Someone tell me the name of the cast with the mustache and somewhat bald.

cast member? Michael Newman. they would call him "Newmie" for short.

I always wondered why they let him be in the show :

- was he some sort of counterpoint to all the pretty people ?
- was it to deliver some authenticity by including someone who looked like he was a real lifeguard ?

Peculiar figure...half cast member..half not.

He was their technical consultant and a number of the show's rescues were based on his experiences.

yes,the guy who played newmie was a real lifeguard, he was a character and their tec adviser for the show
