I was 8 in 1989, when this version came out - I watched it then, and I've watched it numerous times since. I do like it, although a couple of the actors get on my nerves, lol.

I tend to generally prefer mini-series to films, as there's less need to skimp on the details when there's more time to play with. It may not be the best looking or best acted version there is, but at least the story isn't trimmed to pieces. :\

I have just watched the BBC adaptation of this book (Ioan Gruffudd and Justine Waddell) and I hated it.

I watched this mini series when I was about 10 and I really liked it. I liked Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of Magwitch and I like Anthony Calf in anything as I think he is a great actor.

Maybe those people who watched this and hated it didn't have the brains to apppreciate excellent acting from all involved and great writing from Charles Dickens.

Watching this gave me an insight into what it was really like in Victorian England for the lower classes and the convicts.

Is there anyone out there that feels the same?!!!

He is wonderful - Joe is a great character anyway, and I think JRD is pretty perfect to play him.
If you can get a copy, and like the story, it's well worth tracking, IMO (I got mine off eBay a while back, and I think amazon probably has some in the 'used and new' area).

I do kinda wish they'd used a younger actress for Estella though, rather than using the same one all the way through. Although it gives continuity looks-wise, it is strange seeing an adult playing a child. :\
