Why such a big gap between seasons?

I just recently started watching this and I'm wondering why there is not only such a big (three-year) gap between Seasons 1 and 2, but also so many other changes. The opening music is different, the titles are different, the whole style and even the way Boothe plays Marlowe seems different.

What the heck happened, anyone know? I enjoyed Season 1 much more :(

As far as I know, it's because the first series was an English-American co-production between David Wickes and HBO, while the second series was a Canadian-American co-production. While the first was filmed in studio in England and on location in California, the second was filmed in studio in Canada and on location in Florida.
Hence nothing fits except Powers Boothe. Personally I heartily disliked the main titles of the first serie - those in the second series had that noir-feeling - while the first series had the better action sequences and production values.
What's great about this gem of a series is that each episode is based on a Chandler short story, only written about another P.I., John Dalmas, which was before he came up with the classical Philip Marlowe.

Wow, good info. Thanks a lot. It sure was mixed-up and crazy how the discs were put together. I don't know how they are if you purchase them, but when received from Netflix the episodes were not in order at all and we had to shuffle them back and forth a few times to see them in the proper order. Still, I enjoyed the series. Thanks again.

To confuse things even more, as if it needed it...

I found a 2007 Printing from Mill Creek at a Pawn Shop recently with 'Season 1' printed on the cover art... but the episodes featured are Season 2 in the same order they are listed here on IMDB

and several years prior (circa 2000) I remember seeing a complete series Box set at a ShopKo store... unfortunately at the time I didn't have 2 pennies to rub together and have been unable to find that print anywhere since
