Could That Work?

Could be anybody picture Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley playing Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in a serious film rather than a comic satire?

They are good and flexible actors, why not?
Reminds me of how Leslie Nielsen played very straight characters and when he got cast as Frank Drebbin for Police Squad and The Naked Gun movies, he was brilliant, partly because he was used to playing the same role in serious films, but in slapstick comedies, his character became a hilarious counterpoint to the sheer ridiculousness in the films.

thats why this movie is so good
when you first see the 2 main characters you think "great casting" then you find that the story is of Watson being the clever one and Holmes a silly fool.

they play off each other so well.

Comedy - really smart, nuanced comedy - is a lot harder to pull off well than drama. All of the really great "dramatic" actors, when they do comedy, usually nail it. Caine is the perfect example, although there are other examples.

Patrick Stewart is another excellent example - he approaches comedy with the same care and seriousness as his dramatic roles. The DVD commentary for his guest shot on The Simpsons mentions that he put more effort and professionalism into his performance than any other guest star they've had, and that's why the episode is so funny and well remembered.

Conversely, Bill Murray can do drama because in his comic performances, there's always a genuineness of character in his portrayals.

i think so too. WAC is no vulgar comedy, it has
a credible plot that wouldn't be too improbable in real life.
Messers Caine & Kingsley are fine character actors who
could pull it off in thriller drama as well.

reply

I've often thought the two of them in a dramatic interpretation of the story would have been marvelous.

Michael Cane is now too old to play sherlock. I also think that he is not severe enough to perfectly play the role of the rigid perfectionist Homes.

Ben Kingsly could be set to play Watson, as he is a fantastic actor, and will be about the right age. If he is given enough makeup, and bulks up enough, he could play the stout ex-soldier quite well.

reply

In a serious movie Kingsly might make a better Holmes.
