BTTF Part IV in 2015?

few years ago I was 88% CERTAIN theyd do a part 4 for 2015 (as its such an important year in the BTTF mythos and all the actors are the correct age for 1985) with Marty Jnr (played by some young guy), with CLloyd, MJF (cameo), and a returning Crispin Glover, as well as Lea Thompson, Thomas F. Wilson, Elisabeth Shue, Mary Steenburgen, James Tolkan, Marc McClure, hell even Billy Zane! Directed by Zemekics again like Spielberg doing Indy 4 (not necessarily kicking off a new trilogy but there could be - maybe filmed back to back like LOTR or BTTF2/3). Itd be a return to the crazy alternate reality stuff of BTTF2 (which is very much in vogue now - Star Trek09, XM:DOFP, TGEN) involving Marty Jnr finding something the Doc left behind (maybe a prototype time machine he made before the Delorean - a fridge perhaps?) and accidently going back from 'our' non hoverboard 2015 (easily explained via alternate realities/timelines) to 1985 and interacting with Marty & Co (like BTTF2 had Marty interacting with BTTF1 scenes. And like Part 1 showed 80s audiences the 50s, Part 4 would show todays audiences the 80s) and maybe a few other periods (1955 again, hoverboard 2015) screwing around with everything resulting in the trilogy being under threat of being 'erased' and all the cataclysmic consequences that would bring about. Therd be a CG 1985 Marty/MJF for a very brief cameo scene, but Martys parents, Biff, Doc etc were supposed to be 30 years older in the 1985 parts of BTTF1 so no need for make up now, and they could bring in a young lookalike actress for 85 Jennifer no problem as she's already been recast (and if they all appear in 2015 theyd have to be aged up of course like they were in BTTF2 - except MJF/Shue)

now 2015 has been and gone and no Part 4 which is strange considering BTTF is more popular than ever (especially Part 2) and the anniversaries. And especially when everything is getting remade or sequels or prequels now (in the case of time travel stuff its all 3). BTTF is one of the few franchises untouched (despite it being one that would make more sense to continue than others). I guess maybe it could happen in 2020 as they'll need to create new instalments to maintain the franchise just like other 80s series like SW, Indy, Ghostbusters etc (although unlike GB, BTTF would have to be a continuation of the originals in some form as like Star Wars/Trek etc its too popular to simply 'throw out' the originals and remake)

No, no, no, and no... The BTTF trilogy does not need any more sequels, prequels, remakes, or reboots. Hollywood should leave it alone... FOREVER. It is perfect as-is.

People should be demanding that Hollywood come up with more original ideas instead of sh!tting the bed with countless horrible sequels/reboots that ruin a franchise.

Movie idea: Another back to the future movie that is actually set in the year 2015 but the twist of the movie is that Doc and Marty actually arrive in 2015 but the town that they arrive in is a town sized theme park based on the movie, back to the future 2. (self.movies)

The Back to the Future universe is one of the few good projects I would be okay with rebooting, and doing it on considerably different and darker terms. Here's my concept:

We discover that the original BTTF films were drastically censored adaptations of a memoir discovered by Robert Zemeckis (this part of the story is similar to the concept of Wes Craven's New Nightmare, in bringing the filmmaker into the story). He wanted to show the stories in an upbeat way, but instead we are taken into the "true" story...

The "real" Marty, let's say "Marty McFadden" - a realistic-ish 1980s teenager who calls to mind iconic John Hughes characters rather than being light-heartedly whacky like Michael J. Fox, is indeed sent back to 1955, but it's a realistic 1955. People don't act goofy and aren't constantly reminding you what year it is.

Anyway, he changes history, but instead of that ridiculous thing with the fading photo, it just means the future he returns to is different. Maybe his parents still got married, but the events were somewhat different, so they never had him - they had different kids, and don't know who he is.

So he goes back in time to stop himself from causing the changes, but that just introduces more changes. And he goes through these increasingly desperate cycles of trying to restore a situation that is now completely gone. He is a stranger, alone in time, who has erased himself from history, and after countless back-and-forth cycles trying to rediscover his life he is middle-aged from living the same few years over and over.

