lady trope. She rarely if ever goes out in public (she's like the female version of Bruce Wayne in Batman '89 oddly enough) or talks to anybody, and seems chronically lonely, secretive, paranoid, and bitter.

Do you think, had they been about in the 1980s, that the alt-right brigade would have held Basinger as their 'Aryan ideal' the way they did with Taylor Swift (before the latter came out as a late-convert liberal)?

Basinger has claimed to have some, unverified, Native American roots (a lot of Eurocentric/white movie stars tend to do this), but for all intends and purposes she is, and looks like, a classically blonde, blue-eyed, fair-skinned Northern European (predominantly German) white woman.

reply

I don't know for sure. I want to believe that Kim does have some sort of affinity towards black people. She did after-all for at time, date Prince. She also famously stood up for Spike Lee at the 1990 Oscars after Do the Right Thing was snubbed for Best Picture. According to the trivia section of her IMDb page, she was bullied at school over her full lips suggesting (in not too kind terms) she had lips like a black person. Also, despite being from the south, Kim claimed that she wasn't into country music, but more into soul music:
https://lebeauleblog.com/2016/02/07/kim-basinger-on-good-kissing-her-academy-awards-outburst-and-conversations-with-god/

LG: Isn’t there anything about school you remember with fondness?
KB: One of the greatest memories of my life was the way the black girls danced in the bathroom and in the halls, so alive and free-spirited. I grew up on soul music. I was a dancing little creep. A lot of people say to me, “Are you country? Do you like country?” I never grew up with country music in my life. I never heard of country music until I moved to New York. I learned about black music.

And here's Kim from a couple of years back with comedian Deon Cole:

https://www.facebook.com/deon.cole/posts/10155402642123955

Then again, Kim was married to Alec Baldwin who has shown numerous times in the past, that he has racist tendencies:

reply

But Basinger, whose ancestry is recorded as mostly German, along with a bit of Swedish, can still like black music and have a sort of affinity for black people, without being black herself.

Also, there's no suggestion whatsoever that Basinger's ancestry is black. She claims Native American ancestry, which is very different, and not associated with particularly thick lips ('high cheekbones' seems to be the trait most associated with Native Americans).

Honestly, Basinger looks like a typical German woman to me. Germans, for whatever reason, do tend to have quite full lips in my experience, and all of Basinger's other physical traits, including her long straight blonde hair, her blue eyes, and her pink glossy skin tone, seem to indicate German to me.

reply

Looking it up, the surname "Basinger" appears to be of Swiss or German (but mostly German) origin:

http://ethnicelebs.com/kim-basinger

Ethnicity: English, as well as some German, Scottish, Scots-Irish/Northern Irish, and distant French

https://prabook.com/web/kim.basinger/721812

Ethnicity: Basinger's ancestry includes German, Swedish, Irish and Native American, and she was raised a Methodist.

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000107/bio

Kim has English, and a smaller amount of German, Scottish, and Scots-Irish (Northern Irish), ancestry, as well as remote French roots. She is also often attributed as having Swedish and Cherokee Native American ancestry, but it is not clear if these lineages have been verified/documented.

reply

I don't think prabook does the research. Ethnicelebs does. prabook, like Wikipedia and the IMDb, just goes by whatever a celeb states is their ancestry. Ethnicelebs actually looks into the various celebs' family trees, and if a celeb states they are Native American, it looks at the Dawes Rolls to verify such a claim.

My hunch is that Basinger is entirely of European ancestry, and of mostly German ancestry.

reply

I'm willing to bet that Kim Basinger has borderline personality disorder at the very least:
https://www.datalounge.com/thread/21717646-borderline-personality-disorder-

reply

In a way, I think that Kim suffered from the same sort of fate as fellow Batman film alumnus, Alicia Silverstone roughly a decade later. Just as quickly as audiences fell in love with Kim, they turned on her. People probably now don't remember just how toxic Kim Basinger's reputation was during the Braselton/Marrying Man/Boxing Helena/Alec Baldwin period in the '90s. Kim didn't help her cause by having a reputation for being difficult to work with and a flake.

reply

In a way, Kim's career arc may have been somewhat similar to that of Sharon Stone's. Both when you get down to it, were sex symbol type actresses of very limited range. Both broke through relatively late in their careers (Kim and Sharon were already well into their 30s when they did Batman and Basic Instinct respectively). Granted, Kim was already a household name by the time that she did Batman but she wasn't officially seen as a major A-list star until she did that movie. Basically, they didn’t have enough time to fully capitalize off her her newly found A-list status. Kim was already well past the age of 40 when she won the Oscar for LA Confidential, which presumably was her big comeback.

I suspect that women the most part, hated them, which is problematic because in Hollywood, you as an actresses have something of a female following for all the love stories/romcoms that they’ll be headlining. And on top of all that, they quickly gained reputations as a pain in the asses to work with, which is always less tolerated from actresses than actors.

reply

Paul Newman was blessed with the odd character role every few years. Robert Redford had to produce his own films until Marvel came along.

Michael Douglass gets the odd role now.

Richard Gere. Even I used to have a no homo crush on that guys face. His looks withered slightly. Roles dried up. Gone, done. Misogyny and patriarchy!!111! /S

How about MISANDRY because women refused to pay money to watch his movies once he lost his looks! those sexist women only care about one thing! /s

At least the older male stars look pretty much the same, except old wrinkles and grey hair.

Half the female actresses dont even look the same as they did when they gained their fame, you can barely recognize them, Either through surgery where they look like aliens or the weight changes and wall hitting, wrinkles and face warps.

Im sure if a dude changed his whole look for a downturn without cementing himself as a side character actor it would be the same deal.

but nah, white knights need to throw out nets of crumbs in the hopes of attracting some pussy.

reply

I suspect that after Kim aged out of the sex symbol roles (bare in mind that Kim was already well into her 40s when she played a prostitute in LA Confidential) there wasn't a great demand for her other skill sets. I also suspect that Kim's career may have also suffered because she was at her most employable during her child rearing years. After that the two movies that she did in 1994 (The Getaway with her then husband Alec Baldwin and Robert Altman's Ready to Wear) flopped she took three years off to have a baby with Baldwin. And then after presumably getting her career on track with LA Confidential, she goes on another three year hiatus. Basically, she spent the later part of the '90s on the sidelines to be a stay at home mom. This was compounded by the fact that Kim already had a domineering (and allegedly abusive) husband, some people in Hollywood likely still having a grudge against her due to the Boxing Helena and Marrying Man (and maybe her outburst over Do the Right Thing being snubbed at the 1990 Oscars) debacles, and her own mental health issues to cope with.

The marriage to Alec Baldwin was probably real the beginning of the end for Kim. She was so dickmatized, that she didn't fully realize that hooking up with a certifiable asshole like Baldwin was the wrong move until it was too late.

reply

I suspect all of Baldwin's wives end up thinking that.

reply

I'm going go out on a limb and say, that I strongly believe that Kim may suffer from bipolar disorder. I know that I'm making an armchair diagnosis and just speculating over what may be "wrong" (psychologically) with a celebrity but please hear me out. Look at the way that Kim *allegedly* behaved on the set of The Marrying Man, that sounds awfully consistent with a person going through a manic episode. Remember when Mariah Carey was behaving quite strangely on MTV's TRL and it later turned out that she was going through a manic episode fueled by bipolar disorder.

The long time cover is that Kim suffers from "social anxiety disorder". But people who are bipolar also tend to be anxiety ridden. If you don't believe me, take a look at when Kristy McNichol (who is also bipolar) appeared on The Arsenio Hall Show:
https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showpost.php?p=5351104&postcount=12

Kim has admitted that she has struggled with agoraphobia, which simply put goes hand in hand with bipolar disorder:
https://www.google.com/search?ei=bbiEXI3ZIs6MsQWGg4SIAw&q=bipolar+agoraphobia&oq=bi&gs_l=psy-ab.1.0.35i39l2j0i67l8.1067.1912..3694...1.0..0.108.211.0j2......0....1..gws-wiz.....6..0i131j0.jda_3bPyH1E

Also, people who are bipolar can also struggle with PTSD. There's little doubt that Kim went through hell while being married to Alec Baldwin, which in this regard, likely made her situation must worse:
https://www.verywellmind.com/the-effect-of-ptsd-and-bipolar-disorder-2797517

Kim's periodic hiatuses (she seemed to really start to slow down after she had her daughter with Alec Baldwin back in '95) could be in part because she simply doesn't want to work. It could be due to being unable to keep up with the pace or putting together simple tasks:
https://themighty.com/2016/08/why-i-cant-work-with-bipolar-disorder/

https://www.webmd.com/bipolar-disorder/going-to-work-bipolar

reply

If Kim is indeed bipolar, her daughter has my deepest sympathies.

Although I'm not convinced, most of the symptoms you describe are in fact anxiety-related, and people can have pure anxiety disorders without being bipolar, I invite you to look up "general anxiety disorder" and other anxiety-related syndromes.

And the thing is that while I've looked at various celebrity breakdows and rudely told the world "HEY, HE/SHE'S HAVING A MANIC EPISODE", I've never seen Basinger behave like a person experiencing mania. Now that could be because she has a form of bipolar that doesn't involve full-blown mania (look up "hypomania"), or because her people have managed to hush up any episodes... or it could be that she doesn't have bipolar disorder.

reply

Of course, I'm not 100% sure with my assumption that Kim Basinger is bipolar, but either way, there's little doubt in my mind that she has some sort of mental illness. The way that she *allegedly* behaved while making The Marrying Man speaks for itself:
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/TroubledProduction/FilmMToZ

Basinger was accused of habitual lateness (she kept production waiting on the set due to her elaborate morning routine, which included washing her hair with only Evian water and shampoo), flashing the crew, talking filthy on open walkie-talkies, refusing to shoot in sunlight, and demanding that no one look at her. Stories also included Basinger's feud with Simon over her dialogue (Basinger at one point told Simon, "This isn't funny. Whoever wrote this doesn't understand comedy.") and a prima-donna attitude that ultimately resulted in the firing of the original director of photography because she didn’t like how she looked in the test shots that he had taken. One person from the set claimed that at one point, Basinger pushed director Jerry Rees aside and tried to direct a musical number herself. Basinger also wouldn’t settle for having her makeup touched up between close-up shots. No, she had to have her makeup completely removed and re-applied between takes, so that retakes would take hours instead of minutes. She also wanted to shut down production so she could fly to Brazil to consult a psychic.

https://books.google.com/books?id=dxc0bdbkkfEC&q=Kim+Basinger#v=snippet&q=Kim%20Basinger&f=false

I mean, who else behaves like that if something isn't properly "wired" in her brain? Her parents even wondered if as a child, whether or not she was autistic. And agoraphobia, which Kim has admitted to suffering from is technically, a mental illness:
https://www.merckmanuals.com/home/mental-health-disorders/anxiety-and-stress-related-disorders/agoraphobia

reply

One of the things that makes playing Armchair Psychologist with Hollywood celebrities a little tricky is the fact that a hell of a lot of people would behave that badly if they could get away with it. The behavior you describe is monumentally annoying and irresponsible, and in a regular person would be evidence of a serious personality disorder, but the fact is that Basinger found herself in a position where she was on the top of the heap, and could get away with absolutely any sort of ridiculous unprofessional behavior at her job. So she went for it, and found that nobody wanted to work with her after that!

