So how did Doogie Howser end?

How did the last episode end? Does anyone know?

reply

Vinnie convinces Doogie to take an acting class, and Doogie subsequently discovers that there's more in life he wants to explore. The show concludes with the two of them on an airplane somewhere. You can just watch it on Hulu, btw.

Yeah, and on that note it's extremely unsatisfying for the audience member. He just decides to quit one day and no one except the audience takes it as a shock (his parents are encouraging, his colleagues act as if they saw it coming all along, etc.). I really wish they could have followed up with a TV special or something.

reply

I hated the ending. He gives up a promising career to be an actor?

reply

Not that I don't believe in the acting part, it's just that it was so sudden and abrupt. And no one on the show reacted that way.

reply

He wasn't going to become an actor, that was just one thing that opened his mind to all the other things that he, in his youth, should try. There's a lot of character growth someone in his situation would miss out on by not living life to its fullest. Besides, he hardly threw anything away. He already had more experience in the medical field than most doctors do at 30, so he could theoretically spend years doing something else and still be ahead of the game, what's the rush? Not to mention he'd always be something of a celebrity in the field due to prior accolades.

That said, it was a rather disappointing series finale and I while I think the concept had merit, they did a poor job of selling it to the audience.

reply

But with everyone else acting like they saw this coming? What was that all about?

reply

"Wooo! You are gorgeous. How bout a kiss?" "Um...okay!" That's the one thing I remember from the finale when it aired in '93. Thank you, Bobbin, for letting me know this is all on Hulu.

Annnnnd I'm done with all 97 episodes. What a great show. Vinnie's like one of the best characters ever, he's hilarious. I actually liked the last episode. I'm going to miss those guys. Wish I could see one more season- Doogie and Vinnie's Adventures in Rome :)

"Thank you, Bobbin, for letting me know this is all on Hulu."

You're welcome.

i totally agree, i just watched it and felt i was left hanging. I REALLY wished they had at least one more episode just to give the audience and me some more closure.

And I totally agree with your agreement. Talk about cold! I'm curious to know how much notice the crew was given before the show got cancelled. Did they get the cancellation order before or after the season 4 finale? Cause I'm pretty sure that, going by what I saw, they clearly weren't trying to wrap the show up.

I know Bochco/Kelly wanted to do a whole season with Doogie exploring life outside of medicine but simply never got the chance to play it through. You can see they were setting up for it, going by how season 4 ended.

And I really detest how the American viewing public works. This show ended because the ratings were dropping as NPH grew older.....which is *beep* Because he wasn't a 'kid' doctor anymore, everybody just stopped watching? lost interest? wtf?

I started watching this show on Hulu 2 weeks ago.......and just 30 mins ago, I completed the whole series. From episode ONE, I was hooked. Doog's parents, Wanda, Vinnie......I was instantly interested in these characters, and my interest did not wane between the pilot and the 'finale'.

Granted, Doogie's episode-related journal entries may come off as pure cheese, but at least they offered positive, philosophical viewpoints on how to learn from our mistakes.

I award you no points....and may God have mercy on your soul.

All I know is that the cancelation was very sudden... like 2 weeks before the final episode was going to air. The original idea was that over the fifth season, Doogie would become dissatisfied with different bureaucracies going on at the hospital and would take a stab at writing, and by the end of the fifth season, would decide to leave to become and author and all of the entires that he was putting into his computer were supposed to be used to lead up to his first book at the end of the series.

Of course, the show began in the late 80s... in an ear where actual intelligence was required to operate a computer and the internet didn't exist... unlike today.
