Question about the Shrunken Head Guy...

I really enjoyed the Beetlejuice series as a kid and remember seeing the Shrunken Head Guy from the movie's afterlife waiting room scenes in it (he had a high-pitched, whiny voice), however I don't recall what role he served on the cartoon (he was a shopkeeper in the video game) and couldn't find anything online. Does anybody remember details such as his name (it was Harry the Haunted Hunter for the movie and action figure line) or relationship to Beetlejuice & Lydia?

reply

I thought I remembered him as a judge but I could be wrong

Thanks for replying, deadbodieseverywhere17. I was beginning to think that I was the only one who remembered seeing the Shrunken Head Guy in the series, as there doesn't seem to be any mention of him on any Beetlejuice fansites (which is weird, considering he's in all Beetlejuice media from the movie onwards: the theatrical poster, action figure line, cartoon series, and video game). So, you think you remember him as a judge? That makes sense, as I also seem to recall him holding a position of power. Do you remember any other details about him from the cartoon?

reply

NP Goomboss :) One thing I can remember is that Beetlejuice was in trouble for something and shunken head guy was presiding over the "trial". I can remember one joke too from the episode. Beetlejuice was on a horse and it grew to like 50 feet and someone said hey beetlejuice get off your high horse...kinda lame but I remember a bit about that episode. I saw some episodes on www.surfthechannel.com, I havent checked any out yet but it says they are there.

Awesome, thanks for those episode details, deadbodieseverywhere17. :) I'll be sure to use them in a Google search and hopefully find the name of that episode with Shrunken Head Guy. Heh, yeah, the cartoon was always full of those silly gags. :P Hopefully, it will eventually receive seasonal DVD box set releases. Until then, I'll check out the episodes you mentioned seeing on www.surfthechannel.com. If you happen to watch any of them and stumble upon that episode with Shrunken Head Guy you remember, be sure to let me know (I'll do the same)! :)

reply

Yeah I will...like you said if you find it let me know too I would like to see it again :)

Thank you very much, dannyfreddypiccolobart!! :) Wow, that ONE episode answered ALL of my questions about the Shrunken Head Guy (or Smallhead, as he's named) in the cartoon, and it's just as deadbodieseverywhere17 remembered (right down to his status as a judge and the high horse joke)!! I'd searched various Beetlejuice episode guides for clues to the episode deadbodieseverywhere17 described without much luck, until you pasted the YouTube link. Was that episode difficult to find? I figured it would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

It was a real treat seeing the actual waiting room from the movie (I remembered Smallhead's appearance in the cartoon, but not the waiting room), along with some of the ghosts from those scenes (heh, the only thing missing was Harry Belafonte's "Jump In the Line"). I wonder if the waiting room was featured in other episodes? Needless to say, I've favorited all three parts of "Worm Welcome" and subscribed to Night0Shadow13's channel (hopefully, the entire Beetlejuice series will eventually be released on DVD/Blu-ray). Again, many thanks for those great links! :)

No prob! And I had already found her and was watching the episodes when I saw your post on here. He shows up in a few other episodes as well, btw. Here's the best place I could find to watch episodes! This place has all the ones from Night0Shadow13's channel on youtube, and LOADS more!!! Enjoy!! ^^ (What's shocking for me, is that BJ actually sorta swears in one of the episodes...TECHNICALLY it's not a swear word, but it IS considered as such in children's cartoons, so I was surprised. ANYWAY, it's ep. 435 To Beetle Or Not To Beetle.)

Cool, do you know the names of those other episodes Smallhead shows up in? I'd love to check 'em out (he's always been one of my favorite Beetlejuice characters...I even had his action figure when I was a kid: http://cgi.ebay.ca/BEETLEJUICE-HARRY-THE-HAUNTED-HUNTER-ACTION-FIGURE-MOC_W0QQitemZ260240924208QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116#ebayphotohosting)!

