California was so "Chill" in the '90s... .

Something about "Baywatch" and SoCal beaches make me think CA was more "chill in the 90s. Now CA is plagued with illegal immigration at record levels, dysfunctional government, bankruptcy, water rationing, and a dwindling middle class, which is pushed to lower cost states such as AZ, WA, OR, NV, TX, etc.

Granted, CA is still generally laid back compared to the rest of the country, and they are/were quakes, punks, crime, illegals and high cost of living (which is all relative to today). But I'm sure in other ways CA seemed more "livable" back then.

I know, easy to see things through rose colored glasses, and think problems were minimal compared to today. Still, watching this show Is a good excuse to miss the '90s.

Agreed

Illegal immigration rocketed starting in 1985.

So did your face.

I don't think a show like Baywatch today could be as big or popular as it was back in the 90s.

It feels like the world has become too politically correct, whereas back then it was more "chill".

I think they still had all of the problems you mentioned back in the 90s, but to a lesser extent and people were more optimistic about the future.

I don't think so, either; at least it would be extremely different. Hobie would not be home alone for a couple hours or riding around town by himself before he became a teenager, that's certain.

As for another poster, I wasn't implying immigration started yesterday; but certainly Californians could still afford to buy a home, live ok then. With more stress in finances, less security AND continuing immigration, there does seem to be more frustrations/resentment/less tolerance in that regard.

see and this is what is wrong with america. everyone is too uptight nowadays about women's rights. it was so much better when you could watch a show with babes degrading themselves as sex objects on tv shows in the '90s.

reply

How old are you? California was terrible in the 79's, 80's, and 90's. It is better now than it was then. Far less crime, povert, and government corruption.

reply

Poverty is at a high in Cali...

In Trump We Trust

reply

So is great wealth.

reply

Not really. California is comparable to New Hampshire or Wyoming on per capita income. And neither of those states come close to CA's poverty level.

It's true that violent crime has dropped off. There was an awful spike of gang violence in the 90s that has passed.

reply

California is an absolute S Hole. how delusional can you be?

reply

You're out of your mind, shifty. I've been in California for decades and it's by far the worst I have ever seen.

reply

You clearly didn't experience the real California of early 90s.

Murder rate, violent crime, unemployment all at an all-time high.

The Mexicans were also less assimilated back then.
Now you won't find it difficult to find Mexicans with excellent English.

Nothing says chill like the infamous LA riots.
