I like it, but I don't get it.

Can someone post some information about this film? Yes, it's beautiful, and intriguing, and mysterious. But I think most of it went over my head! Maybe something was lost in translation. Or maybe I'm trying to hard.

Some movies can just be pleasing to journey through. I saw a trailer of this at the end of some rental and it completely charmed me. 15 years later I finally acquired the laserdisc. I didn't get all of it either but, let the film carry me wherever it wanted me to go.

Too esoteric? Then go here: http://www.oszk.hu/kiadvany/hsr/1999/gyekenyesi.htm . Quite a detailed study and helpful but a little dense. Search around and you'll find this movie is quite well thought of and the subject of many essays.

I hope you're around two years later, Mr Spiggot (love the name!) -- but where did you get the laserdisc? Is this available over the inter-web? Do I have to journey to Hungary to see this movie again?

I saw this in the theatres around 1991, I'd say, in the States, and remember being dazzled and confused. Mostly titillated about seeing Edison (or was it Tesla?) speaking in Hungarian at the beginning of the movie; that's what I recall most of it. Again, would love to see it again; if anyone can point me to any avenues to satisfy my longing, I would appreciate it.

I agree with all, I would love to get my hands on a copy of this movie in either vcr or dvd. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. I watched it five times that year. Has anyone found it released in DVD?

reply

It's 2011 and still no DVD. But I was able to digitize my VHS copy and make a DVD of it to hold me over until someone releases it. I hope Criterion gets a hold of the rights to release this movie on DVD.

It is on The Criterion Channel until the end of the month. You could try out a subscription. It is a treasure trove of not popularly known masterpieces.

Two twins are orphaned at an early age. Each is adopted by a different man. Dora becomes a gold-digging whore. Lily becomes an underground revolutionary. Unbeknownst to them, their paths cross, and they even spend time with the same man, who doesn't realize he's hanging out with two different women. Eventually they all meet up in a house of mirrors with a donkey.
