'Doogie Howser-I'm-gay'

So guess what happened this summer when I traveled to Washington, D.C. and went to a video store (can't remember what it was called but I remember its name was a three-letter abbreviation and it was like a mini Borders except without the books).
I asked the guy, "Excuse me, do you carry any Doogie Howser, M.D.?" The guy looked back, amused, and said, "Sorry? Doogie Howser-I'm-gay?" At first I thought I had misheard. Then he said it again. After a little while he realized that I didn't laugh at other peoples' sexual orientations, and he explained that Neil Patrick Harris is gay. The guy was like 25. Seriously, even a 13 year-old wouldn't make a joke like that. He just seemed like a dumb bully. Anyway, he took me to the aisle, and that was that.

Kinda dumb how people think that just because NPH is gay (which apparently seems wrong to them), then Doogie Howser is too.

Stop being a holier-than-thou. Don't act as if you have never made or laughed at a gay joke in your life. Even gay people do that, probably more so than straight people. Doogie Howser was a fictional character and he was never portrayed to be gay in any way. However, it would be hard to watch reruns of him chasing women and not think of Neil Patrick Harris really not being interested in women. That's why so many gay actors hide their orientation. There would be few leading man roles left for them.

reply

It wasn't really a gay joke. I mean the way he said it made it seem more like more than just a joke. And I'm not gay, so I'm not that easily offended by that kind of stuff. But he really should've thought it through before he said it. He didn't even know me. Hell, for all he knew I could've been gay myself. But anyway, the way he said it kind of implied "why would you want to get THAT show? After all, he IS gay." So ignorant.

reply

Neil Patrick Harris plays a womanizer on How I met Your Mother, and he's openly gay, so it doesn't restrict you from any roles if you're a good actor.

You sir an idiot.

First of all that clerk was acting very unprofessional. Whether or not we make gay jokes, doesn't mean you should just blurt out a gay joke to a stranger. There is a thing called etiquette.

And if you can't watch a gay actor playing a straight character, you should just shut yourself in and live in a hole. Many gay actors/actresses plays straight characters, and many straight actor/actresses plays gay characters.

There are a lot more gay people out there than you'll ever know. Not all gay people are flamboyant and fruity. And FYI men that dresses in women clothing, only about 20% of them are gay. Most gay men do not cross dress, it's only a media sterotype. Look at J Edgar Hoover.

reply

Nivrehs, you are probably thinking of f.y.e

reply

Sounds like the clerk has a crush on him.

Try not to take life too seriously, no one gets out alive.

reply

Doogie Howser had a girlfirend on the tv show.

What can you do? And keep in mind this was a 25-year-old working behind the counter of a video store. Not like you were speaking to the Secretary General of the UN.

Haha, that's true.

I take it you have never been around 13 year olds...

I find it really interesting and just a little hysterical that you even considered giving this store business with behavior that upset you so much.
really???

he probably finds it hard to believe that nph is gay, considering he was a teen idol in the early 90's and plays a manwhore lady's man currently.

I know I do.

Reading the paper can really be depressing. Mr. Dithers fired Dagwood again.
