Again, this all depends on what you saw first. I saw the cartoon first and loved it for it's somewhat corny puns and being a little little kid, like four, at the time, I thought the cartoon looked good enough. Then the cartoon went off the air and I missed it terribly. And CN started playing the movie every Halloween, which would cause me to come running on hearing the theme music, just to be disappointed that my favorite cartoon wasn't on. But I grew to like the movie as it was, too.
And much later, when I was 19, I rewatched the first episode. At first even I thought "this animation is kind of an eye sore now", but I decided to push myself through it to see if the series could get better in other ways to live up to my memories, and it was very worth it. But I was disappointed to find out the episodes were not on DVD. Then, only months after I had finished the series, Shout! announced an official DVD box set release and boy was I ecstatic! A lot of people argue that the youtube quality was better, but I honestly thought it looked lighter and more faded on youtube than on the DVDs.
I had also bought a copy of the movie+cartoon DVD when I was 13, around the time I officially became a Tim Burton fan. I wasn't a hardcore fan of his, however, until I turned 18 or so.
