I would rate Nadia up there, but unfortunately the way the authors bastardized her personality on the island and Africa episodes pushed her out of the top 5 for me. Her character in eps. 1-22, 31, and 35-39 is more realistic, more believable. If she stayed that way for all 39 episodes instead of devolving into a cartoonishly psychotic maniac, I would've rated her much higher.

I love her even as a maniac, I mean Asuka (Evangelion) is an true maniac and I love her too...

That's the problem I have with Nadia as a character--she IS a troubled, tormented girl, yes, but she also is sane in the first 22 episodes. She was easier for me to identify with. However, that went out the window when she became more and more cartoonish and nastier--I felt that what those filler episodes had her do wasn't true to her character at all. She's supposed to be a "not good with people" kind of character, not the overexaggerated caricature of a shrew the island/Africa eps turned her into. That was my primary reason that I found eps. 23-34 (31 excepted) so insulting. I just could not like her in those filler episodes (and those episodes were terribly done, too, in terms of animation and storyline--I've never seen any filler episodes more abysmally animated and nonsensically plotted as these). Simply put, she was far more interesting and sympathetic in eps. 1-22, 31, and 35-39, mainly because that's what Gainax wanted in the first place.

At least Asuka was more consistent as a character.

(POSSIBLE SPOILER)
About Nadia's change in character: the impression I got was that the stress of all that she'd been through was finally getting to her, and that she was starting to act more on her impulses and not thinking about others. I admit certain things she did like stealing food from Jean and Marie was pretty messed up, but again that's because she was only thinking of herself at the time. It is on the island that she seems to start to admit her love for Jean, as it is there that she kisses him for the first time. (Twice, in fact.)

So...the island episodes were filler episodes? Does that mean Nadia was a manga first? Generally "filler episodes" refer to when an anime series based on a manga series makes up new chapters that were never in the original manga, but are made specifically for the anime. Often this is done because they start making the anime while the manga is still being released, and then they catch up to the manga, and they then start producing filler episodes to buy time until the manga gets far enough ahead so that the anime can get back to the main storyline. So, was Nadia a manga?

Well, here's the thing about the "island/Africa episodes": they were never supposed to be made in the first place. Gainax originally wanted Nadia to be a streamlined 30-episode series, but because it was so successful, NHK demanded another season of episodes. Unfortunately, they didn't provide either the time or money to produce them properly, which is why the animation in these episodes are so awful (other studios in Japan and Korea animated these episodes). My biggest problem with them was how the characters are bastardized; I felt like everyone was behaving like cartoonish mockeries of their former selves, and the so-called character development felt more like character derailment. While your analysis on Nadia's change of character is a plausible theory, what works against those episodes is not only that it feels very out of character for someone like her, but it's also executed very cartoonishly. The same is true with the Africa episodes, which I felt were the absolute worst in the show. The opening 22 episodes and final five did a far better job at making her more of a real person; in these episodes, I felt that they just turned her into a caricature. Heck, even Hideaki Anno admitted he would have done away with these "island" and "Africa" episodes and saved only the episode where Nadia find out who she is from that artificial being.

No, Nadia was not originally a manga. The reason those episodes exist was because of executive meddling.