But yeah, she's talked about agoraphobia and other forms of mental illness, and my guess is something anxiety-based. And my guess about her ex-husband Alec Baldwin is Narcissistic Personality Disorder, which is so common among celebrities that it's my default pretend diagnosis.

reply

Regarding The Marrying Man, Kim to the best of my knowledge never owned up or apologized for her behavior. Take a look at this interview that she did with Chris Wallace on ABC back in 1991:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnxUUdYn7h4#t=10m34s

It's as if Kim was saying that because she doesn't care about the director's past credentials (according to her, Jerry Rees was just a yes-man and a puppet for the penny pinchers at Disney), that gives her a right to run rough-shot over his authority. I wonder if it also bothered Kim that Tim Burton also got his start in animation and Batman was only his third major motion picture.

Looking at some of the interviews that she has done, Kim has more than often come across as extremely angry (like the whole world is conspiring against her), disillusioned, self-serving, and trying to convince us that she's practically the smartest person in the room.

I can only recall a couple of Basinger interviews. One she did for a 2005 Batman Special Edition DVD documentary where came across as quite sweet and humble. She was talking about how much she enjoyed having little kids come up to her and say "aren't you Vicki Vale/that woman Batman rescued?"

Another one was for a L.A. Confidential DVD documentary where she spoke about how humbled she was when Curtis Hanson, the film's late director, specifically chose her to play what turned out to be an Oscar-winning role as 'Lyn Bracken'.

reply

That's the thing that I don't entirely understand about Kim Basinger. There are times in which I've seen interviews of her, where she comes across as you said, really sweet, classy, and humble (and her soft-spoken awkwardness and Georgia twang oddly makes her more charming and endearing):

I honestly think that Ms. Basigner unlike her ex-Alec Baldwin, is truly at heart, a nice, good person. It's just that she sometimes says and goes about certain things what I think is the wrong way (or is too strident if that makes sense). Like when she was working on Cool World and wanted to show it to sick children whom she had been visiting in hospitals. While I do think that Kim's heart was in the right place, it came at the expense of ruining the final product. Bare in mind that Ralph Bakshi didn't intend on making Cool World an out and out "kids movie".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7-P3-SkiJA

reply

I'll give Kim credit for this, she does seem to have a genuinely honest affinity towards children. I recall reading a Movieline article (this was after Batman Returns came out but before the series was retooled/given a soft reboot with Batman Forever), Kim said that one of the best things to come out of being in Batman was that she now had young children as fans. I mean before that, Kim appeared in movies (such as 9 1/2 Weeks) that weren't exactly "kid friendly".

http://movieline.com/1994/01/01/no-regrets/2/

Q: Did you see the finished film?
A: Not from top to bottom. The films that I've seen are The Natural, because Robert Redford made me go to the opening because it was a benefit for Sundance, and I learned from that what a horrific experience it was to watch myself. And I went to the premiere of Batman.
Q: What'd you think of that one?
A: When I walked on that set, after Sean Young took a dive off a horse or whatever happened to her, I felt the thunder under my feet the first day, how big the movie was going to be. It wasn't a movie, it was an experience. I felt like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, wondering when I was going to land. Michael and Tim Burton were great; Nicholson was just Nicholson, we got along fine. The most important thing that came from it is my relationship to children now, and who I am to them. They could care less about Kim Basinger--when I walk into a children's hospital or a school, it's all about Vicki Vale.
Q: Any interest in reviving that character in future sequels if they asked you?
A: I haven't heard anything about Batman 3. But if Vicki Vale could continue, absolutely I would do it if I had a chance to reach as many children as the first one did. The second Batman was a much darker thing, so there wasn't much to capture the children.

reply

At the very least, she seems to be a better mother than Baldwin is a father to their daughter.

reply

This is why I don't entirely understand what Kim saw in Alec Baldwin. What I mean is that despite her occasional displays of neurosis and inflated ego, Kim none the less, still gave off the impression that she was a lovely, elegant, kind-hearted, gentle woman. Kim in some respects, reminds me of Liv Tyler. Like Kim, Liv often gave off this soft, hyper feminine, earnest, gentle, compassionate, ethereal vibe.

Alec Baldwin was a handsome chappie back in the day, and who knew what a jerk he was back in the early 90s?

reply

I'm guessing that perhaps, Kim was trying to in theory, think ahead. What I mean is that maybe becoming one part of a "power couple" (a la Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, etc.) would lend herself some longevity. Demi Moore as I just mentioned, in quite a calculated move, moved from a fading Brat Packer in Emilio Estevez to Bruce Willis, who was on Moonlighting (which was a very hot and successful TV show at the time) and was about to really break through with Die Hard.

When Kim hooked up with Alec Baldwin, she was at the peak of her career having just done Batman, and Baldwin was looked at as a star on the rise having done Beetlejuice and The Hunt for Red October.

reply

Yes, I can totally agree that Kim hooked up with Baldwin because of his rising career. You could say he was a fool to hook up with her but in hindsight it really looks like they deserved each other.

reply

I also think that Kim fell under Baldwin's spell because she was attracted to the idea or myth that bad boys are sexy and she could mend their ways at some point due to the power of love. It goes back to the Beauty and the Beast dynamic. Kim herself even admitted that when she was younger, she was attracted to "bad boys".

I suppose that what I'm pointing at and why I think Kim may have bipolar disorder and/or a personality disorder (from what I've gathered, most borderlines are now diagnosed with Bipolar II, basically depression with briefer periods of mood elevation but never any episodes of mania) because as I said earlier, there have been incidents where she has displayed inappropriate anger and was incapable of taking accountability for her own problems.

Angelina Jolie and Winona Rider are two celebrities who are also theorized or rumored to have a personality disorder (be it borderline or histrionic).:

I love how Kim lights up when talking about that otherwise decidedly creepy and morbid Tom Petty video where she plays a corpse:

Now that was one of the coolest things I've ever done in my life. It was classic, wasn't it? He was a doll, and he was so sweet and asked me to do it, and both of us are extremely shy so we just said three words to each other the whole time. I'll never forget how heavy that dress was! And I had to be dead the whole time. You know, it's really one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life, because I had to be completely weightless to be in his arms the way I was. It won all those awards, and the kids love it—even today!

I would like to assume that Kim despite her own history of difficult if not downright bad behavior, was still raised to be a proper southern lady, something that's missing from her daughter. Kim's daughter quite frankly (even if you ignore the awful shit that her father, Alec Baldwin said), can be a spoiled brat. She's right up there with Lori Loughlin's daughter, Olivia Jade:

And she wore a very deep plunging neckline top that was quite unflattering and strangely inappropriate for the setting. She must not have test-worn it before the taping, because she spent the entire time fussing and pulling at it. What a dope.

She is plain. It's silly that they're trying to make her the next big thing.

Ireland Baldwin has average looks and a vile personality. At least Rumer Willis is actually nice, despite her looks.

I don't like to associate a person's looks with their personality.

There are plenty of absolutely heinous super-models and pin-ups.

As for Ireland Basinger, considering her famous parents, I'm surprised she hasn't moved into acting.

Kim just strikes me as one of those parents who desperately desires to live vicariously through her child:

So, this B- list celebrity offspring of a just about permanent A list actor prefers women to men. The thing is though, men are who pay her for sex. Her parents pay all her bills directly. Very minimal cash is given to her because of her drug issues so if she wants coke, she sleeps with men. At some point it would not shock me to see a flood of sex tapes starring our offspring. Oh honey, nobody in Hollywood EVER apologizes for abusing their power or acting like a dick on movie sets! Most of them do it if they get the chance! Okay, occasionally one will act contrite, but only if there's a scandal or a career implosion, and their publicist convinces them that their own chance of a comeback is to go out and grovel, apologize and act humble (Johnny Depp will probably try it soon).

But most Hollywood train wrecks never express any remorse, and if Basinger hasn't, then that's still within the limits of normal Hollywood behavior, and not evidence of mental illness.

If you're curious about her, I have vague memories of her giving interviews and talking about anxiety and agoraphobia, look them up because I just don't remember much because it wasn't entertainingly scandalous. That's where you'll find more information about whatever mental illness is going on, because again, I don't think her behavior on "The Marrying Man" is evidence of anything but an ego temporarily out of control.

reply

I get what you're saying, and you do probably have a point about maybe Kim post-Batman was drunk on power so to speak and needed a dose of humility. But bare in mind, there was already questions surrounding her mental state even if you take The Marrying Man (half of Kim's behavior seemed like her just being an unconscious asshole the other half seems to be a case of her having really bad obsessive compulsive issues) out of the equation. Before she hooked up with Alec Baldwin, Kim got herself involved with Prince. There are rumors that Kim's family were worried that Prince had her under some sort of spell.

Another alternate diagnosis that I've heard (while watching this Reelz program called Irreconcilable Differences on Kim's relationship with Alec Baldwin) is that Kim shows traces of somebody who suffers from not only attachment anxiety, but also cognitive dissonance. As for that latter, that means that fame and celebrity is both Kim's high and low. Around the time that Kim's movie I Dreamed of Africa came out, she did this interview with Charlie Rose (before we knew what a creep he was but still), and she said that while she truly enjoys what goes on in-between action and cut, she has a hard time dealing with other stuff in the film business like junkets, talk shows, crowds, publicity, etc.

I suffer from Anxiety and OCD, and whilst I'm well aware that it can cause me to be a right annoyance to many people, as I'm sure you and Otter know too well, I don't understand how such conditions, or similar neuroses, like agoraphobia, could make someone behave like such a prima donna.

In my experience, such neuroses tends to make people act in a more compliant and deferential manner, because we're so eager to please, and afraid of being judged and of what people might think of us, not difficult and petulant.

That type of shitty and bratty behaviour is what I'd associate with Borderline Personality Disorder or Narcissistic Personality Disorder, which Otter, quite understandably, attributes to Alec Baldwin.

reply

I think that Kim Basinger is at the very least, a covert-narcissist:
https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/communication-success/201601/7-signs-covert-introvert-narcissist

https://hackspirit.com/a-covert-narcissist-5-warning-signs-youre-dealing-with-one/

You can make the argument or assumption that people like that cannot tolerate the possible scrutiny of being in the limelight, so they attach themselves to institutions and social causes (Kim is a PETA and animal rights activist). To put it in another way, they generally don't like the attention on themselves because they feel that they won’t measure up to others. They prefer their reassurance to be in private.

And her behavior on the set of The Marrying Man (demanding that nobody look at her, having the director of photography fired, etc.) seems to be a clear cut example of an individual lacking in empathy.

Take a look at what Kim said about her child-rapist character in Fifty Shades Darker and don't tell me that this is a woman who has a colossal ego and is a tad bit out of touch with reality:
https://www.anneofcarversville.com/women/2016/4/29/kim-basinger-talks-strong-woman-status-fifty-shades-darker-to-the-edit

My character’s strength is more emotional and mental – she shows Christian all his moves.”

My character Elena is the woman who came into power early. I know this character: I don’t have to read the books, I feel her. I’d love to see every woman come into their power. If I could equate her to anyone, in terms of the adversities she’s had to overcome, it would be Coco Chanel – she faced challenges growing up, and became one of the greatest designers who will ever live. That’s what Elena is like: she doesn’t have to be crass or petty, she’s just very direct.

reply

Well most professional and experienced actors learn how to get inside their characters' heads and that often requires some form of empathy and understanding (I wonder if that's why Kevin Spacey turned out to be such a real-life psycho...), so it stands to reason that they will often focus on a character's more positive and endearing traits. That doesn't mean that Basinger is condoning child abuse.

