This and movies like "Wall Street" and "Ferris Beuller's Day Off" celebrated greed, lying, backstabbing, and in the case of this movie, fucking your way up. The zeitgeist was all about ruthlessness and fucking over anyone who got in your way, or who just wasn't of any use to you.
It was a bad time to be poor, or a person who believes in decency, just like today.
Wasn't Gordon Gecko the bad guy in Wall Street?
He ends up going to jail for his crimes. Granted, it's a fantasy that a white collar Wall Street scoundrel like him would end up like that, but its a movie.
And that's why I hated the 80s, DURING the 80s!
