The way they had that court marshal decision was bad. You knew the private was going to get off, but the way they had McGillis vote guilty after leaving early to go help his young daughter was poor.

Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.

As an officer he would be inclined to apply the letter of the law regardless of the reason. It actually makes perfect sense. Especially as explained in the last few moments of the show.