There is one thing that a find a tad annoying about Basinger though, and that's her claim that she's part Native American (Cherokee to be precise). According to the following site, she (most likely) isn't: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:ZsFzoUN3mfMJ:ethnicelebs.com/kim-basinger+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk

reply

I don't know where Kim herself was getting at with her comments about her Fifty Shades... character, so I can't answer for other actors. The thing with her, is that she seems to be a celebrity who tends to lack in a certain level of self-awareness. It's like some of the stuff that she says comes without the slightest hint of irony. That would be like Michael Keaton quite seriously, pretentiously, and/or sincerely saying that Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming (or any other bad guy character that he has played in the past like in Pacific Heights or Desperate Measures) is actually the real hero or a positive role model and is a guy that we should legitimately admire:

Another reason why Kim may herself be a narcissist is that apparently, during one of the handful of times that she actually appeared on a late night talk show (I don't know if it was Leno or Letterman, just YouTube it), she was off-puttingly neurotic. She spent much the interview talking about her OCD and all of the things that she's afraid of?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-4413418/Extracts-Alex-Baldwin-s-new-book-reveals-all.html#comments

Simply put, always talking about oneself is a narcissistic trait, regardless of the personality disorder involved, or even without a personality disorder.

And here's a story that Mac MacDonald told about Kim when they were making Batman:
https://www.batman-online.com/features/2016/9/6/mac-mcdonald-interview-joker-goon-actor-in-batman-1989

I was in the dressing room early on my own and I heard all kinds of work going on. Hammers, saws and drills. My dresser, Dave Whiting (he was a dresser on the film but went on to be a costume designer), came in and I asked him what was going on with all the noise. He said, "Listen Mac, there's been a bit of a kerfuffle this morning. Kim came in and apparently she had seen Jack's dressing room. So now, they're knocking the wall through between Kim's dressing room and the one next door, and putting in an arch to make it all one big room which will make it 10ft bigger so it will be bigger than his [Jack's]dressing room."

I just though "Ah man, it's all true! Hollywood has arrived in England." All this one-up-manship bullshit. But it probably wasn't even her [Kim]. She was probably on the phone with her agent and mentioned that Jack's dressing room was a little larger than hers...then [jokingly] the agent told Kim to put the phone down and he rang the producers and said "What the f*ck is going on over there??" That's how it works. So I wouldn't put it on her shoulders because she was very nice and very friendly.

She also compared the fall-out of her personal financial deal from Batman to rape:
https://www.quora.com/Is-there-such-a-thing-as-an-actor-only-receiving-a-rape-deal-financially-as-Kim-Basinger-put-it-regarding-the-money-she-made-for-Batman-1989

The thing with celebrities like Kim Basinger that we have to understand that just because they're habitually or pathologically shy, are socially awkward, and suffer from anxieties/phobias doesn't necessarily make them a bad person. It is what it is and it make us human. Daryl Hannah (who incidentally, appeared in the movie Hard Country with Kim Basinger back in the early 1980s) said when revealing the fact that she's autistic, that she didn't try to avoid publicity or public appearances because she was "above it all", she did it because she was afraid.

Maybe that's why I want to feel some sympathy and feel that I can actually relate to Kim Basinger and Daryl Hannah because I'm also an individual who is on the autism spectrum, and regularly struggles with socializing, anxiety and interpersonal relationships. Now granted, it does seem awfully disingenuous and hypocritical to have the issues that those two women have, and yet choose to be in a profession like acting, where you pretty much have to sacrifice your privacy and anonymity for fame and fortune.

When I posed the question on Quora pertaining to whether or not Kim Basinger may be bipolar somebody responded with the tale-tell answer that it's none of my business other than Kim Basinger's personal doctor:

reply

The thing with your argument however, is that bipolar disorder is in fact for the most part, anxiety ridden (this goes back to my earlier point regarding Kristy McNichol on The Arsenio Hall Show). And something is just telling me that there's more to Kim's behavior on the Marrying Man set, then simply her being an asshole primadonna (not that I'm letting her off the hook or making excuses for her):

In short, many people with bipolar disorder also have anxiety disorders, and anxiety can also be a symptom of bipolar. It’s likely that in addition to bipolar, Kristy McNichol and Kim Basinger also suffer from some form of social anxiety that makes them uncomfortable sitting in front of an audience.

reply

Dude, you just posted ten links, in an argument about twenty-year-old gossip! Step away from the computer, go outside, talk to a real live human being.

And then consider that you're trying to pull the equivalent of judging a person's mental health by seeing how they react to winning the lottery, and suddenly having enough money to do everything they've ever wanted to do and get away with everything they couldn't until then. Because that's how suddenly landing on top of the Hollywood heap has got to feel, suddenly you're rich and everyone says "absolutely" to everything, and any and all indulgences are provided for the asking. People do not behave normally when given that kind of license, and you can't tell much about their mental health during such a time, because everyone acts crazy when overindulged.

For the sake of your own mental health, give the subject of Kim Basinger's behavior on the set of "The Marrying Man" a rest.

reply

First off, you're talking to me right now from a computer regarding this whole issue in the first place. Secondly, don't fucking call me "dude" or "honey" again! And you said that you don't think that bipolar disorder is at all an anxiety-related issue, so I was trying to prove to you otherwise (even if it means posting at least ten links to get my point across).

And what's not to say that Kim Basinger didn't act troublesome or had a healthy ego long before she made Batman? It was just that now that she was seen as an A-list star instead of a no-name up and comer (when she was guest starring on stuff like Charlie's Angels, The Six Million Dollar Man, and Vega$), it was much easier to zero in on her antics. The director of Never Say Never Again, Irvin Kershner certainly didn't care much for her.

Not every successful actor suddenly decides that it's perfectly okay for them to act like an asshole once they reach that success. I mean, take for instance, Chevy Chase, who more than likely didn't suddenly decide to become a jerk once he hit it big with Saturday Night Live. Acting is essentially, a very insecure profession if one doesn't have a healthy mind-set. You seem to just be making a hasty generalization with your whole lottery analogy.

Kim by the time that she made The Marrying Man, had been a professional working actor at least a good 10 years. She wasn't just some wet-behind the ears rookie, or on the surface immature child (even though she was actually acting like a spoiled brat on set). And the subject of Kim's behavior on the set of The Marrying Man is in fact prevalent, because that's more than likely one of the reasons why Hollywood won't cast her anymore.

How is me theorizing that Kim Basinger has some sort of mental illness, which could possibly shed some light on her personality and alleged on-set behavior (and in return, help explain why "Hollywood won't cast her anymore") a trivial issue!? It isn't that "cut and dry" as just suggesting that "She just made Batman so that in her mind, gave her licence to act like an unprofessional diva on her following movie". There has to be a good reason for why Hollywood won't cast her anymore outside of her simply being a sex symbol who just got old!

And this alleged story pointing towards Kim Basinger and her apparent neurotic tendencies, is under 20 years old:

https://web.archive.org/web/20170514185311/http://crazydaysandnights.net/2015/01/blind-items-revealed-40-2.html

This former A list mostly movie actress who kind of fell off the planet when she and the A list mostly television actor got divorced more than a decade ago has had her chances to work. Really famous for one iconic movie, the actress recently got a chance to star in an independent movie with a small budget and a great script. The budget was tiny but our actress wanted two separate trailers and cakes, yes cakes, delivered three times a day each day of shooting and had specific dimensions and flavors for each cake. Yeah, the producers passed and ended up landing two Academy Award winners/nominees for the lead roles.

This isn't necessarily an *ultimate* sign that Kim must be bipolar but I can't help but think of Rene Russo, who is more or less, a contemporary of her's (they both got their starts in the fashion-modeling world and are roughly the same age). After she appeared in the movie Yours, Mine and Ours in 2005, she mysteriously dropped off the grid so to speak. Not only wasn't she not appearing in anything for over six years (the next time that she appeared in a movie was in Thor), there were hardly any public photos or interviews with her. Rene eventually revealed that she suffers from bipolar disorder, which naturally could shed a great deal of light for why her career suddenly slowed down:
https://www.quora.com/Why-doesnt-Rene-Russo-ever-have-a-lead-role

Like Kim Basinger, Rene Russo doesn't get a lot of lead, predominate or headlining roles anymore (as a matter of fact, Rene was never the first billed star in a movie with the exception of Buddy from 1997) and seems to at the very least, be semi-retired from acting:
https://lebeauleblog.com/2013/11/15/what-the-hell-happened-to-rene-russo/

reply

Now that I think about it, perhaps in Kim Basinger's case, she's one of those people who because of their mental health diagnosis, they don't have a real grounded grasp of reality. So they pursue an unrealistic career with a low success rate like the arts/show business. It goes hand in hand with the tormented artist trope.

https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/64852/scientists-tortured-artist-real-thing

And with acting, being able to emote and having an expressive face is highly important for effective translation of stories across the big screen and onstage. Being able to immerse yourself fully in a role or a performative "persona" is key. It certainly indicates an ability to escape reality and "become" a different person.

reply

Reading this interview with Kim Basinger back in 1991, what took me aback is why is she so full of bitterness, self-importance, and cynicism (which she naturally denies):
http://movieline.com/1991/01/01/kim-basinger-on-good-kissing-her-academy-awards-outburst-and-conversations-with-god/2/

It really hit me, that Kim at least back then, was incredibly egotistical and ignorant. Like when she said this:

KB: Actors and actresses are the only ones with an ounce of creativity in them. Bad directors, bad production people, it's really sad what people don't know about Hollywood. After we finish this interview I'll take you aside and tell you some things you won't believe about some of these people.

You would think that being an actor for a living, you would actually gain some perspective and understanding how films are created. In the case of Batman, is Kim implying that Tim Burton, Anton Furst, Sam Hamm, Bob Ringwood, Roger Platt, or Danny Elfman don't have any ounce of creativity? My point is, filmmaking is a team effort and the actors are only a small part of the creative process. Arguably actors are the least creative - they are given lines to say, told how to say them, what to wear and how to stand.

Why should I take your opinions that seriously if your vocabulary is limited to having to address me as "dude" right from the jump. And again, I'm not even directly talking to you when I share my opinions. You aren't the only one who is going to read it.

And there are various places online (such as Looper, JoBlo Videos and there WTF Happened to... videos, and LeBeau's le Blog and its "What the Hell Happened to..." series) that give attention to past A-list or rising stars careers and why it may have faltered. So aren't those by extension, given certain actors too much attention, if they aren't as relevant today as they have have been in the 1980s-90s? If that isn't the case, then why are we asking such questions about why Hollywood doesn't case Kim Basinger these days as when she was making Batman back in the '80s?

In a round about way, Kim may be somewhat similar to Lark Voorhies (AKA Lisa Turtle on Saved by the Bell), who also had to drop out of the limelight presumably due to serious emotional and mental health issues. Besides Lupus, Lark suffers from bipolar disorder, which her mother (who serves as some sort of guardian a la Britney Spears' father in recent years) has confirmed. Like Kim Basinger, Lark Voorhies pretty much lives a quiet life and doesn't really act anymore. It has been theorized that like Kim with Alec Baldwin, Martin Lawrence was more or less, the impetus (both through physical and emotional abuse) for her own mental breakdown.

This actress was on a popular TV series in the 1980s and 90s.

