I have not seen this film so I don't know if they are first cousins, second, third? But if they are first or second, you are the crazy/naive one if you think that's okay.

"In most countries, marriage between cousins is legal..."

"In ancient China, first cousins with the same surnames (i.e. those born to the father's brothers) were not permitted to marry, while those with different surnames (i.e. maternal cousins and paternal cousins born to the father's sisters) were."

Note also that "ancient China" is not the same as 80's Hong Kong.

These yanks are so narrow-minded. The level of acceptance of relationships between cousins varies from country to country. In some countries such kind of unions are even preferable by traditional families.
However in most countries sex between cousins is NOT considered incest. I am not sure if cousin couples are considered incestuous couples even in all the states of USA.

Have you ever seen a movie called "The Godfather Part III"? Do you realize that the characters of Andy GarcĂa and Sofia Coppola were cousins, don't you? among southern italians, in particular sicilians, it was kinda normal to marry your cousin, at least until the decades of 1950-70.

So don't take for granted that what is a rule in your culture/country is the rule in different countries as well.

I think they were second cousins to be honest.

reply

No, they were not second cousins. His auntie says that "your uncle's daughter."

Another thing to take into account is that they didn't even know each other. Technically, that doesn't make any difference, they're still cousins, but it does make a difference in the sense that they didn't grow up together very closely like some cousins do, which means you grow up with the feeling and knowledge they're related to you.

For example, I've always been close with my cousin, but we've grown up together knowing that our moms are sisters, so would there be something going on that would almost be like having a crush on your sister. To me that is, because some of you made some very valid points that in a lot of cultures, also "western" cultures it's completely legal to marry your cousins, although I would find it a bit awkwards and in my own situation I'd feel it'd be simply wrong, but in the situation of As Tears Go By, I feel that there's nothing wrong with it both instinctively and rationally. They don't know each other and basically meet in a guy meets girl way, and there is a natural attraction between them that isn't contradicted by memories from childhood or growing up together.

To be fair we can't know for sure. whether he's a sibling from his mother or his father side, he would still be addressed as 'uncle' anyway.

Natural to blame americans for everything but science will tell us that breeding within the family leads to mental and physical disorders in the offspring.

Excellent post!

In Chinese culture, it's normal.

The million dollar question to your question - HHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAA?????!!!!

C'mon guys, it's a bit weird.

Although it is an awkward plot point, as others have pointed out, it is not uncommon in some cultures to find it acceptable. Some, if not much, of the Arabic tribes find it permissible, or even preferable, to marry a relation . It was also the case with the historical European aristocracy, which tended to intermarry, which lead to an increase in sickle cell disease.

I think that this may have been a literal cousin, but it is important to note that sometimes, relations may be used in other contexts. For example, "godfather" and "brother" are used within the context of the gang, but may not reflect a blood, familial relationship.
