Ray D. Tutto?

Why does Robin Williams credit himself as Ray D. Tutto? Am I supposed to get this pseudonym?

reply

I recently learned that the director of this movie was black listed by hollywood at the time, and since robin was signed with a company, he couldn't use his real name...

The IMDb trivia section says that "Re di tutto" litterally means "King of Everything" (as the man in the moon calls himself). The fact that they didn't use his real name probably was for contract reasons, so I guess they just ended up making a joke out of it (everyone knew it was Robin Williams anyway!).

is that why at the end during the list of special appearances, there is no mention of Robin Williams?

Terry Gilliam was blacklisted for what?

Ray d. Tutto means King of everything. Williams was credited this way because he and Gilliam didn't want his name to distract from the movie itself. It's not a Robin Williams movie, it's a Gilliam movie.

That's what I heard anyway.

Well, I suppose I must don a breastplate once more to play opposite Miss Tits.

When the movie was released it was stated that Robin Williams was working under contract on another movie (which I believe was "Dead Poets Society" which came out the next year). It was an exclusive contract, so in order for him to appear in "AoBM" he had to do it under a pseudonym. He's done this a couple of times: I'm pretty sure when "Dead Again" was originally released he was left out of the credits then too.

There's an excellent book on the making of Munchausen called 'Losing The Light' which is up there with 'Final Cut' (the Heaven's Gate story) for great books about disasterous productions. I don't have it in front of me and can't remember the exact details, but I believe that the situation was something like this: Eric Idle approched Williams for the role after Sean Connery pulled out. Since the production was lurching from disaster to disaster Williams, who adored Brazil and Time Bandits, was happy to help. However, then Williams' people forbade Gilliam from crediting him or using his name in any publicity (I could be wrong, but I believe that the planned release would clash with another big Williams film: Dead Poets Society, possibly?), thus robbing Gilliam of the entire point of getting such a big name cameo on board. Obviously relations between the men themselves were OK (hence The Fisher King), but I'm pretty sure it was studio/management politics.
I've got to read that book again.

Very interesting... I must read that book. I always wondered why he was credited that also.

Bump because I had been wondering after watching it in the wake of last week, and this seems to be the most likely answer.

From what I understand, the production wasn't troubled so much as Gilliam having the unfortunate luck to be making the film when new executives took over the studio. The previous head loved Gilliam's film(thus why it was greenlit and was in the process of being made) but the replacement had no such interest. In fact, iirc, the replacement made sure it was buried specifically because the film was his predecessor's pet project and there was a certain amount of animosity between the two(to put it lightly lol).

Had this situation not occurred, the film would have likely still had extra budget approved to finish it AND, of course, given a proper advertising campaign when it was actually finished. If that were the case, I wouldn't be surprised if the film had won an Oscar for something or other the year of its release.

**edit**Now....Gilliam's Don Quixote film....THAT was a disasterous production. lol

I always got the joke, but never knew any of the background to Williams' casting in the role.
