Wearing Tennis Shoes to work...

Then changing to heels at the office. I remember as a kid seeing women doing this in Washington DC. Do women still do this in big commuter cities like NY and DC? I would have to do this as I turn my ankles very easily and have a hard time wearing any shoes besides tennis shoes. Flat heeled boots aren't so bad, but for long distance walking I would need my tennis shoes.

They still do it..especially in cities where the winter sludge and slush would ruin a good pair of shoes on day 1.

Interesting. I always wanted to live someplace where I didn't have to drive to work. I think commuting would much more fun if it involved a boat, a train, and brisk walk.

I worked in Manhattan during the 70's and 80's (commuted from the 'burbs') and the sneaker trend really took off during one of the big transit strikes, early to mid-eighties, I think. You really didn't see it that much before then. But during that time, people had to be very creative about getting to work! And there was a LOT of walking. Then it just kind of stuck.

Did all the commuters wear sneakers?

It seemed like Tess stopped wearing them when she was pretending to be an executive.

Then again, I didn't really see her commuting while she was doing this.

P.S. Tess wasn't really commuting that much when she lived in Katharine's house, so I guess sneakers wouldn't be needed anyway.

It's done here in Seattle still. Thanks Sex And The City

I don't know about tennis shoes, but I personally wear flats all the time then change into heels when I get to office from car walking downtown.
