Question: 1st Gulf War

I never watched this show, except I remember when the 1st gulf war broke out...the "Major Dad" character
never deployed to Saudi Arabia (Desert Shield/Storm), and was still in America.

I remember them tying a 'yellow ribbon' on a tree to 'support the troops', however did
the show ever address why he didn't head off to Saudi Arabia?

reply

His command was not one that was deployable. Not all active duty military go to the war zone when war breaks out. Those stationed stateside in jobs that may support, will not deploy.

Someone still has to move the ships, train the troops, etc stateside.

It was not a dishonorable thing. His assignment at the time dictated he remain where he was. That is why he never went to war.

reply

That's right and those that do that serve just as honorably.

To explain why Major Dad's command did not deploy in the Persian Gulf episode titled "The Name is Over Here", kites0852 claims that "His command was not one that was deployable."
Yet earlier in the two part "All Quiet on the Home Front" episode, his command did deploy to a Central American country in preparation for possible combat action.
I thought this was strange because both involved amphibious warfare.

So are you saying they took a bit of creative license here? That he should have been deployed the second time?

I suppose if they didn't want to change the format of the show, the writers could have had him deployed during the summer months, when it was on hiatus...then picked back up the following season, with him coming home again.
