A while back I read a piece saying how the three main Batman Returns villains each represent a different aspect of Batman and/or Bruce Wayne;

Catwoman - the masked adventurer forged by personal violence
Shreck - the billionaire with secrets
Penguin - the orphan and 'freak'.
