Does The Simpsons have any science fiction or fantasy elements that are canon?

Family Guy is full of them. One of the main characters is a talking dog for example. But what about The Simpsons? Remember, they have to be canon, so Treehouse of Horror episodes don't count for example.

THEY ARE FOUR FINGERED,YELLOW SKINNED IMMORTALS WHO DO NOT AGE.

There's the unaired pilot, "Bartman Gets an Anal Probe".

I think Itchy and Scratchy are real characters who exist in the Simpsons universe, not just in their show

I thought Itchy & Scratchy were animated cartoon characters in the Simpsons universe. Have they ever made appearances outside of The Itch & Scratchy Show?

reply

Not really. I think their thing was meeting celebrities and stuff like that.

The dog? I'd say the baby is remarkably impressive as well, with such a huge vocabulary for a 1-3 yo!

Bart and Homer are too dumb and Lisa is an activist geek. South Park has lots of SciFi/Fantasy because the boys are smart.

reply

Definitely. though it was very limited before the final episode (#23) of season 10.
I can only think of two early examples:
- S5E15: Deep Space Homer - A chimpanzee sent into space by NASA comes back able to speak.
- S6E12: Homer the Great - When the Stonecutters are singing the "We Do" song, one of them is clearly an alien.
- S6E16: Bart vs. Australia - When the Simpsons are flying to Australia, the camera pans through the Earth's core, showing a multi-armed Hindu-like god flicking switches, seemingly keeping the planet running.
- S6E22: 'Round Springfield - After Lisa gets the local jazz station to play Bleeding Gums Murphy's (BGM) album, the images of BGM, Mufasa, Darth Vader and James Earl Jones appear to Lisa in the clouds.
All of these instances were momentary and did not affect the main story-line.

In S10E23 (Thirty Minutes over Tokyo) - At the end of the episode, as the Simpsons are flying away from Japan, the airplane gets attacked by Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and Gamera, thereby shattering any connection the Simpsons TV show had to reality. That is when I stopped watching, because the quality of writing had hit rock bottom.

I remember they were diving home at the end of an episode and Lisa turned into a moose. It was way out of left field and didn't make any sense.
