Sarah Polley was the ugliest kid ever

I hadn't seen this movie since it came out, so I watched it again as a blast from the past. I was struck at how utterly annoying and hideous Sally is. Could they have possibly found a more atrocious looking child for this movie? The more I watched it, the more I recognized Sarah Polley, from "GO". Not that she's a looker now, but holy crap she was one fugly kid!

reply

That is a little harsh. I've seen some ugly kids in my day, and Sarah isn't even close to that. She looks like Dakota Fanning in the movie.

On a similar note, does anyone find the resemblance between Sarah Polley and Uma Thurman a bit uncanny? They look like sisters.

reply

yeah, they do;

reply

Come on, Sally is the 'Newt' of Fantasy Movies.

Yes, she acted wonderfully and her appearance was perfectly wonderful too.

I think that is why she was cast in that movie "Go". The storytelling was Tarrantino like and I think they wanted a uma look-alike. Did you also notice that they had to have a guy with an english accent in there too? ala Tim Roth? And casting William Fitchner (who somewhat resembles the guy that played Zed in PULP FICTION)is kinda suspicious, too.

reply

This thread is nasty. She wasn't ugly at all, just an ordinary-looking girl who was a very good actress. Hideous? I actually thought she was a bit above average for kids in general, and she had a very good speaking voice too. As for me, I'm getting tired of preteen supermodels taking all the roles today. I like realism in my actors and actresses, and she looked very kid-next-door-ish, just like they cast her.

reply

A very good actress? Are you serious? She ruined the entire movie for me. All she did was screech the entire time.

reply

This thread is nasty.

I quite agree.

She was VERY CUTE.

And did an amazing job on the acting.

Maybe OP wanted Mouseketeers in the role.

Actually, OP is a liar. I don't know whether he even watched the movie, but he created his account expressly to tear into Sarah Polley.

What a jackass.

I agree that the opening poster's comments are nasty; he could have been more judicious in his wording or not posted at all. She does have a good resemblance to Uma. Enough said.

I went in to this knowing Uma was supposed to be in it and not sure about when it was made and .... for quite some time I thought the little girl WAS Uma! (Until later when the real Uma appears... topless and all...)

reply

So you would rather a talentless, pretty brat rather than a more plain looking child who can actually act decently?

reply

[deleted]

Seriously that's just cruel, acting talent should be more important... but alas it doesn't happen in this false, edited, plastic so called beauty world we live in...

reply

Fine, I don't think the kid could act her way out of a paper bag either. So not only was she unattractive, but she was untalented as well. I will admit that I enjoy Sarah Polley's work more since she's older, but she was terrible in this one. Really, if they're not going to focus on casting a kid that's got more talent than a wet pillow case, they could at least find one that's adorable in some way. It's Hollywood, they could troll any of those creepy bobble-head beauty pageants to find some kid that's at least cute.

I also agree that Sarah P was not as homely as Lucy from the BBC Narnia Chronicles, but that's a whole other topic.

reply

What a poor upbringing you've had.

reply

Hey hellpepper:
This is a discussion about the looks and acting ability of an actress... that's what IMDB boards are for: to discuss movies and the actors in them. Surely you agree that an actors ability to act, as well as their physical appearance, are important factors in an audiences perception of a movie.
G quick may be a bit too blunt, but he is not attacking anyone, just stating his opinion. When you make comments like "you must have had a terrible upbringing" you look like an idiot. This is not an attack on you, just a heads-up that maybe you should keep personal attacks on other IMDB members to yourself, for your own sake.
P.S.: I agree that Sarah Polley is a good actress, so please refrain from attacking me in retaliation.

reply

I do admit that personal attacks on boards like this are tacky and unnecessary and my even responding to such a pointless discussion did not show the best judgement.
But I still feel that critisizing a childs looks (even though I know she is a grown woman now)is unbelievably crass. Guess I am just old fashioned that way.

reply

I would say you actually look like the idiot for defending the troll that started this thread. Do you really think he feels strongly enough about a child actor to start a forum thread on how ugly he thinks she is? then you're an idiot.

reply

From what I have seen attacking each other seems to be exactly what these boards are for.

reply

G quick may be a bit too blunt, but he is not attacking anyone

and

When you make comments like "you must have had a terrible upbringing" you look like an idiot.