Finally, at some point in the '90s, he powers down the time machine, removes and destroys some critical components, and goes to a bar. He looks around and realizes with shock that everyone in the bar...and everyone on the street too...are his children or grandchildren from one cycle or another.
He smiles and drinks his beer.

sounds like a creepy realistic take on BTTF - like Primer, Predestination etc

they go back in time stop Bush from becoming president in 2000. Gore is inaugurated.

*We don't have manufactured war in Iraq, we don't have 9/11 or great recession and war on terror
*We can still travel on airplanes relatively freely.
*Lots more of the world gets along with us

I really believe we are actually living out back to the future. THIS is why a fourth version was not made!!

.....oh and we don't have a pandemic bc Trump did not run to 'avenge' Obama having been president....since Obama did not run to correct Bush who was never president.

Or not

reply

No.

I believe the two Bobs stated in multiple interviews that they're not going to touch "BttF", whether it's making a fourth installment, or keeping studios from remaking/rebooting the trilogy.

Originally, "Bttf" was only supposed to be a standalone film. After the studio pretty much convinced Zemeckis and Gale to make sequels, they agreed to do it.

I do not want to see a Part IV without Michael J. Fox. He's the only true Marty McFly. I would hate for them to recast the role because of his Parkinson's.

It may have worked with Jennifer, but not Marty.

reply

I don't want to see this project w out Michael either. He's the reason why people went to the movies. they recast the first one for him. Originally it was supposed to be Eric Stoltz...blech. It would have tanked with Eric.

reply

Or maybe Marty would've gone missing (like Luke in TFA, Deckard in BR2049) and his son has to try find him throughout different timelines etc

reply

The Video Game on X-Box 360 is a sequel to the movies. And it's really good. You end up getting to know more about Marty's family's past and also why Biff is such a mean jerk. I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't played it.

reply

outside the hardcore fanbase no one really tunes into all the video games and comic books. they really need to do a 4th film to rejuvenate the franchise and get kids watching the originals/buying the blu sets or stream whatever happens now etc. a BTTF4 would make $1b easy and it wouldn't really be a cash in as theres tonnes of awesome stories they could do centring around alternate realities/timelines .and they could involve MJF in it in a bunch of ways (from old man Marty which could explain his condition, or CGI 1985 Marty or middle age Marty etc) all the other actors like Lea Thompson etc would be about the right age now for 1985 scenes so no need for make ups (Lloyd was always playing Doc as much older anyway) and imagine the FX they could do now with it.

reply

That's just your opinion. I think that game is better than anything we could get now. I don't want a sequel cause Michael J. Fox is not in shape to do any movie or TV show and even if he was it's too late. If they did a sequel it'd be like the new Star Wars sequels where the original characters don't get as much screentime and some new character that fans of the original won't like get all the screentime.

reply

Too right emmer!

reply

Maybe with the covid getting hollywood scrabbling around looking for bankable projects to greenlight will loosen 'the Bobs' stance on there being 'no sequels assholes!' and we'll hear that BTTF Part IV is happening..

I mean whod have ever thought wed get a Ghostbusters 3 (with Bill Murray) or Star Wars VII (with Harrison Ford).. or even Indy 4 (for decades Spielberg was like meh just leave it as a trilogy)

reply

Ok maybe not

reply

I would not want them recasting Marty either--Fox made it...he managed to do this while doing family ties too. This is his. It's possible they could try something like they did with Val Kilmer for top gun 2 (and voice Technlogies) but Kilmer was a supporting actor/co-star and Fox would be the lead role. Not sure what would be available vs what would be needed.

reply

a BTTF 4 could easily get to TG2 box office as BTTF is still a huge deal now. (just the other day noticed BTTF cereal and a shower gel set in my local supermarket!)

MJF could be like the missing legacy character a'la Luke in TFA and Deckard in BR2, therefore the whole plot centered around him but not necessary much screen time beyond a CGI assisted scene

wonder what this means?
