Good Story, Badly Acted

Seeing as there were no threads on this movie board I decided to christen it with a few comments.

I ordered the movie because I was about to make the trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland, where the European Gypsies depicted in this movie were to end up. I also bought a few other titles, Hitler The Rise Of Evil and Anne Frank.

It's true to state that the sound dubbing was disjointed at times and the acting rather sub-standard but one can overlook that when one knows a good story - particularly when it depicts real life events.

Unintentionally, the title of 'And The Violins Stopped Playing' was perhaps badly chosen for people who have viewed this film with me at home on DVD have found cause to mock in light of the fact that the violins are a major feature of the movie and the Gypsy lifestyle at that time. In other words, people have remarked that they wished the title had been a little more reflective of the musical content! But that, I maintain, is the whole point of the title in that of course eventually the violins are silenced in the most brutal way.

Lol,the bad dubbing, made it difficult for me to judge the quality of the acting. Perhaps that is just as well!

I wasn't sure whether it was dubbed or that it was just out of synch but yes, either way the mouth was still moving long after the words had stopped in most scenes LOL!

I hate that, and it was very annoying in this movie.

Indeed, at best it's just very distracting but then I am easily distracted. When visiting my Mum, she rarely makes full use of her hearing aid and has gotten into the habit of having the subtitles on when watching a movie and that too is annoying because not only is it taking up a degree of the picture but it's hard not to read it or indeed ignore it!

I didn't even notice it was dubbed....neither did my partner.

So it can't have been that bad.

It is quite evident, certainly in my copy. But I am very happy to read that it seemingly did not mar your enjoyment

I think dubbing plays a large part in spoiling a film. I found the film and its story quite engrossing and didn't think that the acting was bad or poor.
