Fish + Chips., George? AT THE SAVOY ???

My friend and I whoop in hysterics when we watch that scene where George is all fidgety, chauffering Helena around London. She teasingly goads him into lying about his whereabouts. She knows he's going to lie, she just found out he had been deceiving her for decades.

"What was dinner like, George?"

"Oh, jolly good....fish and chips..."

Helena had to stifle herself from laughing, you could hear it in her surprise.
"Fish & chips, George. At the SAVOY?" George obviously did not come up with a sound alibi. That would be like us here in the states lying about having cheeseburgers & fries at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel !!!!

reply

I love that scene! ("oh, you know ... sole")
Also, George answering the phone: "George BATT!"

Mother Love is full of laughs, alongside the really scary and tense bits.

reply

George is a great character. When we first see George he says 'I dropped a plate' with a very child like expression.

Whilst listening to music and after the phone call from Helena pretending to be Ruth he lifts the stylus causing an almighty scratch and he says 'OH LORD'

When he shuts up the shelter he catches himself on the tree above, his expression is marvellous as he yanks his arm away

When Helena visits George in prison she is most put out when she realises that George is happy and has a sense of purpose in his life. He informs her that he will be moving to a prison farm 'with rabbits and chicken'!!!

reply

Yes, Allison, we crack up at the prison "visitation". The way Helena verbally jabs him, sugarcoating it with "concern"...."I've heard what goes on in these prisons....unspeakable cruelties..." Instead, George bursts HER bubble by bragging about the farm and how nice everyone has been to him there.

I can see the disappointment in Helena's eyes, like she's cursing to herself, "George isn't suffering ENOUGH. He needs to be stabbed or raped or beaten into a coma."

Me and my pal, we want to use her quote sitting there, all evasive to the other inmates, squirming a little...."Such BRUTISH faces, I could never get used to them."

reply

Yes ! Helena speaks of such degradations and George says "Is there? Well I suppose the toilet arrangements are a bit disgusting"!

reply

Yes there are many funny scenes. The wind-up bath toys are funny.

Also, love the scene where Kit is enjoying the pre-op drugs and feeling "randy." Also, Kit enjoying being messy. Kit is altogether charming.

The little girls are adorable at all ages. Love the scene where Laura tells Helena how Olivia did something ON PURPOSE.

reply

The wind - up toys are great, and Helena's quotes are unforgettable:

"It's Crocodile time"

"And there are two uninvited guests and they are Mr. Giraffe & Mr. Tiger"

reply

And the "safe" cookie was "Nellie the Elephant for Granny".

One of our other favorite lines which we sometimes use is when these rabid women (Angela was actually sweet and reserved!) saunter after and seduce these men here in the States. Helena is being chauffered, applying lipstick, griping, "Well, she's HOOKED him. In the USUSAL way they do it these days.
No beauty. NO poetry. She simply opened her legs in a borrowed bed the way that TART with the camera took my husband!"

reply

Brilliant dialogue between George and Helena - finishes it off with "What can't be cured must be endured" "We shall have to make room for her"

Other memorable quotes from Helena was the mimicary of Ruth:

"I've forgotten to lock up the dreaded studio, could you do it for me"

"We're in a hell of a muddle here"

"Just leave your name and number and I'll call you back alright, wait for the dreaded tone"

Helena's expressions when Danuta says:

"Oh yes - nice little knocking shop"

"The rich one who can't do it in the bed"

and then asks Helena "I'm sure you know this - Great sex, easy to find - night at a ritzy hotel not so easy" !

Helena's facial expressions while she is watching Ruth on TV are really, really funny.

Also, the way George keeps saying "Oh Lord" whenever he goofs up. Drops a plate, "Oh Lord." Spills his food, "Oh Lord." Scratches his record, "Oh Lord." He is a wonderful, memorable character.

They're all Vesey's bastards!

...fathered on the American bitch...

Excellent. So over-the-top. Love it.

Can't wait for my uncut DVD. I am also looking forward to watching George again. It must be a big disappointment for him when he gets out of prison. He so loved it in there.

Haha. I have to agree with the OP about that scene. That dialogue was so funny, and I've always remembered that part about The Savoy. Coincidentally, I was just recently at the Savoy in London (The 'American Bar') as well as The Waldorf in NYC as well. Couldn't help but thinking of Helena teasing George about eating at the Savoy!