We are waiting for her to raise her hand and tell her own story about powerful men who use their power to abuse young girls in the industry.

When she was at her peak, there was a famous TV and film actor who was abusive to her, and his actions caused her considerable distress.

We’re told that those events contributed to her severe emotional distress and her career downfall.

She hasn’t had a steady job in at least ten years, and she sometimes behaves oddly in public. We’re not sure if she saved any evidence from that time, but it would certainly go a long way to making her case.

A former cast mate of hers could tell what he knows, but there’s a problem.

Like the actress, he is now seen as unstable and unreliable.

It’s a shame, too, because they both have a lot of very compelling stories to tell about our actress as well as other young girls in the industry who have been abused by powerful men.

Actress: Lark Voorhies
Her Former Cast Mate: Dustin Diamond
Abusive actor: Martin Lawrence

And yet, she kept flaunting her courtship (and boasting about how she enjoyed being a mom) with Baldwin to make it known that she was a "kept woman". Remember when they guest starred on The Simpsons as themselves, hosted SNL together, or when they made that movie The Getaway, where they did all of these hardcore (or hardcore for what the R-rating would permit) sex scenes? It also cemented the notion that Kim was unapproachable, stand-offish and unattainable given that Alec Baldwin was the type of guy who would get into physical altercations with the paparazzi (like when he broke that guy's nose when he and Kim were taking their newborn daughter home from the hospital).

reply

I'm sorry, I just haven't followed Basinger's career in enough detail to address any of those points.

Except that I don't think Basinger managed her career all that well, if it's true her fan base was mostly male then Baldwin wasn't good for her career. But then, Baldwin is never good for any woman's career, except maybe Tina Fey's.

reply

The fact that Kim got involved with something as retched as Boxing Helena in the first place (why did Kim think that people would be interested in seeing one of the world's most beautiful women missing her limbs in a movie) is a clear testament that she didn't know how to manage her career all that well. Nor was making a second movie with Alec Baldwin (The Getaway) when people clearly weren't interested in seeing the two of them on screen together the first time (The Marrying Man).

Also, after LA Confidential brought her career back on track, Kim curiously and quizzically goes on another three year hiatus (because the hell with striking while the iron is hot and keeping the momentum going) before reemerging with crap like I Dreamed of Africa (did Kim now that she was an Oscar winner, suddenly think that she was Meryl Streep and this was her version of Out of Africa or Born Free) and Bless the Child.

Shortly after that, Kim virtually couldn't get arrested in Hollywood. I don't mean to sound factitious, but I legitimately wonder if most millennials even know who she is at this point in her life and career? I mean outside of Batman of course, hardly any of Kim's movies have made much of a lasting impact on pop culture.

A Glimpse into the Private Life of Kim Basinger
http://telepixtvcgi.warnerbros.com/v2/news/0406/12/2/text.html
April 12, 2006
It’s the very private Kim Basinger on the record about her bitter custody battle, the nasty tabloid headlines, protecting her daughter and even plastic surgery.
So how does the gorgeous 52-year-old star feel about going under the knife? “You ought to do what makes you feel best,” she said. “I’m not against anything. I hope to God you get a good surgeon!”
But aside from the laughs, the Oscar winner told “Extra” that Hollywood’s obsession with beauty can be scary. “So much talk about plastic surgery and Botox and everything that is becomes,” she said. “A frightmare. It’s really is. A total frightmare.”
Kim stars as America’s first lady in the new political thriller “The Sentinel.” But she fiercely protects her privacy outside the glare of Hollywood’s unforgiving spotlight.
The sole thing she wants to protect? Her daughter: “The only one I want to protect from anything is my daughter.” Kim said it’s been hard to keep her daughter, Ireland, away from all the ugly headlines about her bitter custody battle with ex-husband Alec Baldwin.
“We talk very openly. We have a very close relationship,” Kim said of her daughter. “I’ve said, ‘Ireland, you will see this stuff, hear it,’ and I said, ‘We will discuss what bothers you.'”
The Academy Award winning actress said, “She loves being a mom.” But her other love at the moment is her latest role. Kim revealed there’s only one reason she took the part: co-star and “The Sentinel” producer, Michael Douglas.
“I knew it would be a good, good ride,” Kim said. And the ride includes a red-hot love scene with Michael. So will she kiss and tell?
“They all ask me, ‘How was it to kiss Michael Douglas?'” Kim revealed, before admitting, “It was phenomenal. Yeah. But that’s Catherine’s department!”
Check out Kim as the first lady when “The Sentinel” opens April 21.

Well let's put it this way, Kim at the height of her career back in the '80s was married once before. I don't if I have all of my facts straight, believe that Kim openly or freely discussed or showed off the fact that she was already married even though she was being marketed a sexy, desirable, male fantasy woman/blonde bombshell. My point is that if you're an actress who's whole main appeal is how attractive and sexy you are, then don't you think that from a common sense, marketing standpoint that you want to present yourself (even if it isn't the truth) as attainable as possible.

Granted, Ron Synder-Britton isn't exactly a "name" (Kim herself wasn't really a "name" either when they first got to gether) like Alec Baldwin, but still. The fact that Alec Baldwin even back then, had the reputation for being a narcissistic bully/asshole/wannabe macho guy who likes to get into fights didn't help Kim's case. But it just felt like one way or another, Kim get forcing Baldwin on to us (go and YouTube late night talk show interviews with her circa 1993-94 with Kim and you'll know what I mean). Also, Kim in interviews consistently talking about her daughter that she had with Baldwin made her feel "boring and old (or older than she actually needed to be or come across at the time)". One of Kim's biggest career mistakes in my estimation was trying to co-brand herself with Baldwin.

I'm certain that there are men out there who get their rocks off being around vulnerable, childlike women. Kim Basinger is pretty much the embodiment of vulnerability, so for Alec Baldwin, it was likely a control thing.

reply

I dont think Baldwin is picky about who he pushes around.

reply

Kim gives me Greta Garbo vibes to tell you the truth. I'm pretty sure that her mental state would've marginally been better had she not been around Alec Baldwin, but Kim was already mentally fragile (she has admitted to being agoraphobic). I mean, has Kim ever been out in public outside of the rare times that she shows up to a premiere (which was back in February of two years ago for Fifty Shades Darker) to a movie that she just happens to be in, or she isn't doing something animal related? The last time that I saw Kim "out and about" was last July in Los Angeles when she was holding a dog's corpse to protest South Korea's dog meat trade.

I don't know how truthful or valid this is but I read somewhere that part of the reason for why we didn't see Vicki Vale again in Batman Returns was because Alec Baldwin had a hand in stopping Kim from participating:

http://www.avclub.com/article/alec-baldwin-explains-his-cold-war-against-scrawny-253328#comment-3243404751

Well according to the “The Real Reason Why Hollywood Won’t Hire Alec Baldwin Anymore” article I read, it all goes back to Kim Basinger getting her revenge after Alec wouldn’t let her be in Batman Returns.

I don't think there was room for Vicki Vale in "Batman Returns", it would have interfered with the weird relationship between Bruce and Selina where they realized they were both enemies and kindred spirits. Vale would have only gotten in the way, and Michelle Pfeiffer would have blown Basinger off the screen.

Which isn't to say that Baldwin isn't a big enough jerk to interfere with his wife's career. By all accounts he's an asshole.

Vicki from my understanding, was in one of the earlier drafts for Batman Returns (I don't think that it was officially called Batman Returns yet, but Batman II) by Sam Hamm. In it if I remember correctly, Bruce Wayne actually contemplated proposing to her.

If you want to read Sam Hamm's script:
http://www.maddogmovies.com/almost/scripts/batman2_hamm.htm

I'm guessing that Tim Burton actually for the most part, liked Hamm's script but he didn't want to repeat himself and he felt the script was too similar to the first movie. In a nutshell, Burton wanted a big departure and he got that with the final script for Batman Returns.

https://lebeauleblog.com/2014/12/08/what-might-have-been-kim-basinger/11/

Basinger was originally supposed to reprise her role as Vicki Vale in Sam Hamm’s draft for the Batman sequel.

Fallout: Batman Returns went through a ton of script revisions. This is reflected in the final movie where the Penguin changes his plans about every 15 minutes. The original script ended with Bruce Wayne proposing to Vale and starting a family unit with Dick Grayson as an adopted child. Director Tim Burton, who wasn’t thrilled to be doing a sequel, canned the script which he deemed too similar to the original Batman. The next screenwriter, Daniel Waters, introduced more dark humor along the lines of his previous movie, Heathers. He also focused his attention more heavily on Selena Kyle/Catwoman. After Waters’ other movie, Hudson Hawk, bombed, Wesley Strick was brought on to take another pass at the script. But by then, Vicki Vale was a distant memory anyway.

reply

That sounds like my assumption was correct, that they decided that Vicki Vale just wasn't that interesting and they wanted to take Wayne's emotional life in a different direction.

Which would let Baldwin off the hook for that one, not that he isn't a great big asshole overall.

Alec Baldwin is one of the few celebrities that immediately comes to my mind whom I legitimately want to kick their ass. Basically, he is the epitome of the selfish, arrogant, spoiled Hollywood actor. The bottom-line is that he's little more than a bigot and a bully who will never change even with professional anger management help. He just told Howard Stern that he doesn't have THAT big of an anger management problem. I mean, dude, you're 60 years old now and have young children. It's one thing to be acting like a jackass when you're in your 20s. It's another thing to be acting like that when you're 60 and you should know better.

Alec reminds me a lot of Mickey Rourke(Kim Basinger connection!) where he's the big, macho guy who just goes outside looking for a fight.

Alec Baldwin just gets shadier and shadier

Alec Baldwin may be the most famous of the Baldwin brothers acting clan, but he may also be the most infamous. And, that's saying a lot, considering younger brother Stephen Baldwin once challenged President Barack Obama to a boxing match and little bro Daniel Baldwin was arrested for running naked through New York's Plaza Hotel on a "crack-binge" screaming  — what else? — "Baldwin!"

Alec, the eldest, has had a long and storied Hollywood career, but his list of bad behavior is as long as his impressive filmography. The Oscar-nominated actor and comedian's tumultuous life off-screen has played out in the public eye since his starring roles in 1988's Beetlejuice and Working Girl. His notorious temper has been well-documented and landed him in hot water with numerous arrests, court cases, and public shamings. To his credit, Alec seems to have begun a more positive second act, remarrying and growing his family, but has this Emmy-winning bad boy really gone good? Let's take a closer look at the shady side of Alec Baldwin.

He's a sociopathic bully, he likes all the negative attention and he knows he'll always get away with it virtually unscathed. It's not like he can't get work and his bank account is always going to be north of 50 million.

Given that the 10th anniversary of her passing just occurred, Kim in some ways reminds me of Farrah Fawcett. Incidentally, Kim Basinger made a guest appearance on Charlie's Angels (the "Angels in Chains" episode) during the first season. Like Kim, Farrah herself, had a troublesome history with men. She was married to Lee Majors, who was allegedly very controlling. He was the type of guy who liked his women to stay at home and have dinner ready by the time he got home from work. Of course, Farrah soon hooked up with Ryan O'Neal, who like Alec Baldwin was for all intents and purposes, a violent narcissist. Farrah also got herself involved with this producer-director, named James Orr, who beat her up.

