This is one of my favorite movies. I have it on DVD and VHS. I watch it every year around Christmas time. I set up some quiet time to myself and just watch it. It's really a lovely movie and I think It's Ricki Lake's best work. Did you know it is based on a German movie, Sugar Baby?

reply

Angela- yes i agree. there is hope for all us non-skinny girls. thank god for actresses like ricki lake. when she was bigger she actually got to make out with some pretty hot guys ifyou check out her filmography. she rocks.
and so does the movie. its so great.

reply

well we bigger chicks need more bigger role models. women happy with the way they are and not starving themselves so they look sick.

I saw this movie on TV not long ago. I thought it would be cheesy but it was frigging awesome! Craig Sheffer usually plays really smarmy characters so it was great to see him play this role. Ricki Lake did a great job going after the man she wanted and she got him in the end! Love this movie!

I have to say that I do love this movie! I saw it for the first time back in 1990 when I was 8. I love the whole story! Even though she does not look like a model, Grace still prusues the man of her dreams and does not let his good looks or her weight intimidate her. In the end she succeeds! This is a very encouraging story for any person (male or female) that has never felt like they were good enough for someone. This movie shows people that when you like someone, do not be afraid to go for it!

reply

I just got the dvd from a friend (i was going to buy it myself but it was an early birthday present).
I have to agree that it is a very encouraging story. The only opinion that matters is your own.

It's a shame we don't get more people here to discuss this movie. :(

I thought it was great!

am i the only person who hated this film?? i mean, this guy had a girlfriend. grace should have known it was a no-go area in the first place. then we're meant to feel sorry for her when rob's girlfriend catches her boyfriend with the girl he's cheating on her with (if that makes sense!)...she's only doing what would be natural to any of us! then i start hating rob cos he promptly ditches grace to go back to his girlfriend...then grace just takes him back without question. grrr it annoyed me so much. the only one i felt sorry for was the girlfriend. she didn't do anything to deserve all that. i'm mad now.

reply

Well, the girlfriend was a complete snob. All she ever did was try to make Rob into something that he's not.

I do agree with you on one point. I hated the scene in the club, Rob could have done something more to help Grace. Instead, she is humiliated while he stands there. It was only after she was on the floor, did he grab his girlfriend. And it always bothered me that he didn't just leave her, but I guess he felt obligated/confused because they were engaged.

Thanks for posting! I hope more people come along, I love talking about this movie!

I saw this movie recently, and the original German flick when I was 11. Very nice, both depressing, and totally unrealistic. Being 5'9" and have extra lbs. myself, I can DEFINITELY tell you the only looks I get from men are THE WRONG KINDS! None of the remotely nice-looking men look at me, all the unsavory or pathetic characters try to talk to me, even say filthy things in my direction (not all in English). I dress conservatively to conceal my figure and bust with dark clothes, big sweaters, men's jackets, and dark jeans but nothing helps. I even had to quit a job (that I really needed) since I was getting harassed a lot by the disgusting stockboys. When you're my size, they assume you're a slut b/c you're big, lonely, and desperate. And so many plus size girls (genuinely nice people) end up settling for these uncouth types and taking much abuse. They don't deserve it.

I'm 24, have yet to be asked the time from a man, in univ. and on my own! Should Mr. Right bump into me, that's cool but I prefer solitude over chaos.

i loved this movie...but i agree with the whole cheating thing...that was the only thing i didn't like..he shouldn't have cheated!!

reply

Yes, I LOVE this movie!!! =) Definitely one of those movies that will put you in a good mood even when you are feeling totally blue. There are only a handful of very select movies that can make me feel that way, and Babycakes is up there in the top 5, for sure!

This is the most heartwarming movie for people that battle with their weight. I loved this movie. It gives one a glimmer of hope that love is more than skin deep. I think that this is one of Ricki Lake's best movies.

reply

When I first saw it in the early '90s, I was tiny but it still warmed my heart. Now that I'm not so tiny ((LoL)) I love it even more.

reply

LMAO yea when i first saw it i was a skinny chick lol not so much anymore lol so yea it gives us not so skinny chicks hope.

I wouldn't go as far as calling it a fave but it was good. I'm surprised Ricki never became a more succesful actress after movies like this and "Hairspray". I mean, "MIss Winterborne" sucked out loud (and they had to make her preganant?...come on!).

