a 6.9? wtf?

this is criminally low, wtf is wrong with you people? this has everything you need in a comedy.

7.5 at the LOWEST. It's probably more like a 7.9 or 8.0

reply

I think that is about right.

Not horrible,not great, very watchable.

I remember when it came out, that was the public reaction. No complaints,no kudos. A slightly above average movie (due to the creative script)

reply

You described a movie that belongs in the 7’s. Movies in the 6’s tend to be trash.

reply

Don't think everybody "gets it"

Listen to them. Children of the night. What music they make

6.9 is a good rating. Almost in the sevens. If it was 7.0, would you be happy?

reply

I would rate it a hard 6.

I’m surprised it’s that high given how much critics panned it at the time.

I’m glad it has a healthy cult following but I think it’s a flawed film. It’s a bit too goofy to really have any tension - Gremlins had tension and scares with comedy on top - this was a comedy first with ‘wacky’ horror on top and the recipe doesn’t quite work.

I think the film is stronger when it’s setting up the characters and the comedy is subtler. This combined with a mischievous Hitchcock tone could have been really engrossing and funny.

A stronger plot with a clear idea of what the Klopek’s were up to and why, instead of being generic horror cliches, would have worked better I think.

6.9 is about where it should be

6.9 is overrated. A very average comedy. 6.5 at most.

This movie is a 10/10. What are people's issues with it? I really don't see anything wrong with it. The plot is interesting. The characters are believable. There is a good mix of comedy and horror. I just don't get how some people wouldn't consider this movie near flawless.

What's wrong with it?

reply

The ending feels a bit tacked on. Didn't really get a sense of what the creepy family's motivation was. The writers built this great mystery with no real pay off.

reply

What sort of thing would've made a good pay off in your opinion?

reply

I'm not really sure. I mean it would have been good if Tom hanks actually found something in the basement, what that could be I don't know. And the bad guys calling the cops to their own murder house was pretty stupid, and then trying to kill Tom hanks in front of everyone. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the movie, but the ending just felt rushed, and like they just couldn't think of a cool ending. Why were they killing random people? And why would the dude with the wig ask the new weirdos on the block to pick up his mail?

reply

I love this movie to death, but davodikum asked all the right questions/issues I have with the movie too.

reply

It's gone down to 6.8/10. Doesn't surprise me. A lot of older films tend to get lower ratings.

reply

In Southeast Asia we'd call this type of thing "bad karma".

Too funny!