Val Kilmer was another person (another Kim Basinger connection since they were in The Real McCoy together and Kilmer is also a Batman film alumnus) is another person who thought that they could get away with bulling and dare I say treating people like shit. Unlike Alec Baldwin however, Kilmer is now sadly, collecting his karma with his issues with cancer insuring that he'll never be a leading man again. Not that Kilmer's career as an A-list star was going well even without his cancer ordeal.

Yes there are more male stars overall, but tons of male stars just disapeer and you only remember the ones that have careers after their looks fade. Nobody cries a single tear for those actors. Not a single tear.

How many films do you see Brad Pitt in now he lost his looks? 1, 2 or zero? Tarantino is paying Pitts mortgage single handedly.

Not a single tear is shed.

A woman gets less work and all the wokists start running around with their hands in the air screaming how its so unfair, sexist, patriarchy, cis white males taking advantage etc etc fock off.

Box office draw is all that counts.

The patriarchy is an ass on a seat. It doesnt matter who is paying for the ticket, nobody is stopping women to buy movie tickets.

And dont say there are no decent films for women to see. There are and most dont do well at all.

Annihilation. Bombed the F out.
Widows, bomb.

Fifty Shades, massive hit. Twilight, massive gigantic hit.

Lowest common denominator makes the most money. It puts bums on seats.

Well, as I alluded towards prior (and I'll make this as short and sweet as possible), Kim Basinger's predicament I feel is a simple combination of her age (especially for a woman who was seen more as a glamorous sex symbol then an actual "actress"), her poor choice of roles (honestly, outside of Batman and LA Confidential, it's hard to pick a truly memorable role that she's done or something that can be enjoyed unironically), and not having a lot of support in the industry simply because of the perception of her being flaky.

Being married to a decidedly controversial figure like Alec Baldwin (with his own checkered past) in no doubt, tarnished her reputation. She also lost the momentum that she gained from Batman by appearing in a string of crap movies along with financial and legal issues and her unprofessional, primadonna behavior on set. I'll just say that in Hollywood, no matter how skilled someone is, raw talent can't make up for a bad attitude. Eventually, no one will want to put up with it.

Meanwhile, she lost the momentum that she gained from LA Confidential by appearing in even more crappy movies, going on a another three year hiatus after winning her Oscar, and the whole mess involving her divorce from Baldwin and the custody battle over their kid.

I think part of the problem is she hardly got real interesting roles. This is the spell when you are SO beautiful. She is always the object of male dreams. Fragile, a bit insecure and looking for a protector. I think all her roles are like that - L.A. Confidential, Bond, Batman, 9 1/2 weeks. She couldn't really progress as an actress.

reply

I think that another problem is that Kim doesn't market herself very well. She seems to be one of those people who wants stardom but isn't willing or able to actually put in the work. I think that Kim got into the door just for the sake that she just happened to be so beautiful, but she didn't have the where with all or knowledge to go further than that. I mean, let's be realistic, Kim couldn't rely on her good looks forever (because naturally, people age and get old) if she truly wanted to progress and be taken more seriously as an actress. Kim seems to use her inherent shyness and social anxiety as dare I say an default excuse for why she shouldn't have to play the proverbial Hollywood game.

I also get the impression that Kim takes herself way, way too seriously to the point of pretension. I was watching some of the interviews that she did for this movie called Grudge Match (that she did with Robert DeNiro and Sylvester Stallone), and maybe it's my imagination, but Kim just came across as deadly serious, stiff and perhaps overly sincere. Why does Kim always talk like she's on Valium:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMwATd5CBqM&t

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7UOrGPRKnw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujgyf3hwvMs&t

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gI7OLw448xo

And when Kim actually does have the opportunity to promote herself she uses it as a round about excuse to shove her animal rights activism down people's throats. I tried following her on Twitter (which she hasn't updated in a LONG TIME now) and it was virtually an excuse for Kim to retweet stuff from PETA or any other animal related campaign (such as removing animal dissection at schools) that she feels that we need to read about. She doesn't add any real context or anything in regards to her movies or her personality besides how important it is to help animals.

reply

Also, if anything Kim Basinger herself doesn't appear to want Hollywood to cast her if it creates an inconvenience with her domestic life:
https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/la-et-mn-kim-basinger-11th-hour--20150611-story.html

Though Basinger has appeared in several movies since "L.A Confidential," including reuniting with Hanson for 2002's "8 Mile," the actress turned down a lot of movies because she didn't want to be away from Ireland for an extended time.

"I was there for everything," said Basinger, who is also an animal rights' activist. "She played soccer, she played basketball. You don't want to miss that. I felt it was so important at least for one parent to be there all the time."

Meanwhile, Basinger, who has a small part in the upcoming Russell Crowe-Ryan Gosling film "The Nice Guys," is reading a lot of scripts. But acting isn't her only interest these days.

"I just love the journey of this life," she said. " I've got a lot to do. I don't know exactly what that means. But I've always kind of held true to one thing — I just want to be of service. If I can be a spokesperson and speak up for women, men and animals or use any power that I have to bring more awareness to something that needs a little boost or assistance in my lifetime — that is really my passion."

reply

It's funny she got an Oscar for what was a typical role. So dumb she won that over superior nominees.

reply

This perhaps best sums it up. In a round about way, wasn't Kim Basigner just playing herself in LA Confidential:
https://www.quora.com/When-did-Kim-Basinger-officially-stop-from-being-considered-an-A-list-movie-star

Even before LA Confidential, she was a beautiful and mostly solid actress but none of her starring roles made her a star beyond a ‘name.” (Marrying Man, My stepmother is an alien, Nadin, 9 1/2 weeks, etc etc …) she was fine in LA Confidential but really her role was to stand around aloof, not say a lot, look fragile and so stunningly beautiful like a bombshell backlit like a movie star of the 1940’s that men would do crazy things to own her or be near her … not exactly a crazy stretch … but that’s pretty much her everyday persona (see her on talk shows, a bundle of nerves and surprise, stunningly beautiful) so really, how many roles are there like that? And strangely, because she won an Oscar, she then couldn’t take on too many “small parts” anymore but she was just not a good enough actress to play a lot of other roles and on top, if you are that gorgeous, you’re not believable in a lot of roles anyway (like Michelle Pfeiffer as an “ugly” waitress and she can actually act). So, it is what it is … like it was an interesting throwback to see her in NICE GUYS as a DA in the 1970’s but to be perfectly honest, she was not very convincing …

If I were to guess, and without repeating what the Looper article said, I think the downfall of Kim Basinger's career was due to the following:
1. She has no franchise - Batman was the closest Kim had to a franchise to hang her hat when her other ventures failed to do well or completely flopped. Unfortunately, Kim wasn't invited back for what would become Batman Returns and by the time the third movie rolled around, Michael Keaton and Tim Burton were out of the door.

2. Her terrible PR machine - Kim has openly admitted that due to her struggles with social anxiety, she doesn't like to go out and promote her stuff or keep her face too visible in the public eye. The bottom-line is that if you aren't willing to do a lot of self-promotion then your chances of securing work and assessing new fans will start diminishing. It's a necessary evil because you want potential production companies or casting directors to come knocking at your door. Kim seems to be one of those actors, who feels that the work should speak for itself and she doesn't have to play the Hollywood BS game. Also, if you read some of Kim's old interviews, there are times in which she can come across and I say this with all due respect, flighty, entitled and unhinged:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnxUUdYn7h4&t

http://movieline.com/1991/01/01/kim-basinger-on-good-kissing-her-academy-awards-outburst-and-conversations-with-god/2/

http://movieline.com/1997/04/01/kim-confidential/

Kim also ruined her reputation to the general public with her antics such as spending $20 million on a small Georgia town (which she soon ran into bankruptcy), her and Alec Baldwin's unprofessional behavior on the set of The Marrying Man, hijacking Cool World from Ralph Bakshi so that she could make it more "kid friendly", and being successfully sued out of backing out of Boxing Helena. She also quite frankly, can in general personally rub people the wrong way due to her habitual aloofness, awkwardness, her high-profile marriage to Alec Baldwin, and dare I say, militant animal rights activism.

reply

Sigh

reply

3. Her terrible choice of films - Looking into Kim's filmography, only a handful of her movies have gotten a "fresh" (meaning positive) score on Rotten Tomatoes. She followed up Batman with crap like The Marrying Man, Final Analysis, Cool World, The Real McCoy, and The Getaway. And then she followed her Oscar winning role in LA Confidential with I Dreamed of Africa and Bless the Child, which pretty much killed her career as a top-tier star for good.

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/kim_basinger

4. Her limitations as a performer - Kim built her career off of being a gorgeous, sexy blonde woman who was also sensitive and somewhat childlike. She was perhaps in effect, a latter day Marilyn Monroe, who was also like a child-woman who was both innocent and full of sexuality. The problem is that Kim never spent time on stage to hone her craft, and she was never (despite appearing in comedies like Blind Date, My Stepmother is an Alien, and Wayne's World 2) really a comedic actress. And despite her success with LA Confidential, she could never really build upon that to truly prove herself once and for all as a heavy-duty serious actress. In essence, Kim Basinger is arguably one of those performers who isn't charismatic enough or doesn't have enough range (since her personality is naturally, so introverted and sincere) to truly carry an entire movie on her shoulders. In other words, Kim seems to function best when she's part of an ensemble (like in LA Confidential) or if she is the main female in the movie (like in Batman), she isn't the main engine driving the story.

5. Her look - In essence, it's somewhat hard to buy Kim in say, everywoman roles or decidedly grittier roles (like 8 Mile) because of her inherently prim, proper, glamorous appearance. And because Kim is so beautiful, it's naturally difficult to see her as a chameleon-like character actress or somebody who isn't from the "uptown".

reply

HEY...COOL WORLD IS BAD ASS....F@#K THAT BITCH FOR TRYING TO PLAY ALI'S ROLE IN GETAWAY HOWEVER.

reply

You see again, that's the thing about Kim Basinger. She's an actress who I feel more than often, doesn't chose her projects well. The producers actually wanted her for the Vicki Vale part all along but I guess she and her people were bluffing and stalling because they wanted assurance that the part was hers (or she was asking for too much money, I don't have all of the details right in front me me). But then Sean Young got hurt (the cover for Kim was that she was "busy" at the time) and in desperation, the producers went back to their first choice in Kim Basinger.

She did movies like Charlie St. Cloud and Fifty Shades Darker because her daughter suggested that she do them. She didn't want to do LA Confidential (the movie that earned her an Oscar) because she didn't want to leave said daughter (who may have been about a year and a half old at the time) and she didn't want to play another "sexy woman". Curtis Hanson, the director, who really wanted Kim for the part, had to thoroughly convince her to take it.

She turned down Meg Ryan's part in Sleepless in Seattle because she thought that the concept was ridiculous. Although, Kim herself claims that the script that she read didn't match what was in the finished product. She did The Marrying Man because it helped fulfill her dream of becoming a singer (this was roughly around the time that she did that Hollywood Affair album with Prince). And she did The Getaway with Alec Baldwin (keep in mind that in 1994, Kim could've starred in Speed instead of Sandra Bullock) even though it was getting quite obvious that people were collectively rooting for them to fail and the aforementioned Marrying Man (the movie where they infamously first got together) from three years prior was a major bomb.