Thanks for that other link! What exactly does BJ say in "To Beetle Or Not To Beetle" that comes close to swearing? Unfortunately, the episode isn't loading so I haven't been able to watch it, yet. Hey, you wouldn't happen to have a link to the "Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian" screenplay, would you?

reply

COOL! Unfortunately, I can't remember what other eps. he shows up in, nor do I have the link to "Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian"

Anyway, in To Beetle Or Not To Beetle, Puck *a character in Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare* transforms BJ's head into that of a donkey's, so he says "NO ONE MAKES A JACKASS OUTTA ME!!!" Again, many don't consider it swearing, including myself, but the MPAA, even since the late 80's has considered it as such for little kids, and so banned it from cartoons entirely. Hearing it in an early 90's cartoon just makes it HILARIOUS to me...I guess the MPAA figured it was clean because he was technically aiming the comment toward his donkey head, but even then, it's a bit of a surprise.

Yeah, those action figures were pretty cool! There were several variations of BJ, my favorite wearing the striped suit from the film's climax/cartoon series, Adam, Otho, and Smallhead (I can't remember if there were more). They had removable heads (with the exception of Adam, who had a "Beakface" mask), which revealed smaller heads that performed different "scares" (e.g. spinning, sliding down an arm, screaming, etc.). There was also Beetlejuice's grave, which would either make an inserted figure disappear or replace it with a miniature BJ. What was cool about the Smallhead figure is that it included his pre-shrunken head, which seemed to suggest he was killed by an arrow through the cranium.

Well, if you happen to spot Smallhead in any episodes you watch in the future, please be sure to let me know! :) Yeah, I've been curious about "Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian" ever since I read a bit of the plot, online. Seems the sequel would've involved the Deetz family moving to Hawaii to open a resort, but they choose to build on an ancient burial ground and disturb the spirits who rest there. Not sure how BJ would've fit into that storyline, though. Michael Keaton & Winona Ryder were both willing to do it (I hear Keaton REALLY wanted to do it and still does), but it fell apart for whatever reason (not sure if it had something to do with Burton being too busy with "Batman Returns"). Hopefully the screenplay finds its way online, soon!

I'm familiar with Puck and "A Midsummer Night's Dream". I remember Oberon appeared in an episode of "The Legend of Zelda" cartoon that aired around the same time as "Beetlejuice". Heh, that gag reminds me of one in an old Mickey Mouse short called "Ye Olden Days", in which Mickey battled Goofy for Minnie's hand in marriage (seeing Goofy as an actual villain is pretty surreal). While the two of them are duelling with lances, Mickey's donkey bites Goofy's steed in the behind and sends it crashing into a wall with a portrait of the king (Minnie's father) above it. The impact causes the painting to come crashing down onto the horse's rear-end (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbJjTiM2xdc). I never realised the MPAA considered "jackass" as swearing, though. Weird, considering they didn't censor a similar line of dialogue from "Shrek", in which Shrek says "I have to save my ass" to Fiona, in reference to Donkey.

reply

Well, they only considered it swearing for kids' shows in the late 80's ant through most of the 90's...PLUS, it was alright in PG or higher rated movies, even then. They usually would have rated the show TV-PG, but kept it TV-G because they didn't notice it...They were cautious and a little too protective even then, but they were also a little airheaded...They'd skip on things like that from time to time, but only about five times EVER on a kids' show at that point...Now, they're INSANE!!!

Apparently the script became too silly for some of the principals; there was supposed to have been a climactic sequence in which Beetlejuice defeats a cadre of malevolent spirits by out-surfing them.

This is kinda off topic although it has to do with SHG.

My friends at work say that my Driver's License picture makes me look like SHG! I remember my friend said "Did they make you stand a mile back"!?

I dont know what to say! Just don't put words in my mouth!

Actually, he's not quite a judge... He's more like a high ranking law official, because he is the "help/aid" to Judge Mental.
