True Story

Hi

I was told some years ago, that this was based on a true story.
I know for sure that it has certain echoe of the Schapelle Corby case, and the Bali 9 (6 of whom now face the firing squad).
It seems that though this is an everyman moral story, it has as much relevance today as it ever, young Australians (or westerners if you like) getting into trouble in foreign countries they don't understand.
Back to the point though, was it based on a true story?

quiet here - anyone???

I think it probaly took a few facts from a few true stories. I don't remember seeing anything on the film that said it was, which they usually do if it is.

This has just been on W on Foxtel. Great story but I am fairly confident it is not based on Schapelle Corby's case, nor the Bali 9's...

Nicole Kidman's acting hasn't progressed much since the very late 80s

reply

Its impossible for BH to be based on the Corby or Bali 9 cases - because they didnt exist when the movie originally came out 18 years ago... What happened in this movie was fictional, but obviously possible.

No my comment was about how up to date the parrallles our with the Corby and Bali 9 cases.
It was thought it may have been based on a true story at one time though.

there is a book called Forget You Had a Daughter: Doing time in the Bangkok Hilton. It's about a woman named Sandra Gregory, who I found out is a 2nd cousin (or something) to me. But the book is great. I haven't seen this series but after reading a little about it, it seems pretty close. Not quite how she ends up there. Read the book, weel worth your time!

Behold the pale horse. The man who sat on him was death, and Hell followed with him.

It is similar, but Gregory was at least 5 years after BKH was made

No it's fiction. While its a great mini-series and totally gripping, it is not factually accurate in terms of either Thai prisons, or the Thai legal system.

I concur with whoever reccommended "Forget You Had A Daughter", that was an excellent book. But not for the faint hearted!

This movie has very little in common with the Bali 9 or Shapelle Corby excpet that they are in gaols in Asia(not even Thailand).
The whole point of Bangkok Hilton is that she is in fact innocent, again completely different to Schapelle Corby and the Bali 9.

In the case of Corby though she too claimed to know nothing of the drugs, just like Nicole's character (Kat), so in that respect (accepting it's Thailand and not Bali) it's remarkbly similar.

I knew it wasn't based on Schappele or Bali 9 but the similarities were there, it was I'd been led to believe it was based on a story set sometime earlier, though I guess not.

Well, back in 1986 there were 2 young Australian men, Barlow and Chambers, who tried to smuggle heroin out of Malaysia. Each one tried to blame the other until finally they were both executed by hanging.

And of course there's the classic 1978 movie called "Midnight Express" about drug smuggler Billy Hayes who is jailed in a Turkish prison. He finally escapes......... However it set Turkish tourism back 20 my years. That story is based on fact.