She did that dumpster fire would be horror movie Bless the Child because...:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ku8Rzhc1JUw

It was also that same year that she thought that audiences would be interested in paying money to see her boring, overly earnest African vacation/travelogue.

https://lebeauleblog.com/2014/12/08/what-might-have-been-kim-basinger/

reply

I think another reason for Kim's career decline is that post-Batman and post-LA Confidential, she didn't work with a lot of great or quality filmmakers. In her career leading up to Batman, she worked with Robert Altman, Blake Edwards, Irvin Kershner (who of course, directed The Empire Strikes Back), Barry Levinson, Adrian Lyne, Robert Benton, and last but certainly not least, Tim Burton.

Post-Batman was bad for her because Kim was now officially looked at as an A-list, box office star and now had a reasonable amount of clout. Unfortunately, Kim was irresponsible to say the least and that explains her misbehavior while making The Marrying Man, meddling with Ralph Baskhi's vision on Cool World (in fairness, even without her influence, the producers were trying to change Baskshi's initial plans to something decidedly watered down).

She also in hindsight, made several errors in judgement with her film-selections such as turning down Sleeping with the Enemy (which wasn't a great movie by any means, but was a huge hit for Julia Roberts, post-Pretty Woman) to do The Marrying Man. She turned down Sleepless in Seattle to do The Real McCoy. And she turned down Speed (she was considered for the Sandra Bullock role) for The Getaway with her then real-life husband, Alec Baldwin. And of course, we all know about the Boxing Helena fiasco:
https://lebeauleblog.com/2014/12/08/what-might-have-been-kim-basinger/

Another thing to take note is that Kim simply put in the latter part of her career, started working for dare I say hacks like Russell Mulcahy, Chuck Russell, David E. Elllis, Peter Segal, and of course, E.L. James on Fifty Shades Darker (she didn't officially direct, but her stink is all over it), made movies which were inappropriate for her (like I Dreamed of Africa, Bless the Child, and Cellular), or movies where she was purely in it for the quick paycheck like The Sentinel, Charlie St. Cloud, and Fifty Shades Darker.

Maybe it's attributable to sexism.

Baldwin is at least as difficult to work with as Basinger (to use one example, Tim Burton, Basinger seemed to get on with Burton when they worked together on Batman as far as I'm aware, whereas I believe Baldwin was difficult on the set of Beetlejuice, even though he was only at a nascent part of his career). And yet, Baldwin, despite never having an Oscar, unlike his ex-wife, is the one still with a viable and thriving career.

reply

Alec Baldwin also infamously got kicked out of the Jack Ryan franchise after only one movie (The Hunt for Red October) for allegedly being difficult. They soon replaced him with Harrison Ford. Baldwin was also a gigantic asshole on this movie that he made with Anthony Hopkins called The Edge. Basically, the director was upset that Baldwin arrived on set with a full-beard. He wanted him to be clean-shaven at first and then grow the beard later. Naturally, when Baldwin was told this, he had a fit. Apparently, Baldwin was hyper-sensitive about his appearance because he had recently put on some weight.

The late Jan Maxwell left an off-Broadway play in 2006 because she couldn't deal with Alec Baldwin and his frightening temper tantrums.

To be fair, the way Alec Baldwin spoke to his daughter was frightful, but he didn't use any racist epithets or wish anyone was gang raped, the way Gibson did. Plus, he didn't drunkenly grab a female cop's breasts and refer to her as 'sugar tits' and then go on a rant about how Jews are responsible for all that is ill in the world. That said, he has used some hateful homophobic language in the recent past.

By the way, the 2008 Robert De Niro film 'What Just Happened' has Bruce Willis play himself as a notoriously difficult actor who refuses to shave his beard for a big Hollywood production. I'm pretty sure that this was a deliberate dig at Alec Baldwin and his shenanigans over The Edge.

Alec Baldwin strikes me as a guy with sociopathic tendencies. It wouldn't surprised me if he in part, pursued a woman with an already fragile mental and emotional state like Kim Basinger in order to control and emotionally abuse her. And I'm guessing that Kim was attracted to him because she has low self-esteem/self-worth and genuinely believed that Baldwin was capable of protecting her.

I hope you're wrong.

I'd hate to think that Basinger was abused by anyone, especially not her own husband.

The couple's divorce was granted in February, but they still haven't worked out the financial settlement. "She's worried about his stability," one "close friend" is quoted in the weekly. "She claims he hit her more than once." And according to American tabloid the Star, friends of the 48-year-old beauty claim Baldwin was shockingly violent to her during their union, leading to the injuries. Baldwin has always denied he was ever violent towards Basinger. A source says, "She claims he hit her more than once. And there were many instances when Alec was verbally abusive to her, even in public. She has extremely harsh feelings toward Alec. All the stress of being with him aggravated her back problems and led to the operation. The battles were no secret. Look how often Alec was caught on camera fighting with his wife in public. He put her through an emotional wringer for years. She's still suffering the after effects of their life together." Too many good roles in movies and television at this point to not give it to him.

He is also about to be dragged by some of the numerous women in his past.

Regularly beating up women pretty much of goes hand in hand with being a bully when you get right down to it. LG: You also met Ron Britton, whom you would marry, at that time. Was it love at first sight?
KB: I don’t really want to talk about that. That was just a friendship and it’s over and that’s that.
LG: That’s a pretty abrupt wrap on a seven-year marriage.
KB: He was a public figure in his own right, he was an artist, but we were basically friends and it segued into a marriage that it should never have been. It’s terrible to turn around and say you never knew someone, but you don’t. We never really had a marriage the way I know marriage, when two people really jointly love each other and they grow and they work and they care and they are everything. It was not my idea to do this.
LG: Did you find it too confining?
KB: I didn’t find it confining because I never lived like I was married. Not to say that I lived like I was unmarried and went out with other men, that was not the point.
LG: Did you feel like you were being let out of a cage after your divorce?
KB: Oh absolutely. The real me never existed inside that union. It was a sad situation. I’m not saying poor little me – that’s what happened. It was a choice and a bad choice.
LG: Are you friends with your ex-husband?
KB: No. I don’t know him at all. I never knew him.

According to Wikipedia, Ron Snyder, as he was then known, changed his name on Basinger's request to 'Britton' so she could have the same initials. He also quit his job during the marriage.

It sounds to me as if Basinger, and not 'Britton', may have been the controlling party in that relationship.

And I don't trust anything Jon Peters says. The man was found by a court to have sexually harassed his assistant during the production of Superman Returns. He is hardly an authority on this issue.

reply

I don't know the full details of Kim's first marriage (I am aware that Ron Snyder-Britton wrote a book about their relationship around the time that Kim won her Oscar) but I don't disagree with the notion or idea that Kim has in the past, shown displays of having a healthy ego/being self-centered. Generally, people like that have trouble expressing empathy, but that's an entirely different subject for another time. Kim is perhaps someone who may be calculating to a degree. I do find it ironic though that LA Confidential aside and being younger aside, Kim's career was much better when she was married to Snyder then it was when she was with Alec Baldwin.

As far as Jon Peters, I agree that Peters is himself a pretty shady (if you want to put it like that) character. But who am I to judge when he says that he saw Kim's then husband do stuff that he probably shouldn't have been doing? Is it because he isn't entirely specific and there needs to be additional context? Is it because we have to treat this like an isolated incident? It isn't like with Alec Baldwin, where there is a legitimate reason to suspect that he was abusive towards Kim.

reply

This is all speculation, and beneath us, but just based on everything I've read, it does seem to me that Basinger's first marriage, although clearly a mistake in Basinger's mind, was less toxic and most likely less abusive that her marriage to Baldwin. Still, Basinger and Baldwin did produce a, presumably much loved, child from their union.

reply

I often wonder how Kim's career would've panned out had she not met, fallen in love, and married Alec Baldwin and had a kid with him. Kim has always been seen as kind of a fearful and reclusive individual, and the whole fall out of that marriage just seemed to make her issues much worse.

https://lebeauleblog.com/2014/12/08/what-might-have-been-kim-basinger/

I also think that after she won her Oscar (in effect, what else is there for her to achieve as an actor) coupled with having her daughter, and the failure of her vanity project, I Dreamed of Africa, she really started to check out.

This is a blind item so we have to take this with a major grain of salt, but there is a rumor going around that Alec Baldwin would force his and Kim's then teenage daughter to parade around in bikinis and lingerie in front of visiting producers and directors:

I so hate 'blind items'. They're cowardly, mendacious BS.

Nosy-parkers and would-be do-gooders (not talking about you here TMC-4) should mind their business.

reply

Another thing regarding Jon Peters, it seems like as a movie-maker, he actually has good intentions but is really just an overzealous producer who has an active imagination. I don't know entirely what went on between him and Tim Burton on Batman, but it's kind of telling that Peters' influence (if any) decreased for Batman Returns, as Burton got a greater deal of creative control. You can argue, that Jon Peters is basically just another executive who doesn't understand comic books and their stories but is still virtually harmless in the grand scheme of things.

reply

Ron Snyder from what I gathered was a make-up artist who worked in the industry. He's about 15 years older than Kim and as you said, he quit his job to become Kim's full-time "caretaker". What I mean is he would always travel with Kim when she went to work and gave her reassurance due to her already suffering from anxiety issues.

According to Ron, Kim had an affair with Richard Gere when they were making the movie No Mercy. I don't know if that was the beginning of the end of their marriage, but I get the feeling that Kim for whatever the reasons, was starting to get bored. I think that he wrote in that book that Kim told him that he was approximately her 12th sexual partner in her life up until that point.

reply

Kevin Smith once told a story of how when he was writing Superman Lives Jon Peters would tell him behind the scenes stories about Batman, but would only refer to Kim Basinger as Vicki Vale, as if Smith wouldn't know who Basinger was otherwise. The conversation started something along the lines of:

"You know I dated Vicki Vale, right? Me, Jack Nicholson and Vicki Vale went to a Lakers game and..."

"You know Vicki Vale is a fictional character, right?"

reply

In general, it seems quite fair to say that Kim and Alec just brought out the worst in each other during their relationship. It was most apparent during that long and drawn out custody battle. People who sided with Alec accused Kim of using their kid as a pawn/weapon. This just served as a lesson to always (especially if you're in the entertainment industry) have a prenuptial agreement. This is also a lesson that you have to be extremely careful about who you chose to marry and have kids with.

reply

I agree.

I get the impression that they both have some jerkass traits (some of you might disagree but I see a similar dynamic with Johnny Depp and Amber Heard).

I just hope that Alec never physically, or, worse, sexually abused Kim. No-one, not even the biggest a-hole, deserves that.

reply

This is why I'm partially disappointed in Kim for taking part in junk like Fifty Shades Darker. Considering that she herself was in an abusive relationship (Kim in my estimation, might as well be a clear cut example of a sufferer of Battered Woman Syndrome) with a narcissistic, controlling man in Alec Baldwin, it's utterly ironic that she would associate herself with this tripe:

It's easy to come to the conclusion that Alec Baldwin was a horrible husband and Kim has seemingly have spent much of her life as a victim. The same sort of thing happened to Kelly LeBrock, who was married to Steven Seagal:
https://lebeauleblog.com/2015/05/15/what-the-hell-happened-to-kelly-lebrock/4/

reply

Maybe Basinger wasn't abused to the extent you seem to be suggesting.

reply

It's easy to sense or suspect that Kim got involved with the wrong people, toxic people like Alec Baldwin (and depending on your point of view, Prince) who were emotionally abusing her and unfortunately it was over a long period of time. Eventually, one snaps under the stress and verbal abuse. These types always bring the absolute worst out in us, and over time can bring out the worst in even the best of us. And that's when we start doing crazy things that are out of character for us.

reply

Kim strikes me (now that I think about it) as one of those women who may have serious daddy issues. This may explain her turbulent relationships with men. As I said prior, her first husband, Ron Snyder was about 15 years older than her. And her involvement with a violent narcissist like Alec Baldwin just tells me that she needed a domineering man controlling her.

