I never found a clear line of demarcation, but generally I've found that everything from years 3 through 12 are gold. There have been a few gems after that, but when I'm channel surfing and see a Simpson's episode in the middle teens and up, I don't even bother stopping.
Yea I don't watch many episodes that came out after the mid 2000s
shareFor me there was a noticeable drop in quality around season 9 although about half the episodes are good. Season 10 was just mediocre with no real stand outs apart from maybe Lisa gets an A. There may be five eras, if you continued watching after 2000, but I didn´t.

shareI would take seasons 1-2 over anything past 15, but most shows that end up great usually start out excellent and gain traction taking them to a superb level, and The Simpsons is no exception. The first two seasons are good to very good, but really took off through the middle years.
I still watch most shows from the first two seasons, but the golden age for me was 3-12. For others, they stop at season 9 or 10.
The last episode I really enjoyed was the Tomacco episode, which I think dropped in season 11. I remember thinking the show had already pretty much gone to suck by that point, but I loved that ep and a few other random ones around the same time.

shareI´d say 2 is kind of in its own place, its a lot better than one and still better than anything after season 9. 1 is really rough as far as the animation goes and Homer sounding like Walter Mathau. The humor is pretty bare bones too. I stopped watching around season 13, so I would say some of those seasons are better than one but not by much.

The show was still trying to find its footing in the earlier years and was more quirky than entertaining. After season 2 or so is when it finally began hitting its stride. It became much more polished and character-focused.

shareI agree. I actually hate the show now, which is bizarre because I was a die hard fan during the classic years. I still have an old, dog-eared copy of a Simpsons comic book from when I was in college. Groening and company have run what could've been a classic TV show into the ground.
