They are reviving the show?

What are the details?

Thanks.

Last I heard, in September NBC pulled the plug on the reboot after a pilot episode was screened.

At the time, it was reported that the reboot might find another home, since NBC claimed that they cancelled it only because it wasn't a good fit with their lineup, not because they disliked the new production as such.

So the reboot supposedly went into "limbo", and was shopped around to other networks.

Search for "Coach reboot" on Google or elsewhere and you'll get links to a gazillion articles on the subject. But I didn't see any indications that anyone has picked up the package (yet). Sorry to bring you the bad news. 😞

Thanks.

Yes, I did read up on it a little bit.

I am quite surprised that anyone would be thinking of reviving or rebooting this show after 25 plus years.

I am also surprised that the original actors would be interested in such a project.

In any event, I say "leave well enough alone".

They have very big shoes to fill. After seeing (and loving) the original, a reboot can only disappoint.

I don't think every show needs a revival but I was looking forward to Coach. Fuller House is pretty good.

reply

What would the premise be? That Hayden is a 70-year-old football coach? And Luther is a 90-year-old football coach? I don't think a revival would work, in this case.

reply

Hayden's son Tim is now the coach and Hayden comes to help him. There was no mention of bringing Luther and Dauber back and Christine wasn't being written in either. So I don't think it was meant to be a revival. I am hoping Netflix picks it up!

reply

OK. I guess it's a reboot and not a revival.

Still, it doesn't sound that promising to me.

The old series was too good for this new series to be able to live up to.

reply

I agree. At the very least, I would have liked to have seen the pilot. It seems like the live-studio audience that was there during the filming enjoyed it. It might have been pretty good.

reply

Yeah, but ...

if they don't plan to take it to series, why would they air the pilot?

I didn't say I had any real expectation of ever seeing the pilot. I said I would have liked to have seen it. I know they're never gonna air it. That goes without saying.

Where did you hear that the studio audience liked it?

From the Huffington Post:

The only problem with the spin that NBC insiders are now trying to put on this “We-love-‘Coach’-so-much-we’re-going-to-make-a-13-episode-commitment-in-advance / this-show-will-no-longer-be-part-of-our-midseason-line-up” sudden reversal is that ... Well, that’s not what audience members who actually attended the August 21st tapings of this “Coach” revival have been saying about this show.

According to these folks, the pilot that Barry Kemp & Co. put together did get the balance of entertainment elements just right. It managed to carry just enough characters over from “Coach” ‘s ABC incarnation to appeal to longtime fans of this sitcom while — at the same time — this pilot put Craig T. Nelson’s Coach Fox character in a fresh enough setting that new viewers were sure to sample this show.

Interesting.

So, I wonder why NBC nixed the idea?

reply

I remember reading somewhere that the executives thought it was good, but that it felt too dated, and that it wouldn't take off with younger people in the long run. I remember reading somewhere the executives had their own ideas and changes ready for the script but the creator, Barry Kemp, didn't want to make any compromises. As crazy as it sounds, "dated" kind of appealed to me. I miss the old shows. Not just "Coach," but the formula back in those days with sitcoms were a lot more enjoyable to me.

reply

I agree. I also like the "dated" sitcom style.

But, I can see NBC's point that "dated" will not work with the younger demographic of today. And, therefore, it will not make money. And, therefore, it will not succeed.

I applaud Kemp for his decision.

I can only imagine what the show would look like after it was re-tooled to appeal to the younger generation.

I am sure it would be quite awful.