Producer Art Linson’s excellent book What Just Happened? Bitter Hollywood Tales from the Front Line by Linson, Art(May 2, 2002) Hardcover: Amazon.com: Books (they made a movie based on it starring Robert De Niro) talks about how director Lee Tamahori cast Alec Baldwin in The Edge (1997), and how Baldwin showed up for work having grown a full beard.

Tamahori told him he had to shave it off, as the point was he’d grow it for later scenes when his character had been lost in the wilderness for weeks.

Baldwin threw a fit and refused to speak to Tamahori for the rest of the production, only taking his direction from Linson himself. When it was all over and Linson spoke to someone about it much later, they say Baldwin had been putting on a few pounds and had grown the beard to hide it around his face as he was self conscious of it.

The anecdote made it into the movie and the character was played by Bruce Willis.

I find it hilarious that Alec Baldwin of all people is calling another man (regardless of it being Donald Trump) the "devil" given his own personal baggage. It's the ultimate example of the "pot calling the kettle black".

reply

You're probably on to something regarding the sexism angle. I've heard the argument that if Alec Baldwin was a woman and acted the way he has acted in public, his career would've ended much, much sooner:
https://www.quora.com/If-an-actress-showed-many-public-displays-of-anger-had-gotten-physically-violent-with-photographers-and-was-heard-screaming-at-and-calling-her-young-child-names-like-Alec-Baldwin-would-her-career-be-over-much-faster

I'm guessing that Baldwin is partially able to get away with his bad behavior because his was still coming off the late career resurgence he had with 30 Rock, and he has friends (e.g. Lorne Michaels, Tina Fey) willing to speak on his behalf. I don't think that Kim Basinger has many allies in her corner or that much support within the industry (likely in part, due to her inherently shy nature), who are willing to go to bat for her.

reply

IMHO whose career ends or doesn't is more complicated than sexism: What really turns off is if a celebrity does something that shows their image is a crock of... lies.

Meg Ryan's career ended when she publically cheated on her husband, while around the same Angelina Jolie changed out husbands every few years with no damage to her career. And that's because Ryan was seen as the "good girl" and "America's Sweetheart", and not the sort of gal who'd cheat on her husband even if he was a rat bastard, while Jolie was seen as the wild girl who'd do just about anything. Jolie lived up to her image, and Ryan showed that she wasn't actually America's Sweetheart, so Ryan's career imploded while Jolie's was unharmed.

So Baldwin had been played enough bad boys and jerks that when he had public tantrums it wasn't a massive shock, but if someone like Chris Evans had done the same thing he'd be through. I mean think of it - Chris Evans plays Captain America and helps ladies up the steps at awards ceremonies, if he went around beating up paparazzi and screaming abuse at his kids, he'd be over in a New York minute.

reply

The ironic thing is that Kim (despite her reputation as a glamorous "sex symbol") was also relatively wholesome herself. She was the rare woman who could both plausibly be sexy and innocent at the same time. Kim was kind of like to movies what Elizabeth Hulette (Miss Elizabeth) was to professional wrestling. Like Kim, Elizabeth seen as this beautiful, kind, classy, demure, gentle and soft-spoken southern woman, who exuded a vulnerability and insecurity that just added to her beauty. They were the type of women who aspired you to want to protect them and you would genuinely get angry and upset when somebody (like Jack Nicholson's Joker or Jake "The Snake" Roberts when he infamously smacked Elizabeth) wanted to do serious harm to them.

http://kimbasingertribute.tripod.com/moviesalbum.html

Kim's decidedly ego-centric behavior like literally buying a town, her unprofessional antics on movie sets like The Marrying Man, casually talking about learning how to perform oral sex while as a teenager back in Georgia in Vogue magazine, hooking up with a boorish thug like Alec Baldwin, and the whole Boxing Helena debacle, was what started to soil that sweet, delicate image that people had of her.

reply

I always thought Kim Basinger's image was more as the classic sex symbol, the Marilyn Monroe type even, but slightly more self-aware, rather than the wholesome girl-next-door (not that Basinger has ever come across as crude or cheap on film, save for perhaps Wayne's World 2, where she was deliberately playing a comic seductress/horny housewife). During the 80s she was mostly known for films like 9 1/2 Weeks and The Natural, the former of which was borderline porn, or at least erotica, and the latter of which she played a selfish femme fatale type. Batman solidified her name as a movie star, and admittedly she was more wholesome in that one, although the film and character still traded on her sex appeal.

reply

Another thing to take note is that Kim Basigner was never really a box office draw. Her most successful movies financially and/or critically such as Batman or LA Confidential, were ones that didn't exactly rely heavily on her star power or her face and name. When Kim was given the task to carry a movie primarily on her name (such as Nadine, My Stepmother is an Alien, Final Analysis, Cool World, The Real McCoy, The Getaway, I Dreamed of Africa, and Bless the Child), they outright bombed at the box office. Even 9 1/2 Weeks, which is arguably Kim's most noteworthy movie after Batman and LA Confidential, was technically a box office bomb.

Blind Date, a movie that she did with Bruce Willis two years before Batman, is probably the only movie of her's in which she was the "star" that was technically a "hit". And even that movie was a base-level hit (meaning it made a profit, but wasn't a run away success) and is pretty much now seen as "that movie that Bruce Willis did right before Die Hard". Stuff like 8 Mile came out long past Kim's peak years/relevancy.

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BoxOfficeBomb

reply

9 1/2 Weeks was a hit in Europe, but flopped in the US.

Never Say Never Again and The Natural were moderate hits, but weren't really sold on Basinger's name.

reply

You can argue that in movies like Blind Date, My Stepmother is An Alien, Cool World, and Wayne's World 2, Kim is more or less, playing a manic pixie dream girl type (even though they still try to play on her sex symbol status). A MPDG is essentially, a quirky, free-spirited woman who is really only there to teach the otherwise aimless, downcast, or depressed male protagonist how to embrace life, fun and happiness.

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ManicPixieDreamGirl

Bless the Child, one of the first movies that she did after she one her Oscar was perhaps one of the few Kim Basinger movies that didn't at all, try to play on her sex appeal (even Batman did that with her introductory seen, with the shot of her pantyhose-clad legs on the desk), but that movie was regardless, a piece of elephant dung.

https://www.gq.com/story/the-curious-career-of-kim-basinger

reply

I want to believe that Kim Basinger, when she's motivated, is paired with a director who knows how to play to her strengths (e.g. Adrian Lyne, Curtis Hanson, Robert Altman) and won't leave her to her own devices, and she's cast and written as characters within her range, she could put on at the very least, a passable performance. Even in Batman, she's not as bad (it seems critics like to hold against her that she screamed a lot) or cringe-inducing as some may make her out to be.

Vicki Vale I believe, was an clear cut example of a decidedly wholesome and innocent character (especially when compared to other women in Tim Burton's Batman movies like Selina Kyle, Alicia, the Ice Princess, and the Poodle Lady) that she played. Not to sound corny, but I assume that she was meant to be the "light" (ever noticed that in the climax, Vicki is wearing all white to presumably further hammer her angelic nature) to counterbalance the darkness in Bruce Wayne's life.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNA33grsfbk#t=07m19s

reply

If someone was thinking that a war correspondent should be the character who represents the wholesomeness and innocence in the world, then someone wasn't thinking things through. War correspondents aren't innocent, they've seen all the suffering in the world!

What she should have represented was a SANE way of dealing with all the darkness and suffering in the world, someone that Bruce Wayne really needed to spend time with, but neither Burton nor Basinger thought that through. No, the just wanted to give him a wholesome and innocent girlfriend who wore white, and they gave her this supposedly glamorous job to make her more of a trophy girlfriend. They never thought about what that job would actually do to someone's personality.

reply

Perhaps TMC-4 means 'innocent' in terms of being a good person and incorruptible, rather than 'innocent' as in 'naïve' and 'unworldly'.

One can be a good person despite having witnessed the horrors of the world, whilst conversely one can be a spoiled self-absorbed brat precisely because one hasn't been exposed to life's hardships.

reply

Good point TMC-4.

Selina Kyle was a neurotic good girl who went bad, Alicia was a gold-digging femme fatale, the Ice Princess was a shallow bimbo, and the Poodle Lady was a villain. So, of all of them, Vicki Vale was arguably the closest the Burton films had to a true 'Good Girl' character.

As far as the whole Burton-Schumacher franchise goes, I think Julie Madison and maybe Nora Fries (although she is, unfortunately, a literal woman in the refrigerator) are the closest in that respect to Vicki Vale, in terms of being relatively 'normal' and sympathetic female characters (Batgirl is sympathetic but she's still a crime-fighting vigilante, so hardly normal, and Dr. Chase Meridian was on the kinky side).

Since you mentioned Chris Evans, Tobey Maguire's career pretty much went up in flames for being a jerk and flat out sociopath. Maguire like Evans with Captain America (and previously, the Human Torch), also of course, played a Marvel superhero in Spider-Man. Maguire, despite looking like the baby-faced boy next door, has numerous stories about him being rude to fans (even during his Spider-Man popularity) and treating women like shit (just Google Molly Bloom).

I'd love to see that!

I think playing Captain America has got to his head. Prior to the MCU he never came across as such a sanctimonious goody-goody bore (lecturing black men, or, as I like to call it, 'whitesplaining', about slavery etcetera). He was appearing as a frat-boy jackass in films like the 00s Fantastic Four series, The Perfect Score, and Not Another Teen Movie.

Then again, screaming abuse at his kids didn't seem to do Brad Pitt's angelic image any damage; neither did cheating on Jennifer Aniston with Angelina Jolie. Some pretty boys have a Teflon reputation.

reply

I wonder if maybe joining the MCU could help boost Kim's career. It's interesting that past Batman alumni like Michael Keaton and Michelle Pfeffier have recently joined in. I don't know what would be an ideal part for Kim Basinger but I sort of think that during her prime, had there been an MCU Fantastic Four movie, she could've played Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman. If you look at the way that Sue looked on the '90s animated series, she does kind of resemble Kim Basinger.

I'd like to see Kim Basinger in the MCU too, but I wasn't impressed with the way they used Michelle Pfeiffer. She was supposed to be playing Janet Van Dyne/the original Wasp, but she was barely in the film, they gave her a terrible grey fright wig, and personality and background-wise the character was nothing like Janet Van Dyne from the comics (which is a major wasted opportunity because Pfeiffer would have been perfect for that incarnation of the character).

I have higher hopes for Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrith in the Maleficent sequel. I wonder if Basinger could also be incorporated into one of these Disney live-action remakes. What role could she play? Another queen or a deceptively beautiful witch?

reply

It's kind of interesting that the MCU has as of late, been sort of a refuge of sorts for aging actresses: Glenn Close was in Guardians of the Galaxy, Michelle Pfeiffer as I had previously said, was in Ant Man and the Wasp, Rene Russo was in Thor, and more recently, Annette Benning was in Captain Marvel.