The thing about "Babycakes" was it had this really funny soundtrack but I only really remember two songs. One was "Big Girls Don't Cry" and then this one song called "Babycakes",which was semi preevy! It was a good light comedy and while I'm glad it's on DVD, the price is kind of high. $25.00?

reply

I didn't love it, but I liked it. I think it was very refreshing on a lot of levels. First of all, fat women are almost never the lead in movies at all, let alone in love stories. If they are, they are usually thin women in fat suits and normally lose the weight near the end. Secondly, there are dozens of movies in which a fat or otherwise unattractive man wins over the beautiful, thin dream girl by being smart, funny, sweet, and persistent. Then again, there are even more instances in which an average, homely, or old-as dirt guy is with some looker, and they don't even bother with supplying a justification of any kind. Last but not least, the film did actually acknowledge the fact that Grace/Ricki is in fact very pretty, and part of how she was received was in how she presented herself. Grace seemed compelled to apolgize for being fat and assume she was unlovable because of it, but after she started wearing more attention-grabbing clothes, she started getting positive comments on her looks and people in general started paying more attention to her. That, I think, ought to be the moral of the story.

reply

I loved this movie. When it first came out i wrote a letter to Ricki Lake thanking her for giving me hope as a high school fattie. I was in love with my best friend Bill and he didnt return the affections, so I wrote to Ricki. A few months later when I had moved on to college, my roommate came to get me from my friends room telling me that Ricki Lake was on the phone. I didnt believe her. I went in and sure enough it was her. I was so happy. We talked for a couple hours and she is a REALLY nice woman. She has been an inspiration for me for years. This movie helped me in many ways, and Ricki's caring for the pain of one fan touched my heart.

reply

i have loved this movie sents it came out i been watching it and as for ricki being a caring person ive never talked to her but even in her show she was never a mean person shes always shown a caring side

When Someone Gives You Love Try Not To *beep* On It!

reply

Well, so what did Ricki Lake tell you? By the way, most of the girls I've known who were real guy magnets were not actually conventially good-looking prom queen types; a lot of them were plain, kinda big, or even borderline-homely. They were just more very comfortable talking to guys is all, though some of them gave the impression of bieng kinda slutty, but that kind of attention for that kind of reason has a way of turning around and biting you on the ass.

reply

Define "slutty".

Oh, you mean enjoying sex? Uh, yeah, that's NORMAL. Not *all* women are frigid and/or have sexual hangups. Not all women have goofy romantic fantasies, either. Some of us just like to have fun.

What a crime, huh?

I stumbled onto this movie a couple of years ago one day when I was home sick from work and I loved it. I've seen it on TV since then a couple of times. Craig Sheffer is gorgeous and Ricki Lake is so easy to fall in love with in it. I'm not big, but I still feel like Grace sometimes, especially when I'm around good-looking guys. This is such a charming easy to watch movie. Does the dvd come with any special features or deleted scenes?

reply

no it doesn't come with any special features, i guess that happens when it was just a made for tv movie. i wish it did though. I am just glad i own it :)

well then i wish you all the luck in the world since i had never seen it anywhere else.

it was an "innocent" movie, like babycakes, without swearing and random violence. Don't get me wrong, I like those movies too when I'm in the mood, but I could watch Babycakes and Mrs Winterbourne etc at any time and just feel contended. They are "feel good" movies. :)

reply

well it's without swearing because it was a tv movie lol but yea at times those kinds of movies are good. :)
but swearing doesn't really bother me really, but everyone is different.

Hey! I loved this movie when I first saw it when I was 14!! I could relate to Grace then and still to this day!! It came on the other day on Oxygen or LMN. I taped it and sometimes I will put it on before I go to sleep! I liked the fact that she got her man in the end!! I wish the dvd had more features like deleted scenes and extras!

reply

I thought this movied rocked. I thought the guy who played rob was gorgeous and he played a sweet but confused character. The only part I find hard to watch is the club scene when his girlfriend finds them together. I hate that part I usually fast forward past that part. I loved how the movie wasn't focused around her losing weight. I hate when movies focus on that. I have always been overweeght and I am sick and tired of those lame ass movies that are all about supeficial improvement instead of just loving and accepting yourself. This movie was about her being brave and just going for it and beliving in herself. Even if real life isn't quite as rose colored as the ending it is still uplifting to watch it.

reply

I saw dis movie ages ago n i remember loving it.... i never had a chance 2 c it again but as far as i remeber i loved n i even cried watching it...

Yes, I do! I hope it will be in TV soon again!