No, Mister Name-Caller, he looks absolutely sherlockian. He has seen a horrible person arrogating to himself the right to attack a child. There couldn't have been a mother at work in raising him, therefore his statement that Gquick must have had a terrible upbringing is an inductive conclusion which happens to be very appropriate to the evidence.

YOU should have done better. Why the hell would anyone log in to an IMDb account and start ripping at a child actor?

Given that Hollywood DOES NOT HIRE ugly children, he must have been lying. Since half a dozen idiots jumped in on this thread, he might only have been trolling, and trolling successfully.

So the next thing one must do to see if hellpepper's deduction is correct.

Click on the name Gquick.

You see that Gquick has posted exactly twice in his life, both posts to attack Sarah Polley.

He created his account in December 2006. He made the opening post on 24 December 2006. He posted the second attack two months later in early March 2007.

My conclusion is that he made the account expressly to belittle the girl.

WHY?!

Who the hell has nothing to say about any movie he's ever seen other than to attack a little kid? A kid who is cute, whom he calls ugly; and a kid who was actually brilliant in this very large role that called on her to show quite a bit of acting chops, but he says she was annoyingly awful.

I do not attack you for your opinion, sir. I attack you for defending an obvious troll.

reply

I smell pedophile. Too preoccupied with kids looks, even when they are just plain looking...

reply

I am not the OP but I get the impression that is what many of that mindset think. Look at all the "pretty" people that are adored for just being pretty (as if they had any control over their DNA) and utterly talentless. I prefer movies from yesteryear because performers were required to uphold a certain moral code AND have talent. Looking cute is not a skill but some people have allowed that to become a person's "claim to fame" and it's disgusting.

What..... were you planning on screwing her or something? (hheheheheehehehe)

Had she been pretty would that have changed the perception of the movie at all?

Okay granted....she was a little fugly alright!

reply

the kid is not ugly, don't all kids look alike anyways? plus, why do you focus on how attractive the kid is? (feeling a cold chill....)

Sapere Aude!

reply

Actually, I think Sarah was a wonderful actress even as a child. She starred in the amazing "Road to Avonlea" series co-produced by CTV and The Disney Channel and written and directed by Kevin Sullivan. The series ran for 91 episodes over seven years and was highly acclaimed. Sarah Polley played "Sarah Stanley" - the "Story Girl" of Lucy Maude Montgomery's books and did a really good job with the part.

Remember - beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

reply

She's not nearly as ugly as my sister - but then again, Sarah Polley has only 2 nostrils...

reply

WTF????

LMAO! That is awesome!

But that's part of the movie's brilliance...Sally was a KID. And a kid at a really awkward stage. I love how Gilliam doesn't shy away from seaminess in his movies. You see the blips, flubs and half-bakeds.

Not everything in the world is perfect. It doesn't have to be.

reply

Ok. So she didn't look like Goldilocks but this is a long time ago. Only the ubber rich ever saw a dentist. The town she lived in was under siege. Personal hygiene standards were different back then, especially for a common citizen. Hence, the plague. I think she looked exactly how I would expect a child from that time period to look. Ragamuffin? street urchin?

reply

she was an adorable child.

that is all.

reply

Her voice and performance make her cuter - British cute.

May your life be filled with misery.

reply

The OP is a troll. Why would he care about how attractive a kid looks? At least she was very talented.

Nowadays, we have a bunch of talentless pretty people who can't act worth-a dime!

reply

I think the young Sarah looks like the young girl in Chevy Chase's Christmas Vacation.

reply

very funny and totally useless thread i came on to, to imdb just as im watching this movei to find out "what does this cute little girl look like now" and sure enough hes pretty hot now. good for her, good for you, good for everybody

reply

G-Quick...Maybe you're pug-ugly for all I know! Your idea of ugly and mine are quite different. Sarah Polley as Sally was as cute as could be in ABM, and she had spunk to spare! I think she's what made that movie good then, and now she's a lovely young lady and still a good actress. The girl is NOT ugly! Go to this link to see proof! She reminds me of Deborah Kerr in her youth.

Spunk? More like brattiness. She was a TERRIBLE actress with a terrible fake British accent. I had to rate down this movie b/c she ruined it for me.