Since we're on the subject of Meg Ryan:

https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/7750-future-of-movie-stars-who-will-shine-who-will-fade-away/?do=findComment&comment=4137469

Ryan's career took a dive for a couple of reasons. The affair rumours didn't help. Most of the roles she was known for were not becoming popular anymore. Romcoms were going downward and she was aging out. She actively decided to take a 3 year hiatus in the aughts after Kate and Leopold which would have killed any momentum of trying to find some other niches or options. Her look was also very associated with the 90s and the 80s and most probably didn't think she had the range to do more grittier roles. I liked most of her romantic roles, but very few of them showed much range. In recent years, she's had a lot of work done on her face (fillers and botox mainly I think) and she does not look like her old self at all.

I'm guessing that in Kim's case, she's one of those people in Hollywood who is nice when things are going her way, but can none the less, be difficult to work with otherwise. Kim was once described as "having more neuroses than an inbred poodle" and "something of a fruitcake with weird phobias".

She's the type of person who may take herself too seriously and refuses to play the game. In other words, whenever she gets the opportunity to promote herself (by making public appearances and doing interviews) and the work she's a part of, she refuses (or does it very reluctantly).

I remember Bob Ringwood, who was the costume designer for Batman on Facebook out and out saying that Kim was a horrible woman. He added that during his 40+ year career hadn't seen such disgraceful and outright bad behavior from an actor. Ringwood didn't exactly elaborate on Kim's behavior during the production of Batman, but part of me immediately believed that it was sour grapes. You see, Kim Basinger used her own costume designer, Linda Henrikson, who had previously worked with her on My Stepmother is an Alien and later again on The Marrying Man.

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0377621/

reply

I also suspect it was probably sour grapes on Bob Ringwood's part.

reply

In fairness to Bob Ringwood, I'm not suggesting or implying that he's lying (because of course, I wasn't there) or what he said about Kim Basinger doesn't have a sliver of truth. I mean, Ms. Basinger already proved that she could be an asshole diva on film sets (as I had addressed numerous times before), so even without Ringwood's insight, I already had an inkling that she was somebody who could be a challenge to deal with.

Irvin Kerhsner, who directed Kim in Never Say Never Again said point blank that she has the same problem that a lot of ex-models turned actresses have, they pay too much attention to their looks. This perhaps goes back to an earlier point that I made, in which Kim's career ultimately faltered I believe, because she never truly honed her craft as an actress. When Kim outgrew or aged out her "sexy woman/blonde bombshell image", she had little else to fall back on or bring to the table. I think that Kim treats acting like a standard 9 to 5 job (where she shows up to work, does her job in her words "between acting and cut", and then goes home) and doesn't really know how to navigate and finesse herself in and around the business.

https://www.quora.com/Did-Irvin-Kershner-the-director-of-The-Empire-Strikes-Back-Never-Say-Never-Again-and-RoboCop-2-have-a-point-when-he-said-that-a-lot-of-ex-models-turned-actresses-like-Kim-Basinger-pay-too-much-attention-to-their-looks

reply

For someone who is washed up, there sure is a lot of replies here. She just needs the right role or try the small screen. Many older actresses have been able to resurrect their careers.

reply

The sad thing about Kim Basinger is that LA Confidential, theoretically should've resurrected her career on the long term. Before that, Kim had been in a lot of box office flops (post-Batman) and was dealing with legal and financial problems. She of course, won an Oscar and got the best reviews of her career (before or since). What should have followed was a late career resurgence or renaissance. Instead, Kim for all intent and purposes, had little else to go after that (her Oscar win sort of became anti-climatic). She was already in her 40s at that point and was about to go into more personal issues regarding her crumbling marriage and her obligations as a mother to a young child. Plus, the movies that Kim starred in post-LA Confidential (with perhaps, 8 Mile as an exception) were nothing to write home about.

Kim is now 65 years old, and many people assume that she is essentially retired (even though she has worked steadily in the 20 years since LA Confidential, it's in stuff that most people haven't heard of or cared much about). I'm not sure if Kim herself is all that willing to try to mount a full-fledged comeback given her age, her personal baggage, her virtual helicopter parenting of the daughter that she has with Alec Baldwin, and her devotion to animal rights activism. You would think that Kim given her Oscar pedigree would now at the very least, be seen as sort of an "elder stateswoman" type of actress (a la Susan Sarandon, Glenn Close, Meryl Streep, Jessica Lange, Helen Mirren, Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, etc.).

It seems like instead of playing more age appropriate roles (one of the points in that Looper article is that Kim is getting tired of being offered wife and mom roles), she decides to go on another prolonged hiatus. Kim recently did this movie called The 11th Hour, where she plays a woman who desperately tries to get pregnant even though Kim was already well into her 60s when that movie was made.

Michael Keaton was able to get his career back on track (after he too was a "What the hell happened to you?" subject) with Birdman and later Spotlight and Spider-Man: Homecoming, but of course he's a man. I wonder why Tim Burton hasn't worked with Kim Basinger again since Batman, given that he'll often work with the same actors?

Does anyone really take those "Why Hollywood won't cast...." things seriously?

I do think that it's a fair enough assessment. People do legitimately wonder what happened to Kim Basinger's acting career and why she doesn't make as many movies (high profile or otherwise) these days, much less get too many starring roles anymore. I mean, she has an Oscar to her name and despite now technically being a senior citizen, she's still a very beautiful lady. We're approaching the 30th anniversary of the release of Batman and it's still the biggest (at least commercially) movie of her career. It was the movie that officially solidified her as an A-lister, and yet with the exception of the acclaim that she got for LA Confidential, her career somehow slowly started to go off track. Most of Kim Basinger's fans certainly don't want Fifty Shades Darker to be the last movie she ever appears in.

10 Actors Who Suffered The Most After Winning An Oscar

http://whatculture.com/film/10-actors-who-suffered-the-most-after-winning-an-oscar?page=7

LA Confidential is full of great performances - it is, after all, the film that basically gave us Russell Crowe - but Kim Basinger's Lynn Bracken was the real stand-out. Which is why she won an Oscar for it and which is why we should have then got a period of her rising to become one of the most prominent leading ladies in Hollywood.

Remember that? Well, no, you wouldn't, because it didn't happen. Instead, Basinger went on holiday from film-making for three years, letting everyone forget about the goodwill she'd built with the win and then making I Dreamed Of Africa. A truly awful, dull film. She's not awful in it, but the film is woefully bad.

After the break and then the pretty appalling comeback, it's testament to how her profile changed that her biggest roles have probably been in two Fifty Shades sequels. And they're unwatchable. She just let relevance slip out of her grip.

reply

Wut?

IMDB shows that she has been in a movie every year or two throughout the 2000s. Not all have done great business, but she's far from 'not being cast anymore'. The last major movie she was in was just three years ago... The Nice Guys, as well as the Fifty Shades movies.

Not too bad for 'downright forgettable' and an actress who is well into her sixties...

I've always thought the opposite... that she's one of the few actresses who doesn't appear to have submitted to major cosmetic surgery, but has gracefully aged and managed to stay relatively active in movies.

The point of the article is that Kim Basigner hardly if ever gets lead roles anymore, is that visible to the public eye, or works as frequently as she did in her prime (which was up until 1994, which was before she went on her three year hiatus and had her kid with Alec Baldwin).

The last role that she had in which she was undisputedly the "star" was a little Danish movie called The 11th Hour/I Am Here, from about 4-5 years ago. The last major, mainstream, widely released role in which she was the star or female lead was arguably, Cellular, from 2004 (15 years ago). Sure Kim has appeared in major movies as you mentioned, but they might as well have been glorified cameos.

Plus, I don't think that appearing in the Fifty Shades movies is something to hang your hat on. Just because Kim has still worked the the years since she won her Oscar (meaning that she didn't officially or out and out "retire") doesn't mean that there's exactly a buzz surrounding her anymore.

To which I reply... so what?

Using a highly scientific methodology, I came across this reputable list from IMDB, of actresses in their 60s.

https://www.imdb.com/list/ls051454291/

Clicking on three actresses at random -- Sally Field, Jessica Lange, Sissy Spacek -- produces similar findings. None have headlined movies in years, none have been in as many movies in ANY capacity as Basinger since 2000... these three at least seem to be doing more television work than movies these days.

I'm not defending Basinger so much as pointing out the pointlessness of click-bait-y articles like the one referenced in your original post... and the vapidity of people who give them any weight whatsoever.

Go outside, get some fresh air and let poor Ms. Basinger get over your disapproval of her failed career.

Me... I'm moving on... I feel myself shedding IQ points just by being in this thread...

Kim Basinger – The Curse

Desperate to break away from the bombshell roles, Basinger chose projects that put her talents as a serious actor front and centre. This proved disastrous, starting a string of duds like Bless This Child and I Dreamed of Africa. Her last high-profile role was in Fifty Shades Darker and I think we can all agree that no-one deserves that.

It’s difficult to know whether Kim Basinger’s rather sporadic film appearances over the last few year are more to do with choice or simply because not that many people have roles for her. She was last seen in 2010’s Charlie St. Cloud, but has now signed up for a part in Crash writer/director Paul Haggis’ new drama, Third Person.

You can't just use the broad generalization for just about any aging actress, because not everybody has the same career path.

Well said.

The creep factor is strong in these multiple threads posted about thumbing a nose at an actress.

Why do people care? Because it makes them feel better about themselves.

I give no favour to Bassigner. I thought she was ok in LA Confidential but the award was just absurd IMO.

Dammed if I can think of a good reason to make a federal case for defining her general unworthiness.

reply

I do wonder if Kim herself is actually fully aware that her career as a major film star is over. Bless the Child and I Dreamed of Africa from almost 20 years ago were really the last major studio projects that were solely built on her name. It kind of explains why she has been doubling down so much on her animal rights activism. To her, that is her REAL JOB and she takes acting gigs (even if she should know better like taking part in Fifty Shades Darker) when she really needs the money. And like I said, she can't really reinvent herself as a character actress and her reputation in regards to her reliability and overall professionalism on set has always been decidedly shaky.

https://www.quora.com/Why-has-Kim-Basinger-been-blacklisted-by-Hollywood/answer/Jon-Mixon-1

She hasn't been.

She simply stopped making a great deal of money for films back in the 1990s, and that diminished her appeal as a performer. There's not much point in casting performers if their presence in your project isn't going attract much attention at the box office.

There's also the fact that Basinger isn't a particularly strong actor. She's not a Shakespearean, she doesn't do comedy very well, she's limited in her dramatic range, and at 66, her “sex kitten “ days are decades behind her. Basically there aren't many roles where she would “fit", and the competition for those few is quite fierce.

Finally, Basinger has a number of mental health issues which have plagued her since at least the 1990s. While she seems to have gotten them under control, they manifested themselves during what was height of her career, which was frankly disastrous for her. She's never been able to recover from that professional setback, and that's why she's rarely seen these days.

Kim Basinger hasn't been “blacklisted”.

She is an older actor, with a limited range, who wasn't making money for film productions. She just wasn't appealing to cast any longer.

reply

I think that in Kim's case, she also may have had the issue of now being an actress who was "too old to be hot, but too hot to be old" if that makes sense. Michelle Pfeiffer (AKA Selina Kyle) you can say also had that problem once she reached a certain age.

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/pzfg15/comment/hf0ru5s/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

That stigma may have also hurt Kim from being able to evolve and transition into being an "elder stateswoman" actress like I previously mentioned. Kim also like Michelle appeared to deliberately cut down on her work (or become much more picky/selective) to focus on being a mom, which wasn't great from the standpoint of keeping her name relevant or fresh in the public's consciousness.
