Will this EVER be available in North America?

I have heard nothing but good things about this series. I wonder if there is any move to have it translated and brought to North America.

The last time I heard about bringing it over to the US, the producers and studio wanted to know how big of a demand there was for this series. Unfortunatly they didn't get enough signatures that would be willing to pay the costs of the work to translate it so it went no where.

And as long as fans only want the newer shallow "Flavor of the Month" type of anime series. LOGH will never see a US release. Then again, it took 20 years for Bandai to give it's flagship series Gundam a try. They had small success but basically fumbeled the marketing of it. Right now I think LOGH would suffer the same fate. We need more fans for this series.

This is so depressing. All the "Chibi Kawaii buggeyed pedo-fest lolita" garbage and "Teenage screaming boy with secret powers and spikey hair" crap comes over here without a problem, yet when something really good comes a long it's such a battle to get it over here.

I have been dying to see this and was sort of hoping for a dub. What a pain. I will just watch the original. There is no use waiting for something that will NEVER happen.

So where can I find the bootlegs for this series?

reply

Download the torrent files. I have the entire series burned on dvds, it's freaking 20 gigs. The fansubs are actually pretty good, though there are obvious parts where the translation fumbles.

Yes, unfortunately, American audiences wouldn't stand for a show like this because it's a slow paced drama and doesn't have blood every ten seconds, though this series as a whole gets pretty graphic at times. I love this anime so much, it's definitely worth the time it takes to download all 110 episodes. I haven't watched the side stories yet, but I figure I'll get around to it soon.

NOTE: The reason why this series will never appear in North America is the same reason why shows like Carnivale, Deadwood, Battlestar Galactica, Rome, and Farscape were ended prematurely...people want to sacrifice character, story, and drama for cheap, uninspired thrills. It makes me sick.

It used to be rule of thumb, eventually it will. It took Lupin III a long time to get over here too but Lupin also failed to resonate with American fans. So now, it's doubtful. The average anime fan is now teenybopper age and want bubblegum-cheesecake fanservice/Matrix-style fightscenes, things you won't find in LOGH. And it's not "Japanesey" enough for the Wapanese who also make up a significant portion of the North American anime fandom. These two factors together have irreparably ruined the chances for LOGH or any more classic old-school series to be brought over here.

9 gigs into it im loving this show .

rome was canned cause it cost to much per eps to make and BSG was only ever going to be 4 seasons .

reply

God, North America really needs this show though, not only to truly get anime serious respect in this sector of the world but also to show everyone what they've been missing out on.

Also, BSG was not planned for 4 seasons initially, only after season 3 began and the writers realized they might not even get to a fourth one. When the series was picked up for the the fourth (it was nearly reduced to 10 eps!!!) the producers decided to make it the final one in order to end it on their own terms.

The world needs more science fiction like these shows! No more Star Trek, Andromeda, or any of that crap!

The company took a survey to see who would buy the whole show (price came out to 1,700$) and not enough people said they would.

reply

Too bad, really. Even though I'm watching the fansubs at the moment, I'd really like to see LoGH licensed. Once it is, I'd love to see the plethora of novels, art books and technical books translated into English. Oh well, they still haven't done that with Gundam or Macross yet. *sigh* A fanboy can dream, can't he?

Not moe moe kawaii enough

If they ever bring this series over to the US, the best thing for them to do would be to dub it and then sell it on Itunes or something, to cut down on costs.

Many a year ago during the big anime boom this was considered a few times. One of the cited problems was the length of the series and its "hard fiction" storyline that oft de-emphasized the space battles they believed. It is the same problems that plage other anime series from likely getting over here outside of fansubs for the foreseeable future. Simmilar to the hurdles that Hack Sign had to overcome. but it had some backing to get done at least.

And its not just shows like Galactic Heros, its the myriad series out there even now that companies just dont deem "marketable" for no real sane reason when we all know that the anime fandom is absolutely across the board. Beast Wars II and Neo, Microman, etc are good examples of more kid oriented series that still havent made it over to the US near a decade later. Then theres the Yamato series which has had a hellish time getting released here in its original format.

And so as allways it falls to the fansubbers to get the job done.

For those who still have an interest, all 110 episodes are available on the HIDIVE anime streaming service. Subbed. The translation quality is good.
