Many years back, I read that despite decent ratings, someone at ABC decided to just cancel the entire MYSTERY MOVIE series. But, after-the-fact, they changed their minds... which is why COLUMBO kept going... and going... and going... (Which was a good thing, as beginning with the 2nd season on ABC, Peter Falk took over as co-exec. producer, and the quality-- and variety-- of the scripts improved noticably.)

In the case of B.L. STRYKER, by the time they got in touch with Burt Reynolds about doing a 3rd season, he had already started work on EVENING SHADE.
