i don't understand...

I'm currently watching this film on channel four now. I've seen it many times as a child and forgot just how great it is!

I don't fully understand however, how do slycarp and mr. grimshaw know each other?

This isn't fully explained

Any ideas?

I read the book as a child but don't remember how they knew each other. Great film though!

They don't really explain it in the film but in the book, Grimshaw is a expert at forgery. He worked for Sir Willoughby's lawyer and found out where everyone lived and how much money there was. He and Slycarp plan everything way in advance. He forges her credentials as a governess so she can contact Sir Willoughby and become the children's guardian when the parents set sail for their trip. Mrs. Briskett is also involved from the beginning, helping to inquire about the ship the parents will board. They pay off the sea captain, making sure that the ship will sink. They of course do all of this to inherit the Willoughby's fortune. The suggested love interest between the two in the film is not in the book.
